Turns out it was a two book kind of day. Just read the graphic novel adaptation of Kindred by Octavia Butler. It was phenomenal. You all must read it. Oh wow. I loved kindred so much. Will have to check this out.

I’m listening to The Ten Thousand Doors of January, which I grabbed at random from the library. I am absolutely loving it so far, it’s a mix of The Secret Garden and modern magic realism. It’s making my heart happy. I'm glad you like it! It was a two star for me. I kept waiting for the magic to happen but I felt like everything was told to me instead of showed. I was legit angry because I felt like the idea had so much potential. Ten thousand doors and different worlds and I get to experience basically none of them😂. But I know so many loved it! Oh no!! I am only about 30% through it, so I still have time to go. I was feeling similarly about The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, that it had so much potential it just didn’t live up to and only scratched the surface of the aspects that touched me (the world travel). I will be curious to see how the rest of this goes then. Because I’m excited right now...

I set my goal yesterday. I chose 80. I hit 113 last year, but I know the pandemic provided me the space to make that happen.
In the vein of being hopeful, I lowered my goal, imagining that life will return to some version of normalcy and I won’t have the same time to read/listen.

I'm reading the book Tightrope. It's really good but also depressing.

I set my 2020 goal at 30 books and read 50 thanks to extra time at home last year. I kept my goal at 30 for 2021. I started Obama's book in mid December and finished it last night so I already have one for the year but it feels like cheating! Today I'm going to start Presiding Bishop Curry's new book, Love is the Way.

I’m about a quarter through my first BOTM purchase and ugh.... I’m not loving it.
This Close to Okay.
I just finished Maybe You Should Talk to Someone which was wonderful, so the similar theme isn’t helping. But omg the suspension of disbelief is too much, and it was immediate too. I like the writing, but geez, I can’t get into it because I am so busy thinking YEAH RIGHT the entire time.

Y’all inspired me to check and I read 71 books in 2020. A lot of that was rereads but I’m still counting them. 😀 For those doing the book riot challenge, this is probably a dumb question, but what is a SFF anthology? And has anyone picked a book for the first challenge? I’m trying to think of a book I’ve been intimidated to read and I’m coming up empty. For me, intimidation often equals length, because I feel like I’m not getting to read as many new things and like I’m missing out on more good stories. One that I’m intimidated to read based on length is 11/22/63 by Stephen King. I had a friend that said she was putting it off for exactly that same reason (length) but she loved it. It has great reviews, too. But maybe length is a category by itself in that challenge? I haven’t looked at it.

It’s a science fiction/fantasy book that is composed of short stories or novellas by many authors. I know they put out some yearly ones but there are tons of choices. Honestly, if you have a favorite SFF author, they probably have some work in an anthology. Especially urban fantasy/paranormal romance authors tend to publish A LOT of shorter stories in anthologies. If you have trouble finding one, you could give me an author and I could see if I could find any. Also, rereads 100% count!

I read so much this year and, even if we get back to normal in the spring, I will probably read more than normal, just based on the months we are still isolating. But I set my goal at 50 again as a sign of positivity!

Or maybe a classic that you’ve always wanted to read, but always put off or a book that you feel has an important message but could be uncomfortable? Those are other things that I would consider intimidating for me.

But I was intimidated by the length at first too.

I hated The Wife Upstairs, a lot of people are saying In a Holidaze wasn’t for them. We should have all gotten The Office of Historical Corrections! Hopefully our January books will be better!

You don't have to do the challenges in order, I always pick whatever most appeals to me at the moment. And SFF= science fiction/fantasy 😊 Here's a post with some suggestions: bookriot.com/read-harder-2021-an-sff-anthology-edited-by-a-person-of-color/

I set my goal for 24 books. I checked out a Kristen Hannah book bc those are pretty light reads, placed The Lake House on hold again. I started that in the hospital but I didn’t manage to finish the last sixty pages before I was discharged (it belonged to the hospital) a couple years ago. And Prairie Fires which I also didn’t finish before my loan ended.

I started The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah yesterday and am halfway through today. (I didn't like any of the December BOTM pics so I chose that one as a member fave.) I'm setting my goal for 50 this year!
I bought The House in the Cerulean Sea yesterday so I'm excited for that one after I finish The Great Alone.

So I just learned about the term deckled edges earlier today - I had no idea that was a thing, and I hate them!! Apparently I’m more in the minority than anything, but it seems many many people love deckled edges! I borrowed Betty from my library last month and I was so annoyed because that’s how the pages were. I actually thought the book was damaged/put together poorly.
I am new to this group as of November maybe, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was already discussed here before but I’m wondering if I’m the only person that had no idea deckled pages are a thing, not a mistake, and that many book lovers LOVE getting a book with deckled pages.

I mostly prefer straight edges but for some reason don’t mind deckled if I’m reading historical fiction. I’m a complicated soul.

Insert that dozens of us gif here 😂 I started retreading them in late 2018 and finished the newest one last week. I like Sandra Brown’s romantic thrillers too. I find them similar to In Death (without the futuristic part).

My goal is 100, I read 76 this year and most were from March on so I think I can do it.
Started The Wrong Family by Tarryn Fisher, so far so good.

junch817, deckled edges are annoying. I also don't like soft touch covers. Mh designs book covers and apparently soft touch is all the rage with authors right now.
