In “How to write about Black women,” Kendall writes, “The people most addicted to maintaining the status quo are those who reap the greatest rewards.” Can you think of ways in which you’re gaining or losing rewards from your own identity? What would you gain or lose in a society that is was truly equal?

Kendall cites the body positivity movement as one that is intended to be inclusive and yet frequently pushes out women of color. In what ways might this unintentional, but harmful, exclusivity occur? Can you think of any other movements that function in similar ways?

I haven't finished yet, I'm in #fasttailedgirls at the moment. It's not really new information, but it's very good for me to see it all laid out in one place. White women really are the worst as a group.

I got the audio book from our library and finished the end of last week. As a bi-racial person raised by a white mother- I didn't learn a lot of new things. It was nice having everything laid out the way it was though. I'm so, so tired of explaining myself and she phrases things in a way that's easier to digest.
The section on food did make me think a bit. I've always been pretty passionate on food deserts and just feeding kids, regardless of the reason. But the unintentional shaming of choices there really did hit home.

Ok, good I’m not alone in thinking there wasn’t much new information for me. I felt a little like a jerk for that. Regarding the food shaming, I’m so familiar with it because I lived it. I’ve called out coworkers and others for comments about food stamps and obesity. I was internally shouting YES to that whole chapter. Buying soda because it’s cheap and shelf stable. Being right on the edge of qualifying or not qualifying for food stamps. Trying to find some kind of enjoyment when being poor is crushing daily. I clearly remember the times when we qualified for food stamps and getting to fill up a shopping cart at the grocery store. I was so excited to have food, and I know my mom was humiliated. This was when you used actual paper food stamps that were extremely obvious.

We made just a little too much for food stamps though. We got food boxes from the church at holidays, which I thought was great, but I'm sure my parents hated.

I'm going to buckle down and try to read this whole thing over the next few days so I can join. I'm a couple chapters in but enjoying it. I agree that I'm familiar with a lot of what I've read so far but it's very digestible. I'm excited to get to the food chapter since food apartheid is one of my policy passions.
