I feel horrible for DS1’s teacher. She has gone above and beyond to kee the kids and herself safe this year (she still double masks while vaccinated) and now this. This just put me in such a shit mood on a Friday afternoon. The letter does say districts can implement stricter guidelines. So hopefully yours keeps on with the masks through the end of the year. I emailed out superintendent yesterday about next year because I'm psychic and he said that they would be likely required for our county.

richard I highly doubt they will. I live in a super conservative area where even restaurants have been having mask burning parties. I think parents will riot if their kids have to wear masks until the end if the state gives the option for them to be off. Yeah. Areas outside the cities are going to have issues. I'm sorry.

DS'S school has been sending letters to Cuomo asking him to drop the mask requirements for kids since the school year started. I'm sure I'll be getting a phone call about their new no masks policy by the end of the day.

The thing is I read the letter and it sounds like they just didn’t want confusion between camps and schools since there are camps at schools. I’m sorry but you know when the school year is out for your child versus when they are in an academic year/ program.

I was really hoping to send him back in September (he's virtual now) but he's got a number of medical issues and takes medication that affects his immune system so that's probably not happening. Fuck, I'm going to be a really terrible home school teacher.

Even in the cities... there’s an “unmask our children” rally tomorrow 🙄 And i was going to take the kids downtown tomorrow for pokemon go community day 😅 Work has an excellent number of gyms and there is a playground that no one ever uses within reach of a bunch of them. Win win... until I found out these assholes are planning to be there.

It’s just us underlings that see them and send word that we got them. And i’m sorry. This sucks. I wanted quarantines to go away but masks to stick around next year 😬

They post the letters on the school website probably to try and curb the # of angry calls from the massive amount of Covid deniers here.

Fuck, I'm going to be a really terrible home school teacher. I saw they might do regional or county virtual for places that don't have enough kids in the programs. If I see more on that I'll let you know. There are going to be kids that can't go back until vaccinated so they need to plan for that

Any of the NY people- did I just read the news right that schools can ditch the masks regardless of vaccination status of teachers/students? Wtf 😳

Totally, I don't think it makes sense to pull them for the last few weeks of school.

I feel very fortunate that my kids have been able to go to in-person school this year. After a year of masking, guess who is better at remembering to grab masks on our way out the door? The kids. They understand why we wear them and don’t complain about it. They have in no way been harmed by wearing a mask! If anything, they have gotten less colds and other minor illnesses this year.

I think the kids really take their cues from the adults around them. My kids absolutely never see or hear people complaining about masks. It's treated very matter of fact, like putting on sunscreen. And that's how they respond. It's not something to like or dislike, it's just what we do for health and safety.

(And that's not to say that if your kid hates masks you're an asshole; There are plenty of reasons outside of household attitudes toward the practice that kids, especially little ones, would object)

The uproar was something and it was for a very long time here a secondary violation (they couldn’t pull you over for not wearing one) Now nobody would think about getting in a car and not buckling up in my family

I just don’t get it. Even though I was concerned about indoor dining and capacity for retail and all that, I understand the motivation. Trying to save businesses and jobs. But what do we gain by having kids take their masks off in group settings? Like absolutely nothing of any value.

My kids didn't need to be virtual next year and this throws all of that into question. It will be ridiculous if they were full time in person all this year and next year virtual

But what do we gain by having kids take their masks off in group settings? Like absolutely nothing of any value. Reasons i have seen lately... some are valid, some are not: - speech issues, especially in the 2nd grade and below levels where kids are still learning sounds and articulation skills and being able to see lips moving is a big deal - water and food intake. Some parents complain that their children cannot sip water or snack over the day and are limited to specified times as this requires removal of masks - anxiety. Legitimate that some kids struggle more with anxiety as it can cause claustrophobic feelings - sensory issues, especially among the special needs community. Many schools have not allowed IEP/504 exemptions for this here - heat. It’s over 90 out at the moment and many schools don’t have AC or central air. I think this might be the motivator for it being Monday. We’re entering the first heat wave of the year already and have 3 weeks of school to go

My mom said people freaked out about seatbelts so I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise they act this way about masks. My parents didn't make me wear a seatbelt and I remember my mom getting pulled over for it more than once because I would just be roaming about in the car 😳 It's really amazing we survived 😂

People worry about this "speech issues, especially in the 2nd grade and below levels where kids are still learning sounds and articulation skills and being able to see lips moving is a big deal"
But in asian countries and places with high polution so kids wear masks from tiny ages, I dont see them worrying or complaining about it at all. So there must be ways to mitigate.

This seems silly
"water and food intake. Some parents complain that their children cannot sip water or snack over the day and are limited to specified times as this requires removal of masks"
Schools have always had times where you can and cannot eat and drink. Sure some schools allow water bottles in classroom, but not all.
