Afghan leaders gave up and fled. Military collapse, some without even trying to fight.
the developments of the last month reinforce that ending our military involvement now was the right decision. US should not fight and die in a war in which Afghan military was unwilling to fight themselves.

But I still don't understand why they didn't start getting Afghanis out of there in May, June and July And also quite frankly many of the Afghanis wed need to get out already had been vetted to you, work with the US govt. Maybe we can expedite the family members so that we just keep this train moving. Then we go back to the decimated state department and refugee program. My cousin is an embassy guard and has been waiting 8 months for his visa so he can get to his next post. There is so much they should have done. We should have waived a lot of the requirements to just get those people to safety.

We paid their salaries, gave them training, set up 300,000 strong army, provided air support.
We gave them the chance to determine their own future. Could not give them the will to fight for that future.

He's talking about inheriting Trump's deal with Taliban He says he had a choice to honor that agreement or risk war. No ceasefire agreement for after May 1. There was only the cold reality to follow thru or escalate and send thousands back to combat in Afghanistan, begin a third decade. He does not regret the decision to follow thru. "There was never a good time to withdrawal" There wasn't a good time. But it was still shoddily done. He needs to acknowledge that.

No chance that 1 more year, 5 more years, or 20 more years would have made a difference.

Already reports of girls being kidnapped and forced into marriages (aka slavery)

Did I hear Sen. Ernst correctly that's she on board with getting the visa train moving in a bipartisan fashion. I can see why she was interviewed - her Committee responsibilities and her military background.

Ending our occupation is entirely right, but the way it was done was clearly an unplanned hot mess. Fuck this kind of rhetoric. Obvi this isn't to you Starbuck just the dipstick in chief.

He told Afghan leaders to step the fuck up and told them they needed to stand on their own and conduct diplomacy. His advice was refused.

I understand his reasoning that we can't ask Americans to stand up and fight and die for a country whose own people won't, but we have to own the consequences of our failures there

We paid their salaries, gave them training, set up 300,000 strong army, provided air support. We gave them the chance to determine their own future. Could not give them the will to fight for that future. And two decades worth of military leaders covered and played down the fact that those forces weren't prepared. Because they weren't worried about preparing them truly they just wanted to pass the buck when they retired.
