Seriously, fuck the IRS.
I’m following the subreddit IRS forum and there are thousands and thousands of people who filed early like me and are stuck still without refunds and the system not recognizing our returns. People on Reddit have already called again today — the day told to many in the last week to try again if there is no update — and have been told that due to errors and covid, processing may take an additional 5-10 WEEKS. This is frankly unacceptable. For me personally, the money is going to help pay off some debt so it’s not like I need it today but so many people are suffering and need and rely on that money come tax time. It’s unconscionable honestly.
It also means that the stimulus money will be affected if tax returns aren’t recognized. The new bill has a check back provision where the IRS will look again after the 2020 tax season is over and issue the rest of the stimulus if you are owed more than you were based on 2019 taxes (which will be the case for me) but that won’t happen until July.
It is such a fucking mess and it’s honestly surprising that the media hasn’t picked up on it yet.

I filed early, it was accepted on opening day (which was a little later this year), and I've had my refund for a couple of weeks. Granted, simple return filed via TurboTax, and I always pay TurboTax's fees via charge card, not out of anticipated refund.

Mine is pretty simple too. MFS, claiming 3 kids, no other complicated situations, aside from Schedule H for my nanny. My H is doing our house stuff on his return. There is really no reason mine should be delayed or flagged.

willow, thanks for the response, and I hope that they're just being conservative with their processing estimate and everything will get done faster for everyone. With mine, one day I logged in to check 'where's my refund', and it said something like three weeks. And, surprise, two days later there it was sitting in my bank account. So weird.

I don't get this at all. I early voted for the 2020 election, and our county polling place provided some folding chairs for those who needed them. Totally non-partisan - and awfully official, come to think about it. I mean, maybe, maybe I could see it being best practice to provide such assistance in a non-partisan manner - and certainly not, IMO, hey, no water for you unless I can verbally pitch my candidate to you at the same time LOL. But I don't see what the issue is for providing such assistance in a universal fashion?

I assume the hope is that people will simply not vote bc the lines are long, or will queue for a while before giving up. You're right that there's no reasonable objection to giving people water.

I’ll be buying the April Marie Claire (it was always the magazine I read on long flights, which obviously hasn’t happened in a long time). Stacey Abrams looks positively regal on the cover. Plus Ashley Ford is great.

It's ridiculous! It's like when whoever made the law against giving homeless people food! I'd probably still go give people water and risk a fine/arrest.

For the sake of discussion, I could squint and see that a law saying that any assistance offered to people waiting in voting lines must be nonpartisan in nature might be ok. No candidate labels on water bottles or coffee cups, no indication of party on tee shirts, nothing much more than 'thank you for voting', basically no electioneering no matter how far from the polling place the line may go. But going beyond that seems ridiculous to me.
And, again, when I've run into this in my county (fairly split red and blue) the folding chairs outside the polling place were unmarked and provided by the county. Has it been different in other areas?

Oh, I'm not ok with partisan voter relief efforts. Don't be passing out RNC branded bottles of water. But I've never seen anything like that.

It's frustrating though because many people getting their refunds filed after Feb 12 which seems completely backward since they always say file as early as you can. Again, for me it's more just irritation that I may be waiting a few months, but we don't need the money to get by. There are many people on the subreddit that count on the refund every year to help them get through and now they will possibly be waiting even longer for their additional stimulus money too since the IRS fucked it all up so badly.

Has it been different in other areas? I think it already has to be nonpartisan. Definitely here in Virginia. No campaigning, campaign related attire, etc... allowed. It’s only seen as politically motivated because the areas that are underserved by polling sites and get long lines tend to be in heavily democratic districts with a history of voter suppression. Really, we should expand vote-by-mail and early voting in all states. And provide disability services to those who need them to vote. Make it easy and quick for everyone who is eligible to cast their ballot. No one should have to spend hours in a voting line - that is a travesty in itself.

I am loving how it’s gradually trickling out just how progressive this legislation actually is. It’s really amazing how many people it has the potential to meaningfully help in so many ways. Food security, access to health care, tax relief in unemployment, a child benefit to make sure families have the funds to cover the basics for their kids.

I submitted like, February 4, but I knew filing didn't open til Febuary 12. But I did get the 'accepted' notice right on February 12. To a point, I do have some sympathy for the IRS. As I understand it, their technology isn't exactly state of the art, they've been understaffed for years, and the last year or so has been crazy with all the stimulus payments and other tax law changes. But, that doesn't help those who use their tax returns as a 'forced savings account' and count on a set refund date - which I've done for most of my life, to be sure.

I think people would respond better if their messaging was more than just "we have errors" or "wait another 10 weeks" or the million other things people have heard from the IRS. It feels like people are being given the runaround. I know they are overwhelmed with what is going on but the randomness of who is getting their refunds also doesn't make sense. It should go first in time but it isn't.

:files away for the "No gov't, free market" fuckers: I read something when this first came out that people were told to look to charitable orgs or federal programs for assistance with these large bills. What a crock.
