How do you guys feel about kids’ sports right now? H wants our kids to do soccer since they haven’t done it since the fall of 2019. I am very hesitant due to the pandemic. For reference this would be for 5-6 year olds in one league and 7-8 year olds in the other. I can already guarantee no masks on the kids while playing. We are starting soccer in a couple of weeks with my five year old. It's outside and just the girls in her class that she's around all day anyway. Kids sports have been doing okay here I think (this will be our first attempt besides tennis, but that's just my girls and one instructor outside so they are distanced).

I had my kids in soccer last fall, they were K and 2nd grade. We did it because there were 5 and 9 kids on their teams, they had in-person school with most of the kids, and it was outdoors. Masks were required in sidelines but not playing.
I think it really depends on your community to know what will be ok. I used to live in a city setting and the leagues had kids from lots of different neighborhoods. I don’t know if I’d be as ready to do sports if we didn’t have relationships with the families also participating.

We are doing baseball. We started with a baseball coach one day per week with 3 other kids in the fall. It’s indoor, but all masked, no parents, temp checks. We stopped going in Dec through mid Jan because other people were traveling and it was crazy surge here.
Little league just started last weekend. H is the coach. Temp checks, masking, no touching or sharing any equipment. If anyone tests positive we are out for two weeks per league rules. Only play games against one other team all season.
Idk. It makes me nervous but I need him to move physically a couple days a week. We are kind of picking that over in person school right now because the thing we struggle with the most is physical activity. DS has a ton of energy but he’s lazy and will choose not to do any movement unless there are other kids around. So mentally and physically he needs it. I hope it will be safe and everyone will follow the rules.

They wore masks (I don’t think they had to wear them while actively playing, but most did, especially as it got cooler and they were more used to it) and parents had to wear them too. Everything was outside. The league took things seriously and you were supposed to take your kids temp before coming, etc. Everything went well and there were no cases associated with the season. We’d do it again this spring if DD wanted to do. ETA the team was all girls from her grade at her school and she had a friend doing it. There was a practice and game each week. Even aside from the physical activity, we thought her being around kids was so important and made a difference.

Contact-ish sports like soccer and basketball make me nervous. DS2 did tennis in the fall and it was wonderful for him. Outdoors. Everyone was masked. Everyone was distanced. There was no sharing of equipment and there were strict protocols about exposure/screening. I was so glad for him to be able to do that and felt 100% safe. He will likely do tennis again in the spring and DS1 wants to try archery. DD misses ballet but I'm a no on indoor stuff for right now.

Somebody tell me to stop buying plants. In the last few weeks I've bought sunflower seeds, milkweed, some native honeysuckles, salvia, blueberry bushes, black eyed Susans....I could go on. This is on top of the seeds I started for bee balm alongside my veggie seedlings. And I'm eyeing mountain laurel next.
I might have a problem.

We start Girls on the Run at the end of the month. Part social skills part running. Last year they we got shut down mid season so I’m hoping they got it figured out since it’s outside anyway.

Before March of last year, my 6 yo was in weekly swimming lessons and she had made so much progress and it was so good for her gross motor. She hasn't been since the last week of February 2020 and I really want to put her back in but I'm just so nervous about making the commitment. I think I would be more comfortable with outside sports like soccer or softball than indoors and am strongly considering signing up my almost 3 yo for something in the Spring. I hate making these decisions. If you would like a positive anecdote, we kept our 5-yr old in swim. The instructor wears a mask and face shield, and the largest her class has been since March last year is 3 kids. Total people allowed in the pool area is 10. Only one adult per child allowed to wait. Temp checks every time you enter the building. The gym we go to has gymnastics, dance, ninja, etc also, and they haven't had to shut down at all for exposure. They changed their schedule to allow for plenty of space for everyone, and everyone wears masks for all the other classes. It's been a positive experience and nice to have a tiny bit of normalcy.

We’ve also continued riding lessons for our girls, actually pretty grateful that we only had to take a short break during the shutdown last spring from them. But I think other families have also started to think this is a good idea and it’s now hard to find open lesson slots...

The instructor is out of the pool on the edge and the parents are in with the babies/toddlers with space between.

We did tennis camp last summer and they did a good job of spreading out the kids and limiting numbers on each side of the courts. Lots of accessibility to hand sanitizer. Of course then there weren't the numbers that we saw in fall/winter, so no one was masked outside. I think we'll probably do it again this summer and be masked this time, hoping others are too. As I type this, though, they haven't issued any notice of camps and classes for this summer so I don't even know if they'll be available.

I’ve started pansies, amaranth, marigolds, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and herbs inside. I’m winter sowing milkweed, zinnias, cosmos and more of what I started inside. We are currently in false spring, I know second winter is coming, but I’m so ready to garden. I have a whole list of plants I want to add to my already huge gardens. Who needs grass?

I am extremely grateful that DD’s preschool is running an outdoor program where masks are required. Even if it always seems to sleet on preschool days (the class is under a big pavilion, so we don’t actually get wet during class).

Gosh, I’m having just an awful time parenting DS lately. I don’t know what to attribute it to but I’m at my breaking point. He’s always been strong willed and challenging but he’s just walking all over me lately. Every tact I take is failing. I can’t yell anymore. He’s at an age where I should be able to speak/reason with him and it just doesn’t work.
Nothing needed, I’m just venting and putting this here because I need to get my feelings out. I’m sitting at my desk sobbing over how badly the morning went.

jaygee , I wonder if it's the age? My DD1 is 7.5/2nd grade (I think the same as your DS?) and general consensus from everyone I know with this age is that things are really tough right now. Hugs <3 I've had days like that myself lately.

Hugs <3 I've had days like that myself lately. It could be. Yes, same exact age. It’s like they are trying on this big kid persona but it doesn’t fit yet. And I keep questioning if I need to have him evaluated for ADHD or anxiety. When he was in school we had the data point that the problems we have at home do not persist in other settings so we just kept on keeping on. But now that he’s home all the time it all feels so much more overwhelming. But I also have no frame of reference because I only have one kid and I don’t know a lot of kids his age enough to know what behavior is in range and what may need help or be out of his control. I just feel isolated. H is very much - this is typical behavior and he’s just got our number so we have to outlast him and I am not as sure.

Instructor wears a face shield and parents stay out of the pool room. cp3 - are there any kids in your bubble/life that you can hook up with to join in a private ish class?

I’m especially mad that this morning went south because I made a point to watch the Second Gentleman read I Dissent with DS this morning. I thought the quality time in the morning would help fill his bucket but it did not.

Starting to feel like spring, just heard the Wednesday tornado warning siren test.
Also have to pick up seeds for lots of things from the library today/tomorrow. So grateful there is a seed library at our library.

jaygee DS2 will be 8 this month. We are also struggling with all the big things and all the growing happening. He is struggling to want to go to school every morning. Apparently he isn’t feeling fulfilled on his weekends and would like to stay home. It is a lot. Plus, he is like parenting my sister, so that is a fun bonus.
