So my H went to have dinner with his parents, his sister and her boyfriend over the Fourth of July weekend.
He said the boyfriend said something that was...something. The boyfriend is a dark skinned Mexican. He basically overstayed his visit here in the US and works at the restaurant now. He's normally a cool dude, from the times I've interacted with him.
Anyway, my H said the boyfriend basically said over dinner that he doesn't like dating dark skinned girls from Mexico or anywhere else. He said he specifically wanted to date sil because she is white. He also said his mom was happy because "he's advancing the race". (Fucking eyeroll) So my H was like "wut? You don't think that's problematic?" So boyfriend told him it's easy for my H to say that because he is married to a light skinned Mexican (me). It was a weird exchange to say the least. But I hear stuff like that all the time. I wish he would have said that in front of me. I don't know if he's just saying that to fit in with white people or if he actually believes that. Maybe both.

This is pretty common in my culture. To get with lighter skinned folks to whiten the lineage. I know it's common everywhere else. But this was an example of it in the Latin community.
Like there are zero novelas with dark skin woman or men protagonists. It bugs me because it's my guilty pleasure and hardly any diversity. ETA: deleted repetitive stuff from previous post.

Me too! She's my fave. ¡Azúcar! I could listen to nothing but Celia and Hector Lavoe for the rest of my life and be happy.

I'm only about eight episodes in though but so far it's pretty good. My Spanish is awful so I have to watch with the subtitles on which is impossible when my kids are running around so my viewing time is limited.

I didn't have much to say in the first thread because I'm so many ways I'm still finding my voice. I'm glad you brought this up. I tend to struggle so much in the opposite direction with finding my voice as a black person. Like I still feel like if having a "black card" was a thing I'd still be "proving" that I'd belong.
I mentioned my coworker who has said multiple times that I'm one of the whitest black girls she knows. This is something I've heard since maybe beginning in middle school and from both black and white kids. It really is something I wish I had talked to my mom about or had more of a voice about but I just chose to suffer. It still affects me now- I really identified with the journalist character on the Dear White People Netflix series. Like, that character felt like the story of my life and now it's killing me that I can't remember his name.
