Btw I can't remember if I updated about this, but Delegate Danica Roem had a bill about school lunch program debt that didn't quite make it to passage this past session but it looks poised for passage in the next special session (of which I suspect there will be one)
The bill summary: School board policies; school meal debt; enforcement. Requires each school board to adopt a policy that prohibits the board from filing a lawsuit against a student or the student's parent because the student cannot pay for a meal at school or owes a school meal debt. School board policies; school meal debt; enforcement. I would love for public schools to have free breakfast and lunch. Someone remind me why we can’t do this again?

I mean really, those kids should just bootstrap harder.

Because no one gives a shit about schools and providing funding to them to be able to offer these kinds of services. It's why teachers hoard left overs from the cafeteria in their rooms; so we can feed the kids for free instead.

I've seen firsthand what universal free meals for students can do-- it truly makes a huge difference in the entire community. If we know that child hunger is a huge problem in this country, and we know that most of our children attend a school at least some of the time, there's no good reason not to just universally, across the board, feed the children at school.
I don't have specific data on how free school based meals can help with truancy because of the many many underlying concerns WRT truancy but I suspect universal free meals could help us work through that too.
Bring it to a vote. Good luck to anyone who thinks they need to argue that kids shouldn't be fed regardless of demonstrable need. And by "good luck" I mean GFY.

I will die on the free school meals for all hill and that school lunch debt is a fucking travesty of a failed capitalist state.
Denying children food because of some made up BS about their parents is one of the cruelest things our society does.

There is zero reason to not feed children at school. Unless you are a soul sucking demon of a human who can look at a hungry child and not have an ounce of compassion. Zero. We spend billions on aid to other countries on farm subsidies on defense. We can spend a couple million to make sure a kid gets at least one if not two meals Monday through Friday.

Obviously there are so many terrible things in this world but the thought that we would knowingly let children go hungry just cuts straight through me. It's unconscionable.

My district has had universal free breakfast for a few years now and this year free lunch is included for everyone. I hope it continues even next year.
And also, we don't need it but I love not having to pack a lunch, and my kid lives school lunch. It's really healthier than what we could pack because we don't have to worry about not keeping it hot/cold.

Yeah agree 💯 Not only that, but many parents won’t apply for free or reduced lunch for various reasons. There’s also the stigma of other students knowing who gets free or reduced lunch. Or if the family income is too high to qualify, but they cannot afford to send any type of quality lunch to school. I lived this life. Food should be available to all at school. Period.

My district has free breakfast and lunch for all students through some program from the state. During the pandemic they have even used the school buses to deliver the meals to virtual students. My kid has a dozen food allergies so we aren't signed up for the route but I'm glad it's been available.

I said this in last weeks thread but now I have a better link
Bryant T Marks is doing an hour long training on Scripps stations around the country on uncovering hidden bias. He is an excellent presenter and if you can tune in. Because its an important topic.

A little-known element of President Biden’s massive stimulus relief package would pay billions of dollars to disadvantaged farmers — benefiting Black farmers in a way that some experts say no legislation has since the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Of the $10.4 billion in the American Rescue Plan that will support agriculture, approximately half would go to disadvantaged farmers, according to estimates from the Farm Bureau, an industry organization. About a quarter of disadvantaged farmers are Black. The money would provide debt relief as well as grants, training, education and other forms of assistance aimed at acquiring land. www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/03/08/reparations-black-farmers-stimulus/

I did just read a second article about the dogs that they often go away when Jill is traveling.
My guess is that Major will also get some more training.

There is such a stigma with GSDs. It’s a shame because most are so well tempered and mild and yes fiercely loyal; mine stayed between our newborn DD and my dad who he didn’t know for 2 days before trusting him.

I tell mine all the time its a good thing he's pretty because he is not smart. But he is pretty protective of C. If I start tickling her or rough housing he gets really upset. One time my bff (who has walked into my house since the time I've had him at 8 weeks) came in, he rushed up to her, licked her feet, got pets, went laid down and then came back up to bark at her for not knocking.
However we ARE well protected from squirrels, other people half a mile down the road walking their dog and leaves blowing across the yard.

HR 8 (universal background checks) and HR 1446 (closing the Charleston loophole) made it out of the Rules committee yesterday evening but I'm not sure exactly when they'll come to the floor, between ARP and the suspension nonsense last night. It *could* come up when they convene today at noon.
