Sen Warren proposed a wealth tax. Does POTUS have any appetite for a wealth tax?
Jen: POTUS strongly believes that the richest must start paying their fair share, and that our taxation system must reward work and not wealth. He is good friends with Liz and they share the same values.

How should foreign leaders respond to POTUS with Trump out there saying he will run again and they could get screwed over by America again?
Jen: Well we kicked his ass once, we can do it again.

WHO has called the situation in Brazil re: the pandemic "a tragedy." What is the WH doing about Brazil?
Jen: USAID has delivered $1.5m in emergency Covid reponse bc we want to be a collaborative partner in getting the pandemic under control. We have to focus on getting our own population vaccinated right now, but we believe the more people vaccinated worldwide, the better.

Is there any possibility of a nationwide portal for finding vaccine appointments, since it's been a cluster?
Jen: we did announce the vaccine finder tool but that's in a pilot stage in just about a dozen states, that could certainly be expanded. We're also engaging in outreach to people who don't have internet access.

what's plan C for getting the minimum wage increase?
We're consulting with Congress and their staffs on the best vehicle moving forward. We're still committed to it, but we don't know right now how we will specifically get it done.

since Trump said everyone should get their vaccine, do you think that would be useful in convincing Republicans to get vaccinated?
Jen: Uhhhhhh we are making sure we have enough vaccines and vaccinators to get everyone vaccinated who wants one. We certainly welcome the encouragement from anyone.

no final decision yet on whether POTUS will attend the G7 in person in June, will be based on Covid situation and restrictions.

If the J&J vaccine is a single dose, why not prioritize sending that one to harder to reach communities?
Jen: FDA makes those decisions. The guidance we've received is that every American should take whatever vaccine is available to them. (Zients said this morning that they don't want the appearance that they have different vaccines for different populations, especially with the [incorrect] belief by some that the J&J vaccine is less effective)

to put it more simply, it's not going to look good if people get the impression that the less effective vaccine is being sent to the most vulnerable communities

Zeke: Why on earth are we not punishing MBS? Jen: this was obviously a horrific crime, but the ODNI report didn't tell us anything new that we would be forced to immediately act upon. But we have taken important steps against other Saudis ??????? I don’t understand this at all. Since they knew it happened and didn’t act at the time, there’s nothing they will do now?

is POTUS mad that people are being mean about him not punishing MBS? Jen: it's his job to act in the interest of the American people and he believes what he is doing now is in our long-term interests Ok, I should have read further.

Oh man, a year ago I had just come back from a girl's weekend at Disney World, where we ate all the food at Epcot and ran a 40K person half marathon.
We also had one lone student start coming to school in a mask. All the other kids teased him mercilessly. Jokes on all of us now. I remember standing around in the hall with a group of teachers trying to figure out if we were going to shut down and how that would work. I used one of my planning periods to go to Wegmans and try to stock up on thing.
Crazy.
And in less than two weeks our kids will have lost an entire year of quality education and everything else schools offer. It's so fucking depressing.

I remember getting the email that we would conduct a company-wide test of WFH on 3/13, and a bunch of us looking at each other going "Are we sure conducting this test on Friday the 13th is the best idea?" I also brushed H off for saying we wouldn't be back in the office until fall at the absolute earliest. Sorry for that, H. H's company did the same thing. He actually started working there at the beginning of February and he asked about employees working from home. They said it wasn't part of their culture. LOL. He hasn't stepped foot in their building since March 12. We announced March 16th would be the last day of school for a two week shutdown. And I spent all this time preparing work to give the students on that last day. I thought maybe it would get pushed out to a month..

I spent 2.5 years asking my employer for ONE telework day per week, and I only got it in mid 2019 when I pushed back on nonexistent maternity leave policies. Now they're singing praises of our productivity while wfh and I doubt I'll ever work 4x a week in their office again.

They are even now considering never having the admin types come back on site. We are still mandatory max telework, but I'm hoping I'll only be in office 1-2 days per week in the new normal.

I was reading an interesting article from somewhere about how WFM is changing how we live in our spaces. Open floor plans don’t work as well with multiple family members all doing different things. It will be fun to see how trends change.
ETA: not WFM, WFH

oreobitsy, we were never big fans of the open concept, that was one of the big selling points of our 100 year old craftsman house (we bough 6 months before the pandemic). Still so glad!

I remember things getting canceled the weekend of March 14th. I had a St. Patrick's Day 5K on the 14th that got canceled (we got a free entry to this year's race, who knew it'd be canceled too), but the girls and I had tickets to Miss Nelson is Missing at the local theater and were able to go. I remember thinking it might be our last outing for a while, maybe a couple of months but I never thought longer than that. That afternoon they went on a play date and we talked about the possibility of school getting closed. The next day it was announced and we spent March 16-17 getting ready for 2 weeks of e-learning. LOL. My 1st grader had work for the next two weeks and a bonus just in case we were still closed the first week of April. I didn't think we'd go back April 1st but thought maybe after spring break. I had no idea the hell scape that was ahead.
I actually think the spring was okay. We had beautiful weather and it seemed like we were being given the gift of time with things being closed. We went on walks and watched movies. People were mostly cheerful and supportive and the virus wasn't really bad in SC. I figured things would get back to normal over the summer and school would be fine in the fall. Once the new school year loomed it was bad and I feel like I've been in a constant state of stress since then and it kept getting worse with no end in sight. I'm feeling optimistic as we look to summer and hope I'm not disappointed.

ETA: not WFM, WFH I heard this crazy NPR story about the rise in visits to orthopedists bc everyone has extra stuff around their houses and keep stubbing their toes. Also we're spending more time barefoot so a toe stubbing has the potential to actually cause injury.

DD and I were driving back from the Hill last March and I was listening to that morning's The Daily, and that was the first time I had heard that patients were isolated and dying without their loved ones and that really rattled me. And at pickup that afternoon I asked one of the other parents (we are friendly but usually just at the pool or school pickup, not like 'girls night' friends) what she thought of all this and if schools might get closed. Haven't seen her since, because that was our last school pickup.

Last summer my H had just gotten back from a Costco run and stacked several pallets of water/sparkling water in the hallway tempor. Guess who came around the corner and dislocated her pinky toe? 🥴 Same foot that I broke a couple years ago and somehow the recent injury reactivated the midfoot pain from the break? I don't know if that's actually a thing or not but in any case my foot hasn't felt right since. 😔
