There’s always people that stay, for a variety of reasons. My brother is in Baton Rouge and he’s staying. My family on the coast have evacuated. I’m also worried about areas in Tennessee that had recent flooding and will likely be affected by ida.

When Houston tried that for Rita it did not go well. I have such PTSD from all these weather events. Watching Ida hit is just giving me horrible flashbacks and I feel so bad for everyone in her path. There is going to be so much devastation. Louisiana and the Cajun Navy helped Houston so much after Harvey. We need to be there for them now.

President Biden addressing the nation regarding Hurrican Ida - I just came back to the Weather Channel and looks like he's speaking from FEMA. What a day that defines the responsibilities and weight the Commander in Chief carries.

Also lots saying the storm got so bad so quickly that it was too late to evacuate once they thought they should.

I have what's probably a really dumb question and maybe hawkward or someone else can answer it . We know that hurricanes can get bad really quickly and that evacuation becomes a nightmare bc there is limited road space, gasoline, and hotels within a reasonable drive of the storm zone. I keep thinking back to the photos of military planes evacuating people from HKIA. I know about posse comitatus but is there a reason we don't use government or military aircraft to evacuate people more efficiently out if storm paths? I know it would be incredibly expensive but I keep hearing of people who don't evacuate at all or get stranded in their cars in a hurricane bc the logistics of evacuation are unattainable or insurmountable.

dc2london I actually asked a helicopter pilot friend that, and he said they are very very rarely asked to help, and they have to be explicitly asked. He said it’s less of a budgetary issue because pilots constantly need flight hours anyway. A lot of the expenses related to the flight itself could be rolled into training flight hour costs. The reason they are used more for cleaning up afterward is because of the red tape, etc. timing. And no politician is willing to touch all that in legislation because the areas often affected by natural disasters of this scale tend to correspond heavily with STATES’ RIGHTS shouters. I’m not sure how very correct that is “officially” or just his opinion though.

dc2london You’re welcome! I can also tell you the pilots and flight nurses I know say it’s extremely hard to watch disasters like this and know they can help but aren’t allowed. It’s why you see so many veterans rushing in to help.

There is little I hate more than watching reporters out in extreme weather. It’s so silly. Why do we make them do it? You can tell me about a storm from the comfort of the studio.

But as a Midwesterner, I appreciate the storm chasers that are there anyway. But they usually share pics from their armored vehicles. Because safety.

And a few that won’t leave no matter what.

If they’re not afraid to die, why do they need guns to protect themselves?

This is terrible. I really hope the supply chain doesn't experience any disruptions.
