The President is signing a huge antitrust/consumer protection EO today and I. Am. Excited. 'Today President Biden is taking decisive action to reduce the trend of corporate consolidation, increase competition, and deliver concrete benefits to America’s consumers, workers, farmers, and small businesses. Today’s historic Executive Order established a whole-of-government effort to promote competition in the American economy. The Order includes 72 initiatives by more than a dozen federal agencies to promptly tackle some of the most pressing competition problems across our economy. Once implemented, these initiatives will result in concrete improvements to people’s lives.' Lower prescription drug prices by supporting state and tribal programs that will import safe and cheaper drugs from Canada.
Save Americans with hearing loss thousands of dollars by allowing hearing aids to be sold over the counter at drug stores.
Save Americans money on their internet bills by banning excessive early termination fees, requiring clear disclosure of plan costs to facilitate comparison shopping, and ending landlord exclusivity arrangements that stick tenants with only a single internet option.
Make it easier for people to get refunds from airlines and to comparison shop for flights by requiring clear upfront disclosure of add-on fees.
Make it easier and cheaper to repair items you own by limiting manufacturers from barring self-repairs or third-party repairs of their products.
Make it easier and cheaper to switch banks by requiring banks to allow customers to take their financial transaction data with them to a competitor.
Empower family farmers and increase their incomes by strengthening the Department of Agriculture’s tools to stop the abusive practices of some meat processors.
Increase opportunities for small businesses by directing all federal agencies to promote greater competition through their procurement and spending decisions.
www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/07/09/fact-sheet-executive-order-on-promoting-competition-in-the-american-economy/The hearing aid one is huge. Why no one thought people needed to hear until now is beyond me. If you can get glasses easily why not hearing aids. They may not be perfect but they can help. My mom's hearing aids were so insanely cost prohibitive for her that we ended up paying for them. It's insane. Like absolutely nuts how much they cost. My dad's aids were ridiculously expensive. His work helped pay for them but it still cost my parents a ton

I think the OTC hearing aids is a greatly needed step in the right direction but....I wish exams and fittings by audiologists were included as well. I keep reading comparisons of OTC hearing aids to reading glasses you can pick up at CVS, but I think the 'wrong' hearing aids, used incorrectly, can have a much more adverse effect on hearing that picking up the wrong pair of readers.
Hopefully I'm wrong on this.

It's infuriating that the US allows it to happen. The EU shouldn't be turning their head either and ignoring the loophole.

Well, although I think this may actually speak well of the FDA in the long run, this doesn't seem great for the news cycle. Janet Woodcock, acting commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, on Friday asked for the inspector general to conduct an “independent review and assessment” of the agency’s interactions with the maker of a controversial new Alzheimer’s drug, whose approval has set off a torrent of criticism. link

I think the technicians that sell them are just anyone who goes through the training. She was at an ENT for an unrelated issue and he realized hers weren't right for her. She got new ones and is a brand new woman. She couldn't hear for two years and we all just thought it was her new normal.

In all seriousness, I'm glad for the small spot of joy. The whole situation is so upsetting.

This popped up on my feed today and it was the first I had heard of pipeline 3. Did a bit more digging and this is awful. Unaware beyond NE pipeline issues. This quoted tweet This whole profile, twitter.com/honortheearth?s=21

I’ll admit I didn’t know this history of Haiti. I’m glad there are journalists that can speak to this in some spaces now. And this highlights the importance of accurate education. A thread.

My dad desperately needs them but he can’t afford them. He got a pair in Colombia that were $$$$ but turns out they are shit and don’t fit his ear correctly. (It’s been a whole mess.) Now he’s been looking at getting new ones here in the states and he just can’t afford it. I can only afford to give him so much and I feel terrible about it. Maybe now he will be able to afford a pair that works and fits him correctly.

richard thank you for that. It was very easy to understand and I appreciated the direct comparisons in a point by point format.
