Nikole Hannah Jones declines UNC tenured position and will take chair position of race and journalism at Howard. ETA: Howard received ~$20 million in donations to create the new program on race and journalism and to offer positions to Nikole Hannah-Jones and Ta-Nehisi Coates. It’s a huge academic coup! And very exciting for both Howard and the DC area. I hope UNC learns a lot of lessons from all of this.

Why take tenure somewhere where the board has proven itself racist, when she can go to Howard? None of us blame her. UNC's board really showed themselves to be a bag of assholes though, and this won't be forgotten. BIPOC should not have to beg for a seat at the UNC table, particularly in regard to critical race theory. (Which, I mean hi, this totally proves the damn point of what NHJ teaches).

I'm still bitter that my HOA refused our request for solar panels because we live on a corner lot and they're only allowed if you can't see them from the street. Doing my small part to save the planet from burning > an eyesore, you asshats. It would be more expensive, but can you get the shingle panels? There's a couple side by side houses in our neighborhood that have them, so they must have gone in together to cut the cost. Unless you look for it, you'd never even notice their roof shingles were actually all small solar panels.

Andy Kim’s blue suit that he wore on Jan 6th is going into the Smithsonian’s collections for a future exhibit on the insurrection.

I'd still have to bring it to the board (the HOA VP lives across the street 🙄), but it might be a decent compromise.

Our HOA are assholes about solar too but we have a new rabble rouser in the neighborhood and I'm teaming up with him on a few things. I desperately want out of this house but at least I can help the HOA suck less

We drove through active fire areas and ugh I’m so worried for the rest of this year in fire areas. As we were driving back from WI, we were behind a whole caravan of NJ Forest Fire trucks going west. Yikes.

I aspire to that level of petty. She ended up painting her door black too, to make sure it really stands out I would run for HOA council, but there's 500 homes in my subdivision plus townhouses, and I do not have time for that kind of shenanigans.

Serving on the HOA board sounds like asking to have your house egged on a monthly basis

It's an often thankless task for the volunteers who run for HOA board spots, and win. Micro politics at its sometimes worst. That said, a person can learn a lot about the why and how things are done. Sometimes policies that seem illogical just need one voice to begin to change them; sometimes it turns out the policies are not as illogical as they seem.
There never does seem to be a plethora of volunteers to run, and complaints about boards never turning over - but always a lot of criticism and single issue voters.
I feel sorry for school board members - talk about a no win position in most cases.

Yeah, we had them quoted and it was 3x as much for less efficiency. I do understand they last longer but it is hard to justify.

Wtf
Eta: it's likely a third party seller using their platform - as I understand it that type of hosting is automated so it's not a company decision but it needs to end. Immediately.

Unsurprising but absolutely infuriating. I need the Dems to act accordingly and stop trying to negotiate with terrorists. And yeah, I called the GOP terrorists.

Omg. I knew my rep was a MTG wannabe, but this takes the cake. And why am I on your text list...? Deciding how I want to reply knowing no one probably reads these not messages.

I have no concept of how much any of it costs. We'd love solar but we just don't want to front the cost. Hashtagcheap. We have a decent size, somewhat complicated roof and I got a quick, not official estimate of 42k for solar shingles. By contrast, our solar panels are 18k, and rolling the tax credit in brings us down to 12k. We are financing, so it is just replacing our monthly electric bill and putting us out ahead some months. I don't love the thought of financing them, but it's what we could make work. This sounds like a sales pitch...I don't mean it to be!

We don't think we'll be staying in our current home long enough to justify buying panels. It definitely stinks because the back side of our roof gets full sun dawn until dusk.
