I’m just sad. I don’t even know how the sentencing will go. Even when cops are found guilty it doesn’t mean much. Like look at Jason van dyke- on camera shown he killed Laquan McDonald with 17 shots in his back and he got SIX FUCKING YEARS. six years for killing a 17yo in the back as he walked away from them. We need gun reform and police system reform / abolishment. A couple of interesting police reform ideas I've seen floating around: requiring that officers and departments carry insurance likened to malpractice insurance--if you keep fucking up and the insurers have to pay out, you'll be impossible to insure and, therefore, to employ. Also, licensing. As a teacher, I had to be licensed in the state where I taught. There were rigorous standards for preliminary and ongoing professional education. Disciplinary action against my license could be taken, which would affect employability.

Like nursing we have continuing education required to keep our license, plus annual modules we have to complete to stay with our job. Doctors, RTs, NTs, do too.

Eric Nelson filed an appeal for a new trial citing jury misconduct among other things. I'm concerned because it seems like the juror who has been speaking out did not disclose that he went to a BLM protest on his jury questionaire. Full disclosure, I have not actually read anything in detail, just the headlines. Any lawyers want to weigh in?

redbears I saw he also alleges misconduct by the prosecution and something about the court not sequestering the jury or allowing the trial to be relocated. He's throwing every possible excuse out there hoping one sticks. That's not to say that you shouldn't worry, because I am, too, but I also expected him to try anything and everything. ETA: Not a lawyer, so if I'm wrong, I will defer to those who are. I'm mad, even though I expected a challenge or appeal. The jury got it right and it shouldn't be overturned because of some technicality.

Nelson brought some of those issues at end of trial. I’m not surprised
As far as the juror is concerned he’s not specifically named it’s just juror misconduct. Nelson still throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks.
It’s actually how the system is supposed to work. Unfortunately it only works that way in most cases for white people.

I'm late to this conversation. Most states I am familiar with do require licensing. It's typically called something along the lines of "Peace Officer Standards and Training" or POST. That said, unlike other professional licenses (teachers, doctors, medical professionals, etc.) there is no national coordination. Each state is free to set and enforce (or not) its own standards. For me, one of the key pieces of reform is addressing qualified immunity. Qualified immunity applies to all government employees carrying out their job functions but is 99% of the time applied to law enforcement. It is designed to protect the ability of a person to make a split second decision in a tense or highly evolving situation. This doctrine is a creation of courts in civil rights cases. There have been a series of United States Supreme Court cases that really have entrenched qualified immunity. Current case law requires that there is a prior case directly on point before liability attaches. Meaning the first person gets a pass, but the subsequent people are liable. www.americanbar.org/groups/public_education/publications/insights-on-law-and-society/volume-21/issue-1/qualified-immunity/

The amount of 'maybe this time he'll (meaning chauvin)get a fair trial' and 'floyd shouldnt have done drugs' comments I have read in the past 24 hours is SICKENING.

American Sonnet for My Past and Future Assassin by Terrance Hayes
I only intend to send word to my future Self perpetuation is a war against Time Travel is essentially the aim of any religion Is blindness the color one sees under water Breath can be overshadowed in darkness The benefits of blackness can seem radical Black people in America are rarely compulsive Hi-fivers believe joy is a matter of touching others Is forbidden the only word God doesn’t know You have to heal yourself to truly be heroic You have to think once a day of killing your self Awareness requires a touch of blindness & self Importance is the only word God knows To be free is to live because only the dead are slaves

Quick snapshot Shooting was 'justified' No officers will be criminally charged.
They released about 4 minutes of body cam (cnn did not show it)
This is BAD.

Because: Brown had a rap sheet of drug crimes and a hx of trying to evade arrest. They claim he was trying to use his car as a weapon, even though he was turning away from the officers as he was shot. DA is talking over the reporters as they try to clarify this point. The officers shot because "they perceived danger". They still won't release the full video.

Oh, and the DA is blaming social media and "falsehoods", and "people seeing what they want to see" in regards to the blowback of another case of officers murdering a black man. DA is very defensive.

DA is blaming the Brown family attorneys for this process "going this way" as though he doesn't have complete control over how this could have gone.

The DA did NOT inform the family ahead of this announcement.
Said the relationship with the family is fractured. YOU FUCKING THINK SO?

They are revisiting the press conf from earlier and I'm still just sitting here in shock. they've also showed the body cam footage that the DA showed, all one minute of it, half of which is riding in the back of a truck, armed to the hilt, then jumping out fully armed yelling GO GO GO. WHAT NORMAL PERSON who saw that coming at them WOULDNT try to drive away?
I'm sitting here hoping the DOJ and Garland issue something very soon, like in the next couple of hours, saying that they are opening an investigation.
