ktg is it time for another pick and discussion? I wasn’t able to get Jesus and John Wayne in time for the last discussion. Has everyone read stamped from the beginning? I just started it. ETA. Let’s do Hood Feminism since most seem to want that one, and can get it from their library. I can’t update the thread title.

Yeah, let's do it! I fell off posting about Jesus and John Wayne because I decided to apply for grad school 🙈 but I did finish it. Maybe I'll find a minute to drag up that thread and post some thoughts beyond my existential screaming.
I am 100% up for basically any and all race-related history and information. I will see if I can get Stamped quickly, because it's on my list to read.
I would also throw out Hood Feminism for consideration at some point.

I would love to join, and am open to anything. I just picked up Hood Feminism and Do Better by Rachel Ricketts from my local book store. Stamped is available from my library.

::adds books to to-read list::
I can't join because I can't focus enough to read anything that isn't pure trash right now, but I'm writing all these down for when I can focus. (It's taken me months to make progress in B. Obama's book.)
ETA: I read Stamped from the Beginning last year. It's good.

ktg can you update the title to show hood feminism? The publisher had some book club discussion questions I can post. So far, these two statements are standing out to me: For a movement that is meant to represent all women, it often centers on those who already have most of their needs met. They need feminism to recognize that everything that affects women is a feminist issue, whether it be food insecurity, or access to transit, schools, or a living wage.

I actually can't edit the title - I can only do that on the board for which I'm a moderator. But you can, since it's your thread! If you use Tapatalk, I think you'll have to go mobile or desktop for it to work, though. I'm excited to talk about this one. I would love book club discussion prompts!

I was thinking we’d start discussing at the beginning of June? We can dump thoughts here as we have them while we are reading, and then use the discussion questions once most of us are done. Will that work? I’m reading the chapter on hunger and it is perfection.

Dang, my library won't have this for six weeks. I might cave and go buy it as I do really want to read it.
Don't tell the other tall stack of books on my shelf waiting to be read

I've reserved it, but I might just buy it too.
I just finished Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty, and I'm glad I read it, though it is so so f-ed up.

I got the book but dunno how it works. Are we to just start reading? Do we talk about each chapter? lol sorry I’m overthinking it. Start reading! Post thoughts as you like. Maybe there will be something more official once everyone has had a chance to get it and dive in.

I finished it. I don’t necessarily think I learned anything new. I think if you’ve been listening to Black women, (or any woman not white really) have experienced some of these things, or have family who have dealt with many of the issues discussed, it is probably not new information.
I really appreciated how clearly she laid everything out. I came away thinking that hopefully I can debate the same way, when my first impulse is to get angry. And then the last chapter was all about anger.
So anyway, I’m still processing and organizing my thoughts. But I’ll start posting discussion questions for anyone who wants to respond. I know it’s not quite June.

Discussion question
In Kendall’s introduction to the book, she warns us, “it’s not going to be a comfortable read, but it is going to be an opportunity to learn for those who are willing to do the hard work.” Did you find sections of this book uncomfortable to read? Which ones, and why? Did it change your thinking about any issues?

Discussion question
In “solidarity is still for white women,” Kendall tells us that many white feminists dismissed her #solidarityisforwhitewomen as infighting. Have you ever experienced what might be considered infighting in your community, or in campaigns in which you’ve been involved? What was your reaction to it at the time? Did Kendall’s reframing of infighting change your thinking about it?

Discussion question
Kendall writes, “It’s not enough to know that other women with different experiences exist; you must also understand that they have their own feminism formed by that experience.” As examples, she cites the belief that women who wear the hijab must be “saved” from mandated veiling, and reproductive-justice arguments that suggest that giving birth to a disabled baby is a reason to abort. Can you think of any other examples of how feminism is weaponized against other women “for their own good?”

Discussion question
What types of narrative negatives have you heard in your life about food stamps and other meal assistance programs? Does Kendall address those arguments in her book? What does she say about them?

Bumping for June and to add additional discussion questions.
In her discussion of sexual abuse and rape of Black women, Kendall argues, “it’s easy to blame the patriarchy, to rightfully point at the men who rape and hold them accountable. What’s harder is to notice the women who sometimes passively direct rapists toward their victims by contributing to the hypersexualization of women of color under the guise of empowerment.” What does Kendall mean by this? Can you think of any recent pop culture examples of appropriation that may fall into this category? Is this framing new to you?
