The Queen has cancelled all garden parties at Buckingham Palace and in Edinburgh for 2021 in the light of the new lockdowns announced yesterday. It was proving hard to plan them with deadlines fast approaching. Contractors have been informed. I feel like covid is paving the way for her to step down. She’s turning 95 and it sort of makes sense so that by the time normal events return it would be a new chapter. Now, the question is will she pass over Charles for Will? Pretty sure she can't decide anyway, I think it is determined by Parliament, and not just the UK parliament but the commonwealth parliaments as well.

She’s not going to pass over Charles for Will. And legally she can't. The line of succession is written by law. If she abdicates, it goes to Charles. There's no legal way for her to skip Charles without him having been disqualified in some way beforehand. Interesting! I did not know that. Maybe Charles wants to be king. I know he’s been waiting around his entire life. But if it were me, I would be happy to skip it at this point. He seems happy with Camilla and his chickens.

That's why her decision to change from male inheritance to gender neutral inheritance had to be approved by every country in the Commonwealth. I think it's like 53 countries or something like that.

She'll never step down. She will die before she abdicates. ^^^^^This. She grew up dealing with the aftermath of her uncle's abdication. I'm pretty sure it's been ingrained in her that abdication is a dereliction of duty and disrespectful to the monarchy. She's in it for the long haul.

I don’t see her retiring necessarily, but I could see health becoming an issue and forcing the issue.

I think she’ll just share more and more duties with Charles and the other working royals. She won’t step down.

Maybe HE'LL abdicate basically immediately. That would be amazing.

There’s no “issue to force” re: abdication, unless the Royal physician plans to help her out a la that dude before that George who was cousins with the Kaiser and the Czar. I was imagining her in a situation where her mind starts going but physically she’s fine. I can’t see her continuing her public position if she is losing that aspect.

I'm not sure they'd force her to abdicate. With Crazy King George III, he was still King when the Prince George became the Regent. At the time, they felt that the King wasn't mentally stable to rule. Dude "ruled" as Regent for 9 years!!! So may not make her step down but give power to Prince Charles. And we'll go back to Regency clothing! 😉

She did that 21st birthday speech and promised to devote her whole life, long or short, to the monarchy.
She might outlive Charles for spite.

She’s living out of spite for her uncle’s abdication. You don’t want this? Fine. I’ll be Queen forever. Fuck you Uncle Nazi Lover. Anyway, that’s the Queen in my head.

So which poster is going to get a bunch of these new coins to mail to the rest of us as a keepsake? I hope 2021 behaves since our plan is to head to Scotland and England in June/July. Will pick up a few of these, hopefully. Putting in my order now. DD2 has a project next year in social studies that involves showing different types of money throughout the world, no reason not to collect something I want, right?

If the old girl wanted to retire, she wouldn’t wait until 95 to do it. this. She will just give the working Royals more to do but keep the title. Best of both worlds really

I like Letizia's outfit other than the mask. I'm glad she's wearing one but I would like to see something more "Mathilde mask-like."

Mathilde's masks are not as effective as the one Letizia is wearing. She always wears surgical masks or N95's which I think is good to keep attention focused on ways to stay safe, instead of ways to stay fashion. In my opinion. 100% agree. I love seeing royals in legit masks. I feel like it’s their way of making a statement about the seriousness of covid. Not sure if it’s as politicized in other countries as it is in the US but I like to think it’s their way of making a statement.

There's no debate that N95s are the most effective when worn properly. We could certainly make the case that someone of high importance should be adequately protected. Conversely we could argue that because she is not a medical professional she should not wear one. Wearing any mask is a good example. Several studies have shown that a 2-3 layer fabric/fashion mask provides good particle containment and low levels of transmission when worn properly so I don't think Mathilde's masks are merely just for show. Most of us only have access to fabric masks so by seeing Royals wear the same type of masks as us perhaps gives a sense that we are #all in this together.

This isn't the case in Spain, almost everyone uses the surgical type masks as they've been provided for free by some local governments and all over Spain their price is guaranteed to cost no more than 0.96 Euros.

That poncho is fabulous. I would wear it and twirl around all over Spain.

Yeah, I don't believe that rumour. I don't think there will be international travel and certainly not until wide-spread vaccination is implemented.

Also if anyone would like to emulate Letizia in a KN95, I will share my source via PM.
