I think, even though Jane Eyre dragged for me, I am going with Mrs. Rochester's Ghost. It's a modern retelling and hopefully not as dry. It got good ratings.

A lot of the July First reads looked promising - what did everyone pick?

I have so many months of Amazon First reads on my Kindle, lol. I am kind of saving Kindle reads for when I need a lighter thing to hold or MOTN reading (if I even have the capacity for reading in the MOTN, we will see).

I finished The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires - I am perplexed by it and have no idea how to rate it on Goodreads. Like, I liked it...I think; but the gore/horror parts were SO descriptive and I felt it could have been pulled back a little. But I wanted to know what was going to happen - so it served it's purpose. I downloaded Horrorstor by the same author - but IDK if I am ready to listen to it. I had the same glitch happen with my library app with Evelyn Hugo that I had a month or two ago. I got the email saying it was my turn to download it, clicked the link to go to the app, and find that it is still listed as "on hold". The first time, it was because I needed to renew my account, I think. But this time it is just still listed as unavailable. I think I might just buy it. So that was one of my favourite books of last year, but I am a big horror fan so I love Hendrix' books and actually found it pretty light on horror. Horrorstor isn't as gory if I remember correctly, but My Best Friend's Exorcism is (but that one is my favourite of his works).

I finished That Summer and The Things We Cannot Say. That Summer wasn’t quite the lighthearted beach read I thought it would be but it was good. It was on my to read list for the free cookies/author chat but I never got the cookies and skipped the author chat. It was worth reading nonetheless.
The Things We Cannot Say was superb. As WWII love stories go it was heartbreaking but redeeming of faith in people. Sometimes we just need to trust that things will work out. I’m terrible with words so I’ll just say this is a must read.

I finished Soulmate Equation. It was cute enough, not my favorite though.
I'm starting Tiny Pretty Things. I recommended Tiny Beautiful Things to my friend, but she accidentally picked Pretty up instead. She repeatedly told me that I made a great recommendation, so I figured I should also read it 😋

Did anyone here read Guncle by Steven Rowley? I finished it last week. It was pretty good. The main character Patrick drove me crazy sometimes, but I liked it in the end.
I finished The Perfect Daughter by D.J. Palmer yesterday. That was just ok. I thought multiple personalities - that should be interesting….. but I just didn’t care about any of the characters.
Last night I started Project Hail Mary. I’m about 20% in. So far I really like it… sometimes I start to feel overwhelmed by the science, but they do a pretty good job explaining things. I like the main character’s sense of humor. Naturally, I’m picturing him as Matt Damon from The Martian 💁🏻♀️ …. I don’t really have the best imagination when I’m reading books lol

I finished The Stitchers last night, which is a middle grade horror and it was a fun read. I really liked the main character and thought the plot moved along at a good pace.
I'm going to be starting Queen of the Cicadas by V. Castro, a horror novel and I am so excited because I love everything V. Castro has written.

I finished Survive the Night today and mostly enjoyed it. It was a fast read, there were only a few moments when I was bored. The main character did annoy me, though, and I don't love some aspects of the ending. I gave it 3 stars overall.

I just finished This Poison Heart, and I really liked it. Weird and creative. It got a little complicated towards the end, but when I realized it was meant to start a series that made more sense. For those who seek out diverse characters, the main character is a bisexual Black teenager who was adopted as a baby by two married Black women. The characters are mostly BIPOC.

I found a novella recommended I think on Twitter about a black heroine in a period romance (she’s a pirate!) and it sounded cool, and it has all 5 stars reviews on Amazon… there was a typo on every single page. Some I’m not even sure what word the author was going for. It was so bad. I couldn’t read it and basically skimmed the second half. So so bad. Also incredibly cliche.

I put down Pack up the moon for a night it is just to much with the illness we have going on right now but it is good at the same time.
I picked up Kasie West's new one Sunkissed. Her books are so cute for YA

I finished Sweetpea the other day, it's the first of a trilogy. The story is about a serial killer woman who puts on a fake face to everyone around her but secretly hates everything (except for children and animals). It was actually really hilarious and the main character was super interesting. I'm pretty sure I'll read the second book in the series at some point.

Alyssa Cole writes great black romances. Some of them may be period romances, but I’ve only read A Princess in Theory and it was modern, but not your typical rom com.

i loved Dracula but not sure if I’m in the mood for gothic right now. Shadow of the Wind is one of my all time favourite books. I remember liking the second one too There are more! Zafon and his translator are amazing. This is good to know!

I’m having some trouble getting into it, but the premise seems interesting. I read both The People You Meet on Vacation and Beach Read last week to see what you all were talking about and because I needed some lighter fare. I liked TPYMOV more. Poppy’s relationship with her family reminded me a lot of my own, which endeared her to me. BR was a little too over the top for me. I broke down laughing several times reading the sex scenes, which I don’t think was the goal.

Her characters are great and the sex scenes are actually sexy and compelling. ETA: A Duke by Default is my favorite

I just finished a new release, Falling, and I LOVED IT. Five stars for me. It's about a pilot who is forced to choose between crashing the plane he's flying and killing all the innocent passengers, or his family being murdered. It was super fast paced and read like a classic action movie.

Finished The Night Swim the other day. I really liked it overall, though I was a little underwhelmed by the ending.
Finally picked up The Nightingale from the library today (been on the wait list for a while). Excited to start on that.

I finished The Soulmate Equation last night. The first few chapters were a little slow, but then it picked right up. I ended up really enjoying it!
Next up: The Unhoneymooners
