Hi, I haven't been around much but I know there's lots of knowledge here on CDing. I'm looking for something for DS, almost 3, 40lb, almost 40". He's been potty trained for months, but wears a pullup to bed. It's only wet once or twice a week and it seems so wasteful to be buying and throwing away dry pullups. Bedwetting seems to run in the family for boys so this may continue for several more years. So I'm looking for some sort of cloth diapers. All-in-ones? Will I still need to use inserts with those? Can I get anything that is actual pull-on like pull-ups instead of velcro or snaps? What are your recs? Any Etsy sellers that would sell something like this? I don't care about paying for popular CD brands lol but I'm willing to pay for something that works if I can stop buying pull-ups. I just want something as simple as possible and not break the bank.

We did part-time CDing, so I used what we had on hand for overnights for a while. We had some prefolds and covers. After a few accidents we went back to pull ups.
DS really didn't care about them being different than his underwear.

So disclaimer, my kiddo is 8. I’ve been out of the CD game for ... awhile. Our favs back then were Blueberry trainers like the this: www.amazon.com/Blueberry-Training-Pants-Bundle-Kitten/dp/B07H4YPWTTThey used to run small. So maybe ask on the CD board or check out some reviews to see if they still do. They also don’t hold a ton. So if you kid starts to go and then stops, these are perfect. A full morning pee will not be contained in these. I would recommend something like a trifolded XL prefold in a cover if your kiddo needs more absorbency. However, know that if you just throw CDs into your normal wash (and dryer) you’ll ruin the absorbency pretty quickly. (Most non CD specific detergent builds up and dryer sheets are definitely a no no.) So for a few wet trainers a week you might be creating a laundry nightmare for yourself. Prefolds are one of the most forgiving types of CDs from a laundry perspective. So you could get away with rinsing your two or three prefolds then adding them plus your covers to your towels for the week and using something like powdered tide to a hot wash followed by a cold rinse. Then dry w/out dryer sheets.

I loved SuperUndies for overnights after daytime potty training. They are a pull-up style. They have a super absorbent version but I found the regular version worked for us. YMMV.

We had the best success with wool covers for overnight. Sometimes over prefolds and then later just over underwear, to prevent any accidents from getting anything but the kid wet. What was the company that made those really nice wool covers, it's completely escaping me right now....? grumpycakes halp. ETA: Sloomb! These ones worked the best for us. And they are spendy so maybe if you are thinking you won't need them much longer it won't be worth it. We only had one. sloomb.com/collections/wool-shorts/products/knit-wool-covers

Can I put dryer balls in with towels? Maybe I need to make another thread, ha. I could easily hang dry inserts, but I also need different detergent? I like your idea of rinsing and washing with towels on hot.

Sorry I am very #new to this obviously lol.

alwayscheese, you could always wash on hot with your towels (use a small amount of detergent and/or an extra rinse to avoid buildup) and then air dry the pull-ups and dry your towels as usual.

I use some amazon brand liquid detergent and I try to always use the littlest amount, but I also dump in Purex and vinegar lol. Maybe I should just switch to powdered detergent for all my towels and skip the purex.

I like your idea of rinsing and washing with towels on hot. Your towels are totally fine to wash with normal detergent and dry with dryer sheets or dryer balls. Just not diapers. 🙂 As far as different detergent for CDs, you probably will for something like and all in one or a pocket. They just tend to be finicky about detergent and lose absorbency or get ammonia build up, and especially with hard water. Prefolds are more forgiving. I still wouldn’t use like pods or Gain. But people tend to have better luck with powdered tide or Persil.

Maybe I should just switch to powdered detergent for all my towels and skip the purex. You can try washing them in your regular laundry routine (maybe skip the additional Purex and vinegar just to minimize variables) and see what happens. If you start having problems with repelling liquid or rashes, you can always strip them (rinse in hot water multiple times) and tweak your routine. It’s only a couple pull-ups. No need to stress over them.

We just reused dry pull ups. 😬
*Unless his clothes were sweaty or he had skid marks. Il
Caveat also that I NEVER once had a PM cloth option that worked for my boy and I tried all options.
DD was full cloth until potty training (except for daycare 2x a week /trips), but for some reason, pm fire hose wiener could not be contained.
He is now 5 and still wets the bed 3/7 nights. We have two layers of washable pee pads and sheets. It’s easier to wash the wet pad and sheet and change jammies as cloth pull up options. (And way cheaper).

I have been thinking about the same as my 5 year old still wakes up with a full pull up every morning. And my 3 year old gives no fucks about potty training either. I bought a pair of superundies and I will see how they work for ds1.

Yes if you lanolize wool it is waterproof but it's breathable because natural, so it helps avoid diaper rash, and it's also just more comfortable to sleep in. I think!

The only cloth option that worked for my kids overnight were prefolds and wool covers. I’d bulk them up with flats for extra absorbency.

I tried this, it worked for my girl, but foe some reason my boy was/is a heavy wetter and no matter how well I treated them, it would run down his leg and out the wool. The wool would be dry, but the sheets would be wet. 🤦🏼♀️

We just reused dry pull ups. 😬 Oya same, not sure how flame worthy that was. But like how many times? Also i have like a 5% hope that wearing cloth will help train him.

Could you have him wear underwear with a pull-up on the outside? Keeps the pull-up clean if he stays dry. Has the feeling of cloth if he wets it.

Could you have him wear underwear with a pull-up on the outside? Keeps the pull-up clean if he stays dry. Has the feeling of cloth if he wets it. Ya that's another option. I'm buying cheap Aldi pullups and they get lumpy and weird after a couple wears so IDK if the underwear would extend the life of the pullups much, but it would do the fabric thing for him. I did that right at the beginning of potty training and he was wet about every night. So i gave up on the undies inside. Then he was always dry for a short time and now it's just random. So maybe i should try that again.

We used super undies for over night. We had to add an insert because DD leaked through them, but she was older and bigger when we used them.

If you are crafty and decent at sewing, you can make wool covers out of an old sweater - I did that when DS was young. You can find free patterns online.
The Sloomb covers are wonderful. We used the underwoolies with a fitted or over training underwear, and they worked fine for night once they were lanolized. You can occasionally find wool covers on Craigslist.
