Our son's teacher was on quarantine because she had gone to Milan for Carnival. So we were already pretty deep i to the oh shit territory. Still 1 week away from pulling out kids from school and 2 weeks out from schools closing. But these weeks were pretty crazy.

I was on a trip for my work's annual meeting. We threw out some extra hand sanitizer and people were being more cautious about shaking hands, etc. But for the most part it was just a normal meeting. There were probably about 400 people there. One of our VPs from our DC office was talking about how bad it was going to be and we were all basically referring to him as chicken little. We should have listened.
I am currently working on that same meeting for this year, fully virtual.

I remember in January last year, telling MH this was going to be really bad and he rolled his eyes at me. Then in February, I remember telling him I was going to start stocking up on things and he laughed at me. And then March came and I said we need to plan for when they close the schools and he swore there was no way they would close. Then 2 weeks later, everything was closed and the crushing silence that followed was so damned scary.

We started discussion at work about wfh, but they were very hesitant at first. I feel for my poor IT guy who had to make sure everyone had monitors, laptops, etc along with login credentials.

Ah yes. I had my first Health and Safety Committee meeting and the Rep from the county (to the libraries) told us we didn't need hand sanitizer, that we could just use baby wipes.

We have a 2 weekend festival here in March that I just got the newspaper insert for this year. This year it’s 1 weekend and much of it is virtual this year. Last year we went to the parade the first weekend of March and we’re aware of what was happening in Italy but still seemed unknown. The world shutdown the week in between the events. I can’t believe we are a year later.

Oh man. Last January I started a part time job to help pay for school. In February, they offered me a full time position. I turned it down to remain focused on school. March everything shuts down. July my H loses his job. I don’t know if I’ll ever stop kicking myself for turning down that job. 😢

Sec Mayorkas is explaining why he couldn't repair and overhaul a completely gutted immigration system in one month.
Basically the Trump people removed the regulations, personnel, procedures and facilities they need to even follow the laws already on the books, while also making the humanitarian crisis in the northern triangle countries worse by stripping funding.

Whenever my memories from this time last year pop up I definitely feel...I don't know sad I guess. At how normal things were and oblivious of what was to come. It definitely makes me miss the smallest things we could do.
On this day last year we spent the day at the park and didn't have to worry about how many other people were around or masks or hand sanitizer.
I got my last pedicure March 11th while my mom took the kids to the movies. And then it was announced our schools were going to shut down for two weeks the next day.. Lol at two weeks. 😭

I met a friend for dinner on March 4th, but I went to Sephora because I needed new foundation. I was trying sample swatches on my wrist. I remember leaving and thinking, “maybe it wasn’t a good idea to try makeup samples that who knows how many people have touched...” No shit 😂 I can’t imagine ever doing that again.

I can't believe we're at the year mark. There's hope with the vaccines, obviously, but I still feel so angry at how this whole thing was handled by the previous administration.
And who knows? Maybe even with a competent administration in charge, we would still be in this mess because of various governors being complete tools (that whole thing about having peeing and non-peeing sections in pools), but that jackass certainly didn't help with his denials and lies.

This is close to how things went in my house, although by the time March rolled around he was fully on board believing a lockdown would happen. I think maybe that's why I struggled a lot last month. Even though our "real" anniversary doesn't hit until mid-March, I had been mentally trying to prepare for it since the last week in January 2020.

They are working on a virtual program for people in the 'remain in Mexcio' program to work with their phones.
Ok great but how many of those people have phones. Its not like they RV'd on up to the border.

if I heard him correctly he said they're doing small scale trial runs of a program that would allow migrants to request entry with a phone or app before illegally crossing the border

My cousin was in Italy the last week of February last year for a work trip. She took a few extra days and her BF (now fiance) went with her. She had to quarantine when she got back but it was all NBD to all of us. What a time to be alive.

Mayorkas reiterates that DHS is a pass through for unaccompanied minors and they are passed over to HHS as quickly as possible, with 72 hours being the maximum.
That 72 hours was "under stress" during the extreme weather in Texas.
Most minors are with HHS an average of 32 days.

Also, in a week, it will have been a year since I went to church in person. I've never in my life gone that long between stepping foot in a church building.

He's heading up the family reunification task force, working with FLOTUS and counsel, as well as NGOs in touch with governments and NGOs in the other countries. "We hope to be in a position to give them the election [whether to be reunited here or in their country of origin]" and, if they choose to stay here, will work with them to humanely and legally make that happen

Geoff Bennett asked about the handling of unaccompanied minors.
Mayorkas corrects him that the Biden admin is not, in fact, handling them the same way the Trump guys did. They are not expelling children or sending them into Mexico.
They are exploring ways to get a child to placement more quickly, perhaps putting HHS officials in border patrol stations/facilities to more quickly identify family they may have in the US or to assess their needs and find them a placement.

Geoff: Are yall going to prosecute Jeff Sessions for being a nasty little monster?
Mayorkas: we are focused on humane, restorative justice for these families and finding ways to ensure that this never happens again (so that's not a yes or a no)

Is DHS sending Covid tests for migrants?
Mayorkas: ICE does testing, and isolates and quarantines as appropriate. They were asking for a surge of tests because of the unexpected superspreader events caused by Texas having no power for a week.
