Heeeyyyy,
I’ve been absent awhile because of life stuff. But I recently started reading this book (The Writing Revolution) and it’s really changing the way I homeschool writing. I’m implementing it with my current unit study and I think it’s actually amazing. If you don’t know the methodology is that writing shouldn’t be it’s own subject. You should incorporate writing into the content you’re teaching. Also, you should start with the basics and make sure your kids can create great sentences before you ask them to make paragraphs. Anyway, this is brand new to me. Just bought the book and read the first few chapters. Thought I’d share for my fellow homeschoolers.

I’m going to have to check it out! Writing is definitely DS1’s weak area and even though I like Brave Writer I feel like we need something that’s a little more structured.

I’m going to have to check it out! Writing is definitely DS1’s weak area and even though I like Brave Writer I feel like we need something that’s a little more structured. I saw it on SEA I think. I was searching for writing because it’s also a struggle here. I like the exercises that she gives to expand sentences. It’s a little more parent intensive because if you’re doing it based on content that you’re studying then you have to make up the prompts. One of her big ones is the because-but-so prompt. So you would give them the stem: Harry Potter was famous for being the boy who lived. Then they finish with either because, but, or so. Example: Harry Potter was famous for being the boy who lived, because he was the only person to ever survive an attack by Voldemort. Harry Potter was famous for being the boy who lived, but he wasn’t aware because he was raised by the Dursleys. Harry Potter was famous for being the boy who lived, so he was instantly recognized when he attended Hogwarts. It’s easy to add the prompt to a journal and not so much extra work that it feels like a burden. Let me know if you want me to snap some pics from the book. I really like it so far.
