My office is doing the same. Not that a lot of people are allowed in the office ATM, but it's closed for the like less than 30 that are allowed (spread over multiple floors in the building and there are strict protocols). I think this is becoming standard for DC offices- at least everyone I've talked to! The building where I work (when there isn't a pandemic) is basically now off limits to anyone who isn't security.

I'm not actually worried about anything happening here in my dead suburb, but it's just frustrating at the lack of awareness from county leadership. Like, if the message is only for people at the administrative centers, then say that or don't include staff who don't work in those buildings.

I haven't heard anything concrete about what IL is doing at our capitol buildings. But Pritzker did send 200 of the IL National Guard to help in DC. At minimum state capitols should be empty. Protecting the building is one thing, protecting inhabitants is another. Governors and family should probably be in secure, undisclosed locations too, where possible.

The NM governor just declared a SoE because of the ongoing threat of riots and violence, starting Jan 16th.
SUPER.

I can't decide if these extremists are going to go local given the presence in DC or if they think the military is secretly on their side and will join the fight or if they'll just plot for later when the heat is off.
I hate that we're all living in this perpetual state of worry and horror.

I think cuomo mobilized some of the national guard to head to DC. The capital has barriers. Streets are blocked off. Most of us have either taken off or reworked our schedules to avoid be in the buildings next week. Albany city has asked counterprotestors to stay home and residents to avoid the area

Well my city has set up an emergency text alert sign up specifically for inauguration. If that says how this is going.
ETA apparently it’s run by DC, but they are encouraging sign up. Didn’t know DC was doing this but DH was like old news 🤷♀️

I teach for a large online university and had a student tell me he has been activated by the national guard to go to DC for 10 days. I'm not sure what state he resides in but I'm glad they are being proactive.

I haven't seen any rumblings of counter protesting. Before the vote certification there was some back and forth but the consensus was "lolno" to going to DC.
I don't follow super closely so I could easily miss something, plus local areas are their own fun. But I don't think there's any big plans for protesting these people.

NPR was saying as of early afternoon that they still hadn't decided whether to completely close the Mall to the public on Wednesday but the Washington Post said this morning that it would be closed.
I can not imagine allowing protests that day. Just, no.

There were protestors last week at the state Capitol and it ended up being evacuated if I remember correctly. Both my FIL and BIL work for the state in SF and their state buildings are closed all next week. I am a little nervous because there have definitely been a lot more loud Trump supporters this year. Last week after Biden's votes were certified my mom said there was a parade of cars driving by her apartment honking and waiving their Trump flags. Eta: I totally missed that you were talking about counterprotests. 🤦♀️

Those Trump trains are...something. before the election i ended up driving up a main road here with one, and I couldn't figure out why it was so slow. Turns out, three cars with BLM, Biden/Harris, and rainbow flags and signs were at the front going 20mph. I loved them so much. But that line of Trump turds was lloonngg. Ugh.

I just read an article on CNN with an interview with one of the cops. He was tasered multiple times in the neck and then as he was on the ground they started stripping stuff off of him. Extra ammo.... his badge.... basically whatever they could get. Then he heard them start yelling for someone to kill him with his own gun. OMG. I know they were there to go hunting and I have said that since when the news of the breach first broke but reading those words just gutted me. They also interviewed the guy that was pinned behind the door. www.cnn.com/2021/01/14/politics/police-officers-capitol-riot-hodges-fanone/index.html

The use of "trump supporters" and "protesters" really eats at me because it makes them sound so human. These people are terrorists. I'm going to push back on this language, so here's my solo in the choir: Dehumanizing language is a first step towards violence. You can trace its use in political movements easily, but it starts with making another group of people less human by the language that is used to describe them. In current events, the collective use of "illegals" is dehumanizing, along with all the obvious insults that have been hurled at immigrants. Racist coded language is also dehumanizing. It's obvious that it's wrong in these examples because we here disagree with and reject that language and labels, and what it represents. Simple insults can be a first step, which is why I try very hard to not use them (no more "orange one," no more "turtle.") I am not perfect. I also get angry. It's easy to do and may even feel good in the moment. Are they terrorists? I believe so. Is "terrorist" currently a dehumanizing term in America? That is likely up for debate, but since it has become nearly synonymous with those who carried out 9/11 and the organizations from which they came, I am hesitant to use it. I don't want to go down the road of dehumanization of people, especially a group of people, I disagree with - yes, even when I vehemently and completely reject their beliefs and condemn their actions. When I can, I describe their actions as terrorist, rather than the people themselves, or use "domestic terrorist" to help literally bring it home to me and whoever I'm speaking with that these people are here and ours to deal with. Soft language is not helpful either and I don't think we have to handle them with kid gloves or make excuses. There is accuracy and tough language, without dehumanizing. The truth is we all most likely live near or are related to people who, for whatever reason, sympathize with the people who physically carried out the terrorist acts, or who at the very least believe in Trump's repugnant messaging. These people ARE human. It's harder, and better, to keep them as such in your mind and in the general discourse.

I guess when I said that terms like rioters and protesters sounded too human I was meaning more of it was too soft. It was too normal sounding. I don't feel like I can fully describe my thoughts on it. I'm not trying to dehumanize them but I don't want to treat them with kid gloves either.
