tgrimes the center he's at used to have a solution (they had a 4+ 1/2 day program, so he could have done that in the morning then joined the regular day care class in the afternoon. But with Covid, they shut that down. Not sure if it would be an option next year. As to once he starts school, I don't think he's gifted per se, honestly, I think he's just exactly on track academically for a kid his age. So I don't think that would be a viable option. Also, I think the public school's program starts in 3rd grade. Could you call them to see if they'll offer it again in the fall? They don't know - everything is being played by ear right now. They are a large chain and seem to not have that much control over a lot of what they offer. I think it all depends on the numbers in our area, vaccinations, etc. I had his telehealth appt yesterday to get referral for possible interventions for him. I have a few calls out and hopefully I'm able to find someone to work with him which will help give me some clarity as to his readiness. Unfortunately the first person I talked to is only doing virtual sessions now and I think it would be tough to really get to know a kid virtually without some existing relationship

jewels,Is there tk in your area at a private school? Or a day care that offers k? That way you could decide the year after if you want him to repeat K with a different group of kids or move on to first watch the kids in your home district? ETA: I should have read it before I posted. Sounds like it will depend on what’s happening with Covid in terms of a daycare driven kindergarten class. I will tell you that Josie did start kindergarten much more advanced than her peers. They do not have a gifted and talented program but the school is small enough that they were able to work with her to find solutions to challenge her. She visited a second grade class three or four times a week (depending on the schedule) for reading and math. The same kind of solution might be available to you once you get to know the classroom set up.

jewels, good luck with whatever you decide. Those decisions are so challenging. FTR, I've known of several kids who were taking their dear sweet time with potty training (not motivated, didn't respond much to their parent's efforts), but school did it for them really quick. Once they were in that environment they suddenly got on it.

I really want to crawl back in bed for 2 extra hours of sleep. I don't have an office here so I'm in the break room. I'm using my main job laptop because the laptop for my job here doesn't work so I don't have access to a lot of spreadsheets I need.
I need to just focus on getting things squared away for my promotion packet but I'm struggling.

Totally random, but what chores do you have your kids doing these days? If you have chores for your younger kids, please list those with their ages, too. I need to update mine. For L we have a chart that includes bringing down his water cup every morning, setting the table, cleaning up toys, putting away school stuff and piano practice. Other things he now does automatically is make his bed and clear his dishes. Nothing for A yet but we'll ask her to help clean up and most of the time she complies 🙃 Thank you.

FFFC (maybe a UO), but I don’t have chores for the kids, so I’m interested in reading through the responses in this thread.

tgrimes We usually have the girls fold their own laundry. They can be turds about it though so sometimes we fold it and they put it away. When I'm cleaning I often ask me to help and give them a task. They love to dust or do anything that involves a spray bottle. Mostly I just want them to be better about cleaning up after themselves and keeping their rooms clean. They are responsible for picking up their floors and starting the robo vac in their rooms. Their messiness drives me crazy.

I ask because you may find the structure of a school day to be more beneficial to him. Of course, it could be the opposite, but I would start him in K and see if it helps him to mature a little.

FFFC (maybe a UO), but I don’t have chores for the kids, so I’m interested in reading through the responses in this thread. This is us. They don’t have ‘real’ chores. Outside putting away their own toys after being played with, help put away stuff when asked, will set and clear the table, open the curtains in the morning etc. Nothing structural though. Eta oh and like you, dd matches socks en sorts underwear when doing laundry.

lahdeedah it is pretty structured - there's a lot of play based learning but it's structured if that makes sense. Some of the issues he has are with the transitions - like if he's playing in the kitchen and having fun he doesn't want to stop to work on his art project. Then he finally gets into the art project and it's time to go to outside play, well now he's having fun with the art project and doesn't want to stop. Rinse and repeat throughout the day. inthekitty re: the potty training - he is def the only one in his class that has accidents like this and he just doesn't care. He still often goes in a corner to poop like a typical toddler. None of the other kids do anything like that. So I don't feel like K would have any different effect.

tgrimes I don’t have him do anything consistently except put his shoes away, but it’s probably past time that I make the things he does do consistent. M brings the trash/recycle bins in from the road, puts his dishes in the sink when he’s done, occasionally helps to pair and fold socks and washcloths, puts laundry in the wash/dryer, takes it out (M2 loves to help do this, too), both boys like to spray and wipe down (mostly dusting or the kitchen table) I let M2 practice with just water in a water bottle. I’ll give M the Pledge multisurface when dusting, but still have to go behind him for a quick wipe. The hey both love to vacuum and do a decent enough job. What I want M to start doing is helping to put the dishes in the dishwasher away.

I just ask for help if I need it while I’m doing things.

I just made tasks sticks for Cadence yesterday. They are popsicle sticks with chores on them and how many minutes of tablet time each task is worth. Clean bedroom, clean playroom, wipe bathroom mirrors, sweep or vac bathroom floors, sweep or vac kitchen floor, feed animals, get ready in the morning (teeth, hair, clothes) She is also apparently excited to scoop the cat boxes. Mh finally realized he was the only one doing it so he wants us to start taking turns. 🙄

We don’t have chores but he has to do certain things like clean his room before games on weekends or the basement play space if we are planning a movie night. No shoes are allowed I the house and I try to get him to put his own dishes and trash away but I am super ocd and grab stuff quickly so i forget to make him.

I somehow missed it about this job lahdeedah. Where is it? What will he be doing? Congratulations!! I think I mentioned it last week sometime. Recruiter for a training position wants to move forward with his hire. He is in the top 5 for a similar position with a preferred contractor, but it’s not a sure in like this one. Same base. He was initially told end of month would be a start date, but now it’s mid Feb, so that gives us more time. There is still some rumblings for him in the college world, but after these last few months of BS offers, I’m ready to move on so we have stability moving forward.

Got emails from both of the girls' teachers yesterday about their homework. Cass has been submitting blank documents so it looks like it's complete when I check. Maddie has been giving 1-2 word responses to writing assignments that should be detailed. So much fun! I hope they can go back to in-person in the spring and finish up the last quarter in school if the teachers get a chance to get vaccinated. Otherwise I don't want to see the teachers being put at risk. Holy hell to over 4k Rona deaths in a day.

So cute wedding! Marty is rocking that look. He is growing to become quite the handsome young gentleman. Eevee may have understandably been crabby. *ba-dum-tiss*
