Yesterday I had 3 male flowers on my first zuke plant open. Also the persimmon tree flower buds are the cutest little flowers.

I thought I got rid of all of our lily of the valley last year, ugh. I hate the way it spreads and it's toxic. It was contained to one garden bed in our backyard, thought I pulled it all out, and found it all through 2 front yard beds this weekend. Otherwise, though, I'm so thrilled with how things are looking. The bradford pear & forsythia are dropping their leaves but were beautiful. Now our flowering trees (redbud, crabapple, lilac) are in full bloom. It's all so pretty.
What do you all do with daffodils after they flower? Just leave the foliage in place until it dries up and then cut it down? I know that's best for the plants but we have sooo many and it just looks so unsightly with the leaves flopping everywhere. My neighbor braids hers and I think it looks cool but I don't think that's great for them.

Meanwhile it's still snowing here. I lost all my zinnia sprouts because I left them out overnight. 😭

catspajamas we have a gazillion daffodils as well and we tie up the greenery in bunches according to what we found on line when trying to figure out what to do with them last year. We haven’t yet though, since our backyard bunnies like to hide in them. A veritable daffodil jungle in our yard right now 😂

AmyG or any other desert gardeners, I am looking for some flowers for my flower garden over the summer. I usually do vincas and sunflowers but I'm wanting something different. Any ideas?

I'm surprised you said alyssum. Mine die over the summer and come back like crazy October-ish. I haven't tried the other 3, so I'll get some seeds. Thanks for the ideas.

Thanks for the ideas. if my alyssum can get enough water and some kind of afternoon shade, it might live thru the summer. I struggle to keep anything going in july/august, myself included. eh my roses like the heat pretty much I guess as long as they get enough water. my metal flowers do well in july full sun too. lol

I grew up in the southwest and remember coneflowers and Mexican hats always did really well and had nice color. And California poppies, although they’re brief.

I don’t do anything with mine until they’re totally withered and I can rake them up. But they’re in the backyard and I’m pretty lazy. 😅

iruntodrink I direct sow my zinnias around Mother’s Day and have beautiful flowers by late July. I did start some early to get some color earlier, but it’s not too late.

I tried an unsuccessful politics mental health break, but this thread is everything I need. I am very terrible with plants, but I'm trying.
We just had our garden tilled and a flowerbed on the side of the garage that was empty. Our house is almost 30 years old and a lot of the landscaping was getting overgrown so I've been slowly working on ripping things out since we moved in 5 years ago.
We're attempting a pollinators garden on the side of the garage. DD and I threw down some seeds today after it was tilled, I still need to get more though. We also planted some Zinnea seeds, Poppies because I miss CA, and Sweet William. I got some Bleeding Hearts a few weeks ago from someone that was thinning theirs out that look terrible since we got snow last week, hopefully they make it since I have a big chunk of root.
I'm also working on moving some of my Hostas. We have big leaf ones and 2 varieties of smaller leaf ones; white/green and light green/green. I dug up some of the big leaf ones today to move them further back in the beds where there used to be bushes and then I'm going to layer some of the light green/green ones in front of them. I also ordered a mountain hydrangea so hopefully that takes. I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing.
Last year our vegetable garden did terrible. The year before, our first, was okay. We also planted late so that probably didn't help. We're trying a few starts in the house, we'll see how they do, and I have a bunch of seeds also. Tomato, zucchini, carrot, radish, peppers, pumpkin, watermelon, sunflowers, cucumber. I also have rhubarb my mom gave me from her garden that is coming up nicely despite the snow.

This TikTok had me laughing and thought you all would appreciate it too. vm.tiktok.com/ZMeCPNNoM/While I was down with my s/e from 2nd vaccine, my mom and boys planted the herbs. They used small containers and we are green housing it in a disposable cake container. Quite a few have started to sprout. I’m so excited! Now to figure out a more permanent solution.

mrsweasley my sister who lives near you always had the most beautiful butterfly bushes, that might look nice on the side of your garage if it’s full sun. Also black eyed Susan’s and cone flower.

I'm definitely going to plant some coneflower. The Cinci Zoo had some good resources and partners with local nurseries so I have some plans to check stuff out. We had a butterfly bush from my parent's garden but unfortunately it didn't come back after the 2nd year. The side of the garage is west facing, so I wonder if it didn't get quite enough sun or if it was just a fluke. My dad said they're basically impossible to kill, but I have a knack for plant murder 😬

I spent the weekend in the dirt! Splitting and moving plants around. Tomorrow I’m going to finish digging out some huge hostas and finding them a new home. I work next weekend, then I think it’ll be safe to move all my plants outside.

Back from my long weekend away and I guess there was a heatwave. Any little sproutlings got zapped, including the baby sunflowers my DD brought home from school. 😞
My first zuke is growing and got another female this morning. Looking forward to all the zucchini!

Feeling pretty proud of my chaotic little suburban homestead these days. Beets, kale, garlic, turnips, carrots, tomatoes, red bell pepper, sunflowers, and squash in this bed. And weedy arugula. Tomatillos and black cherry tomato on the patio. Soooo many cherries this year! Little handful of strawberries every day. Mint, basil, Roma tomato. Me and Buttercup just for fun 😆

ENOUGH WITH THE FROST WARNINGS. Help me help you, Mother Nature!! Same. I haven't bothered sowing any of the veggie or herb seeds I have because the cold weather just won't freaking leave. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this weekend.

I bought a bunch of seeds from a government group trying to repopulate native species. All the seeds are wild harvested and. Really excited to be growing a bunch of native plants that range from ornamental to medicinal to edible! Sowed quite a few seeds tonight.
We are buying a mini tractor soon and we will start creating our food Forrest/garden on our plots of land. Squeegee!!!
