AmyG We do a similar thing to precool but without AC. I shut all windows and blinds by 7:30 am and then fully open back up around 6/7 pm. The house stays mostly cool but that 3-7 afternoon period can get hot in the kitchen. Did you have to sign up for a special program to allow them to adjust your smart thermostat if needed? yeah we have a special program thru srp with a smart thermostat and they gave us $100 credit for letting them be able to take control. they've never taken control yet. and if they do, they send you a text message and you can opt out like if you just can't handle the heat, or having a party or in the middle of something that needs cooler temps.

Yeah 4-9 is power savings here. They message it quite a bit. H has an alarm on his phone for 9 pm and that’s when we start charging our car or doing any higher energy activities that we didn’t get done before 4. We keep things pretty closed up during the day and fans on circulating air and then open everything around 6 or 7. That’s usually sufficient for us except 5ish days per summer when it doesn’t cool at night and I complain endlessly.

I can’t count on the last pic, but did any of the R senators attend? I counted 22 people, so 21 senators attended. According to Twitter (because I can't identify most on my own) it appears a few R's did attend. Sinema, however, did not attend. 🤔 Someone in the Twitter replies said Sinema has a broken leg and that’s probably why?

ComEd can take control of my thermostat if needed. I get a text and email alerting me and I can opt out. They also ask that power heavy applications like washing clothes, etc., be put off til later hours during power emergencies.
I don't like to set my AC over 72, but I grew up in Chicago without air conditioning and didn't have central air until 15 years ago. Not amusing, but for most do-able. The lasting result is I always try to look for cross ventilation in any housing. Some modern construction seems to forget that.
After the deadly heat wave of 1995, Chicago and surrounding suburbs have done a much better job of setting up cooling centers and trying to check on the most impacted, but it's a huge challenge for everyone. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can creep up on people.

I never thought about dish internet going out during heat waves, but guess it makes sense. 122 F isn't really that high in direct sun, though. Starlink dishes go into “thermal shutdown” once they hit 122° Fahrenheit link

Have we discussed this opinion piece? Because it is so good. I've been discussing this in my IVF forum. The US also woefully lacks assisting women with fertility treatments. You want a baby but your insurance doesn't cover IVF? Enjoy forking over $15-30k. Meanwhile many other countries provide treatments for free, or they are highly subsidized. So in the US, if you can't get pregnant naturally, you can basically GFY and then they'll blame you for the birth rate being low. I need to go have another round of testing with a new practice (diagnostic - so won't even help me conceive) - and just the HSG will cost $1500. ONE PROCEDURE. A discussion with my RE costs $350/ hour. It's incredibly cost prohibitive.

lemondrop I’m so sorry. I understand the cost of IVF and everything involved. I remember being really nervous about my job status too because going through treatments requires so many appointments and time away from work. Not to mention I added acupuncture and therapy on just to deal with it all. It’s all incredibly stressful. With rates of infertility rising it’s another thing the country will need to figure out if the birth rate drops too low.

My job being fully remote and my VP being the least micromanager on the planet is really a small silver lining to all of this. I don't know how I'd be handling this if I needed to be in an actual office.

I can't read the article because paywall but I totally agree that being a mother and wanting a fulfilling career is still a difficult balancing act that men don't understand. lemondrop you bring up an excellent point re: fertility coverage. Unless you work for a progressive thinking employer, it is so cost prohibitive. When I was looking at my coverage as I started TTC for the twins, I was shocked to see that my insurance covers 100% of fertility treatments, including IVF, no deductible required. The coverage is through my H and his county government insurance is even better than mine. It's such a shame that it isn't universal. Speaking of my H's employer, I just found out today that he has Friday off in observance of Juneteenth. It made me annoyed that my county employer has not yet adopted it as a holiday, ha. Maybe next year? Since by then the federal holiday will be official (assuming the House doesn't fuck it up) and usually states follow federal holidays right? I assume if my state makes it a holiday for state employees, my county would follow suit.

This heat wave is hitting the West. I saw that Denver has some cooling stations available for people to go for some respite from the heat. Salt Lake hit a record high with 107 degrees for today. The power companies were recommending trying to set thermostats at 78 to help alleviate the power grid workload. Ugh. I hope people are ok. I don’t have AC but 78 would be too hot for me. It was 78 on our living room level last night and so gross. We don’t have AC, so these heatwaves suck. Luckily last night once the sun went down, a breeze picked up. Tonight we fully plan to fill a kiddy pool in the backyard and stay out of the house.

There are women in my group who specifically seek out jobs where they know that IVF is covered (Bank of America, Tesla, Spotify, Starbucks, Salesforce). I work in clinical trials - my company covers NOTHING. Not a single penny for fertility. I won't lie, I've considered changing jobs for it.

It is a huge financial undertaking that can sometimes be worth the job change depending on circumstances. I mean, hell, while I do love my job and my coworkers, a major reason why I wanted to work in government is because the work/life balance and good benefits were so important to me. I want to work to live, not live to work. Finding an employer that values, understands, and encourages this was very much in the front of my mind. For me it meant accepting a significantly lower pay range (though still very comfortable) than I would otherwise be offered in the private sector.

The lack of institutional support for motherhood is appalling. I'm sorry for what you're going through, lemondrop. It's not right.

It's also not right that the U.S. is the only wealthy nation in the world that doesn't offer parental leave. When I was pregnant in 2019, a supervisor told me flat out they don't offer paid leave or even an option to purchase STD because they don't have to. Zero out your PTO balances and good luck.

I’m so sorry lemondrop. The US’s attitude toward and lack of IF coverage is so appalling. It makes me so mad. I was lucky to have an IF rider for testing and some assistance for IUIs at the company I worked for, and it was still so costly to conceive our DD with an IUI.

Gentle hugs and hair pats lemondrop, (I know you weren't trying to make it about you, but YOU are every other woman going through this) It really is a black mark on our society that we devalue parenting but especially motherhood so much
