I'm running for public office. My intelligence has never been more validated by those I have seen (and continue to see) these past few years. Reach out to Sarah Curmi with Emily's List. She's a fellow Michigander and lives in Ypsilanti. I'm sure she'd be able to help or lead you in the right direction. And this will get you started: www.emilyslist.org/run-to-win

I’m focusing on local issues/politics. My district is gerrymandered af, and our representation and voice is currently being stomped on by loud GOP Trumpers. So I want to help encourage massive voter turnout/registration, support my city council member’s opponent, and work to ensure our area homeless population is given help, respect, and dignity, which has been sorely lacking.

I think I am going to focus primarily on climate change + biodiversity (incidentally, I need everyone on the west coast to plant milkweed like right now because the Western Monarch population has completely collapsed and is on the verge of extinction). I also want to support organizations that fight to expand voting access and restore voting rights. Now is the time to lay groundwork to ensure we aren't having these fights a few months before elections are happening. Milkweed! I think common milkweed is most liked by the monarch. If you transplant from another location, it’ll look pretty dead the rest of the season, but it will come back the next year. I have spent the past few years slowly ripping out most of our landscaping. I finished completely clearing the side of the garage and plan to plant native plants for butterflies. I should start planning now for that and my garden. My parents gave me a cutting from their butterfly bush a couple years ago that I planted in an empty spot but sadly it didn't come back after the 2nd year.

Head pats and atta girls to start 🤣 I was considering state rep of my district. Our current is in her last term and she is so alarmingly toxic ( Ls2012 can cosign). I know I would have no chance because we are deep red and rural. I would be moderate (and frankly just sane). I'd have to learn to be less reactive. I would also have to run as my authentic self which could be problematic. 🤣

But I didn’t end up following through because I didn’t feel prepared. Buuuut, I learned a bit. I would say to reach out to your county’s Democratic Party and talk to them about your interest. It helps to have their backing. They can help you come up with fundraising ideas and people to tap. Also, find a rep (preferably a female democrat) and ask if you can sit down with them and talk about their experience. Harder in COVID times. But finding a mentor that can talk you through the ins and outs of campaigning is invaluable. I’m willing to help you in any way you need!

Ok so I was scrolling TikTok and landed on thebutterflyceo and this is exactly what she is doing! I had to come back and find this post to tell you so you could go look 😂❤️

I'm lucky that I made a job switch last year that allows me to address issues that are really important to me in my day job. But I'm trying to proactively support BIPOC women as political candidates outside of work too. So far this has been monetary support for local candidates but I'm looking to broaden my involvement moving forward to get more involved in campaigns or volunteering with non-profits that support these candidates. I also want to get involved locally. I live in a SOLID democrat stronghold so I'm not sure what exactly to do or focus on.

Aww, I am loving all the enthusiasm for biodiversity and butterflies! This is my wheelhouse. ☺️ Check out Xerces Society for more resources to help pollinators. California peeps looking to plant natives ( jaygee) check out your local chapter of the California Native Plant Society. The Bay Area, Sacramento Valley, and SoCal chapters are quite active and should have native plant sales coming up in spring. Feel free to message me if you need help finding anything. Also for anyone in the West, your local water district may have incentives to convert your landscaping to native plants because they are generally more drought tolerant. And! You can pressure your city or county officials to use native plants/milkweed when they are relandscaping public areas. This isn’t usually something that invites public comment so it’s good to be proactive and just start bugging people about it before the work is underway. I’ve recently started delving into the idea of intersectional environmentalism, which is more broad than environmental justice and something I’m working towards in the board I’m on. Check out the Dismantled podcast or just Google search that phrase for articles if you’re interested.

Bumping. GOP reps across the nation have introduced legislation to curtail voting rights, including restricting vote by mail, ID requirements, clamping down on voter registration efforts by NGOs, and purging voter rolls. Here's a general overview: www.cnn.com/2021/02/02/politics/voting-rights-state-legislation/index.htmlIf anyone has a good breakdown state-by-state on what's happening please share (I'll look later but I need to go get my kid). This is going to require some attention and action.

Check if you have a local SURJ Chapter in your area. It’s a good way to connect with like minded activists and engage in direct action. I’m attending our monthly community meeting right now (on zoom) and it’s really informative.
