I think there was a reason for changing Marina's character and I didn't hate her. I'm guessing she will still suffer the same fate eventually as the original character in the books though. I think the show is setting us up for actual growth in characters whose books are to come like Penelope which will end up making the show more interesting in future seasons but can be frustrating now. That’s what I think too. Also I feel like quite a bit of time passes throughout the series so I feel like they may have changed some things to try to “tighten” things up a bit

MH and I just finished the show yesterday and I had thoughts. TW and spoilers if a man ejaculated in a woman while she was saying “wait” and was clearly as concerned as Simon was, people would be shouting rape/assault. It isn’t okay and she was quite clearly and knowingly forcing it. The look on her face was calculating and quite frankly disgusting. I hated her the whole rest of the show. Yes he took advantage of her lack of knowledge probably, and some of her informed constent was gone too. She had a right to be upset that he misled her. But and big but... she made out with him in the garden. Forced him to marry her, knew ahead of time that they wouldn’t have kids but then she assulted him. Man I hated her for that. And the show centers her and her anger over being misled instead of his feelings as well. Clearly I am angry about this. I never read the books. I'll sit on your bench.

I just binged the whole season and my gosh. I was not expecting the intensity of the sex scenes, so there's that. But Simon certainly is not difficult to look at.
I haven't read the books; I didn't know they existed until I started the series.
Re: Daphne and forcing ejaculation. I see what others are saying here... But she was also lied to. Lied to and also clueless when it came to sex and babies. You see her being willing to marry Simon even though she knew (thought) he couldn't have kids, and maybe not even really have sex.
Daphne took control and exposed his lie. The show didn't depict him as being drunk, so in that moment he certainly could have moved her.
I was very much not expecting the Whistledown reveal.

wildflower I agree that the possible rape situation is a little less black and white than by today's standards.

I only have the last book to go, and I've enjoyed them, but I honestly think what they did with the show really improved The Duke and I. I'm really looking forward to how they adapt the other books. I also have a lot of other thoughts on the men in particular in this series based on the books (especially the men that aren't Bridgertons) and it's not great. I think the show will improve them.

Soo.. am I the only one who found Simon/Daphne mismatched? He is smoldering sex on a stick and she looked like a little girl. Which I'm sure plays true to the books, but I just couldn't get past it and didn't find their scenes sexy because of it. 🤣🤷♀️

Just lust. I did find Daphne kind of annoying. Which annoyed me lol. Because in the books she was very likable. She also realized she loved Simon a lot earlier than was presented in the series.

I don’t know old Daphne is supposed to be, but if it’s true to the time period she probably would have been pretty young.

Daphne is pretty young. Like 17.
Colin is older than she is, which blew my mind because he seems like a kid.

I guess it's fairly accurate to how things were, but girls were "old maids" if they didn't marry when they were practically babies, but everyone kept talking about how Colin was too young to marry.

It’s pretty common in Regency novels for the girls to be 17-20 and the guys to be 28-35. There’s almost always an age difference.
What really threw me off is that Hyacinth looks older than Gregory, but she’s she youngest. Then I thought about my younger cousins and it’s accurate. The girl is a year younger but has looked older between the ages of 10 until he hit puberty.

The actress that plays Eloise is in her 30s. Same for Penelope. It's such a mishmash.

Simon is the same age as Anthony who is 8 years older than Daphne in the books. His age is never explicitly said though. Daphne is 21 in the book.

Here’s the family tree from the front of the second book. The Duke and I (and season 1 of Bridgerton) took place in 1813. Daphne 21, Simon 29, Violet 47

jaidit thanks! I’ll look more closely. I’m also trying to find some alone time to watch this with my kids home. Definitely not kid appropriate! MH walked in when Spoiler The Duke was kneeling between her legs on the stairs. Lol. “WHAT are you WATCHING?!” (Then he sat down to watch with me 😂) Lol, I told dh it was basically soft core and he looked over at that scene and was like whoa you weren’t kidding. Then got sad that i finished the season already since it definitely put sex on my mind!

I’ve not read the books but really enjoyed the show. The end of the season surprised me and almost seemed rushed. Showing who was Whistledown and then cutting to the birth just seemed disjointed to me.

Hi! I just finished this last night. MH guessed Whistledown early and darn it, he was right. I really enjoyed it for the most part, a bit cheesy but it had all of the elements that I enjoy in a cheesy romantic type show. Marina was such a hot mess. I'm hoping Penelope becomes more likeable because I was not a fan.
The first book has a long wait list from my library but the second is available on audiobook. I'm debating starting with it first...

I saw him loosen up and just be friends with her, which he never did with anyone else. You even see glimpses of that after they are married, and fighting, but then there's a comment and he just smiles and chuckles. His explanation about their friendship to the queen really summed it up for me... he found a friend, then realized he loved her. I think he also didn't LET himself realize his love because he was so determined to never marry.

Was Francesca away at school or something? She was visiting relatives in Bath, is what I recall Lady Bridgerton saying. She's basically missing from the entire series, until her own book.

I saw her on that family tree and was trying to figure out which one she was. She's the one that pops in for a scene or 2, right?
