I recognize that this is a weird question... I teach a high school class about protest music. We focus mostly on the 1950s-70s (Civil Rights and Vietnam) and tie it into current events and music. I’m planning to do a couple of classes focusing on music related to women’s rights/feminism/me too. I have a list of songs going, but I’d love more suggestions, particularly from people not the same age as me (I think we’ve established that I’m one of the more vintage people here...) Any suggestions? I’m particularly looking for songs that address major issues, not necessarily break-up/ f-u songs that are fun to dance to, as much as I appreciate those, too. Thanks!

Hmm there’s The Man by Taylor Swift. The lyrics are about sexism.
It starts out talking about how men who sleep with many women are “cool”, and men who are shrewd businessmen are respected whereas shrewd businesswomen are often vilified.
There are some references to women being judged based on what they wear, etc.

I immediately thought of Praying by Kesha. I'll try to think of others.

The Man and I’m Just a Girl are on my list! The video for The Man really drives the point home. I’ll check out the other one- I don’t know it. I listened to No Doubt when I was a teenager and had no idea what that song was about. I have a country song from the 70s called “The Pill” that made me want to cheer. She’s basically telling her husband he can’t control her anymore because “now I’ve got the pill.” I guess it was banned from radio stations when it was new. I have Ani DiFranco’s “Lost Woman Song” and a more recent song from Chile that has turned into huge group performances all over the world about rape and victim-blaming. Thanks for the suggestions! Please keep them coming!

My favorite would probably be
“You don’t own me”. But then I love me some old school.
And “respect”

And while googling the background of that song, I found this: americansongwriter.com/the-chicks-episode-of-people-have-the-power/"On this episode of People Have The Power, Grammy-winning group The Chicks share an epic playlist of nine protest songs. Their top picks create a roster with artists ranging from U2, M.I.A. and H.E.R. to Sting and Nina Simone." The three listed on this article are: Nina Simone “Backlash Blues” U2 "Sunday Bloody Sunday" M.I.A. “Bad Girls”
