Our lovely governor finally had a press conference today and when asked if she would recommend masks for school children since cases are skyrocketing she replied that "it doesn't really matter" because the mask mandate ban is a law. And now she posted on her Facebook page an opinion piece article about the dangers of children wearing masks. This woman is a menace. My favorite local Qamom is all up in the comments about just wait and see, if they mandate masks then they will mandate vaccines! Soon they will be invading our schools and force vaccinating our kids without our knowledge or permission! And her BFF is running for school board which is horrifying. That garbage piece by Vinay Prasad? I can't believe the Atlantic published that shit. He blocked me on Twitter. I literally asked him two normal questions Getting blocked by him is a thing. I didn't actually harass him. Yes, that's the one. I just can't.

I wonder how many claimed religious exemptions though and the kids haven’t been vaccinated to go to school.

I’m worried about people traveling for Labor Day here and bringing the covid back to school. But I can only control myself so…here I am in the world’s worst group project. Fuuuuuuu I hadn't even thought of this. Crap.

Fuuuuuuu I hadn't even thought of this. Crap. We didn’t send DS back until 2 weeks after spring break to avoid this but it’s unsustainable to do that for each holiday from here on out. We’ll increase our testing just in case.

Our school finally shared some data on covid. They did asymptomatic testing on 1,100 kids last week (it’s voluntary, so that’s all they got) and had 3 positives. 2 they told before they got to school and 1 went to school but so far no spread had been identified.
They did 6 rapid tests on kids showing symptoms at school and all were negative.
I’m breathing a little sigh of relief.
Oh and 96.5% of all staff is vaxed. Phew.

I already said no to this invitation twice, but shouldn't my MIL not have a just for fun get together in 2 weeks?
She cares for her 80+ year old parents daily. All grandkids are now back in person school for the first time. She claims immediate family only, but that is 15 people at least/5 households/2 different cities.
All of age are vaccinated, but that is all irrelevant with Delta and having a young child.
She told me in July, I said no because I just wanted to make sure things stayed safe for school. This is around the time when delta was shown to be a serious concern. She said her mom told her about what the news said.
Then she she sent a group text two weeks ago with the invitation. My husband says he told her we weren't going to things like this right now.
Then today I get a fancy invite in the mail.
When we went for the last visit early Summer, one grandma made a comment that my son needs to see his cousins because they miss him.
I don't know how to better illustrate the risk of my son being in school and my husband having a variety of job sites including out of town this week in a low vaccination county.
We used to see family once a month pre Covid, but today that is just not wise. We are close as we both call family daily and always keep in touch.
Just grumbly about family and get togethers as always.

I just wanted to share a friend's success story because I found it encouraging. She had covid back in March of 2020, was in the ICU intubated for 2 weeks and then bedridden and used o2 for most of the summer. She had a more severe case for 35yo because she has lupus. Fast forward, she has had 3 vaccines (2 Pfizer, 1 Moderna), her kids tested positive the first week of school. Now 2 weeks later the household has fully recovered and while her symptoms were worse than her husband's, she never had to go to the hospital.

Much Qamom drama with the school board elections around here. I've stumbled upon a few of their Facebook pages and wow. It would be hilarious if it weren't so terrifying.
One posted that the CDC is planning a "polio-like outbreak" for Sept/Oct that they will achieve through flu shots. But don't worry, it's not contagious so you'll only get it if you get the flu shot. WTF.

DD1 came out of her room around 11:30 last night complaining of a sore throat. Guess who barely slept last night? 🙋
This morning, she was complaining of her stomach hurting but throat was fine. She said the pain would come and go. She ate some toast and perked up. H suggested gas meanwhile I'm googling appendicitis. Parenthood is so much fun.

She said the pain would come and go. She ate some toast and perked up. H suggested gas meanwhile I'm googling appendicitis. Parenthood is so much fun. Signs of strep include: sore throat, abdominal pain/vomiting, headache, fever and rash. Some people have multiple symptoms, some people have 1. Signs of appendicitis: R sided abdominal pain (usually R lower abdomen, but not always), fever, vomiting. It used to be kids would have all 3 symptoms or at least 2/3, but lately most kids just have pain, no other symptoms. But, the pain is consistent, can wake them from sleep, hurts more if they jump. L sided pain is usually constipation. Pain that is intermittent, but severe (like makes you double over), should be checked no matter where it is. I hope that helps.

Our school board mandated the vaccine for staff...sort of. Either they need to get the vaccine or get tested weekly.

We just had our mid-level boss in our weekly zoom meeting and he was there to explain our "return to work" policy that is effective next week. It was sort of a way for anyone to air grievances and ask questions that he could either explain or bring our comments to the county attorney.
Apparently my anxiety and stress and everything else from the last year and a half came to a head and when I spoke about being concerned about my kids, I just broke down crying in front of my entire office. So. That was fun. Being a parent of tiny children is so great right now, is it not?

A lot of kids were sent home for headaches at DS’s school over the past two weeks. Which, it was 95 degrees and pollen season is in full force, so kids will have headaches this time of year. Basically, if a kid is feeling unwell enough to complain a lot or ask to be sent to the nurse, they are being sent home and need to get tested to return. I assume the school is just trying to be extra careful to avoid outbreaks since Delta is such a sneaky bastard. Oh wow I haven't seen any of this

Hugs, willow . I hope it made those without children sit back and think. There was only one other person in the meeting with a child under 16 but basically everyone except one person in the meeting DOES have kids, they are just either teenagers or adults (I'm the youngest person in my division aside from our law clerks). So I actually got a handful of people getting tear eyed in sympathy which I appreciate. My colleagues aren't the problem, it's our "big boss" making the policy. I'm actually the union rep from our division that will be meeting with her next week to try and change her mind.

willow I hope they heard you and make changes to the policy. That is great that you spoke up. There really has to be great accomodations made for those with school aged children in case of quarantine or other matters. It is just no where near time to return to normal.

Our school board mandated the vaccine for staff...sort of. Either they need to get the vaccine or get tested weekly. This is the rule in CA. I think it’s stupid. Weekly testing barely tells you anything and isn’t burdensome to get them to vax.
