So I know I said the other day that I wish Biden hadn’t picked Tanden because it was going to be an uphill political battle. But I still have to say that Susan Collins’ statement on this is absolute garbage. This is the same woman who voted to place Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. A man who threw a literal temper tantrum in his nomination hearing. That’s the temperament we want on the Supreme Court? People are obviously entitled to their opinion about how Tanden comported herself online, but this is just a ridiculous double standard. Oh yeah, they are all hypocrits.

I wasn’t avidly rooting for Tanden before (like any more than any other nominee) but now I pretty fired up and want this out of spite.

Speaking of books. I just read My (Underground) American Dream by Julissa Arce and was excellent. It really makes it clear how fucked out immigration policies are. But does it by telling her story.

Which is kind of unsettling, to be honest, because I feel like so much of what the last administration did was done purely for spite, and yet here I am.

Add me to the list of those who read it in college. I forget the course - I think it was one of my required history classes for majors. The class basically taught us how to read books for thinking critically. It was probably one of the most useful courses I ever took. Critical thinking skills and how to read are the two most valuable things I took away from my English degree. This is why I get so annoyed at people saying English is an easy class or degree. Obviously not—look at QAnon folks. Some critical thinking skills would have come in handy there. And hello, I will be spamming the board after my absence. 😁

Biden is announcing changes to COVID funding for small businesses. Highlights how his admin retargeted funds to rural communities and mom and pop business since he took office.
There will now be a 14 day PPP application window for businesses and NGOs for loans for those with <20 employees
Removing student loan default and non-fraud criminal record barriers
Making it easier for 1 person businesses such as contractors, beauticians, etc, to secure loans.
Increasing oversight by State and Fed AGs

Now he's on to American Recovery Plan
Rhetorically asking what the fuck the GOP would cut and who they will sacrifice to get a lower bill

I know the is the first hearing but I love how Dick Durbin is running Senate Judiciary. Starting on time, taking breaks when he says they will, being supportive of Senators attending via Zoom, etc.

But anyway. Fuck Susan Collins.

Starting this week with a book recommendation... Things Fall Apart, written by Chinua Achebe This book is fantastic and heartbreaking. I had to read it in my AP English class and got into a fight with my classmates about how awful missionaries are. You can imagine how well that went over at my Catholic school.

Not because I went to Catholic school but because I went to public school in southern Baptistland. Had similar fights. Teachers loved me.

I read TFA in my AP english class senior year of high school and I remember really enjoying it. I should re-read it because I don't remember much other than I thought it was good. I've got like 100 pages left in the Obama memoir though.
Also can I say how annoyed I am that I have to wait for part 2? Lol. He better not GRRM the second half though.

willow I didn't realize there was going to be a second half. ETA: Not sure why I didn't. I thought this book would cover pretty much just his presidency. I was surprised to read so much background, though I enjoyed it. I'm only about halfway through, though.

enchanted The first book ends right after they kill Bin Laden (spoiler alert. lol.) so just spring 2011. He still has an entire second half of his presidency and the Trump era to cover lol.
