I binged in 3 days and got my whole French family addicted. Simon is very, very attractive. I love the cinematography, I found myself looking up manors in England for sale last night 😂 Half the time during all the steamy scenes I was all “ooooo look at that fancy wall paper! What gorgeous architecture! Oh yes, Simon’s ass too!”

. For those that have read the books: is it worth reading them after watching the series? Is the show staying true to them or are there more details and side stories in the books?[/quote] I think the books are definitely worth reading. So far the humor from the books seems to be missing somewhat. Lady whistledown is not mean spirited in the books, especially towards the bridgertons. They have changed daphne’s personality. So far, the names are mostly the same and they’ve expanded lady danbury’s character (which I’m enjoying!), but Anthony is not coming across well. I’m only two episodes in though. ETA to tag Lakes

I binged the whole thing over the past 3 nights and even got my husband who doesn’t usually watch any sort of period dramas or historical shows hooked. He was disappointed there wasn’t a Season 2.
Everyone else has mentioned the good parts, Simons ass, the fashion, the design and architecture. The acting was quite good too, I enjoyed how they worked out Simon and Daphnes issues. It’s always gives me pause to reflect on my own situation, that almost all women before and some now don’t have power over themselves to make their own choices.

I didn’t read the first book before watching the show, but I just finished the second book in the series and it was an easy transition, and quite enjoyable! I really like how JQ has added mew characters to keep things fresh- a layer on top of the strong Bridgerton family story line.

I keep thinking about how great it was to watch a historical drama that had a diverse cast. I love that they made a conscious decision to include POC in a non race tensed way, if that makes sense. Right now, Jodie Smith is filming a UK drama and playing Anne Boleyn. I can’t wait. This needs to be happening way more.

The queen is only mentioned in the books for the girls presentation. But I am enjoying the character of the queen in the series. I don’t feel like Anthony or Violet (bridgerton mom) are represented accurately so far. I’m loving the casting and minimal changes with Eloise and Penelope though. And I love the diversity of the actors. It would be great to see some Asian actors as well.

I feel like the diversity has been the much needed missing element from period pieces. Shonda made it look effortless, which is exactly what it should have been all along.

You didn’t care about historical accuracy when it was a novel.

Spoiler and heavy topic? So interestingly enough, the non consent ejaculation bothered me immensely in the show. Enough that I do not want to rewatch that scene a second time. When I first saw it I kinda said.... ok Daphne doesn't know, and she was still learning, so she was testing the waters.... but nah. She knew, she was plotting before the bedroom. It's a way uncomfortable topic. It is making some headlines comparing to rape, but that I disagree with. The sex was obviously with both parties consent. But the attempt to impregnate was not. I have some mixed feels about it - and book readers - I hear the book is worse? It is more of a drugged/drunk situation?

Yes. In the book, they fight and he goes off and gets drunk and then comes back and that's when she does that. I'm guessing the screenwriters were looking for less spousal rape, so they changed it a bit, but still very cringy.

I'm guessing the screenwriters were looking for less spousal rape, so they changed it a bit, but still very cringy. I read an article with the excerpts from the book and the internal monologue coming from him was that he could stop it but did not... so I feel less weary about that. However it seems he only arrived there because he was drunk (in the books).
I was kind of shocked he didn't just... move her off of him. He is twice her size. But then that really makes me feel like I am victim blaming and I don't like that feeling... {Spoiler} especially because he vowed to not return to their marriage bed... so he could not trust her. But then she could not trust him....
It's def a conversation piece and some articles are saying it is almost good that it is getting the conversation out there. I did not look at daphne the same again after that.

Spoiler and heavy topic? I was waiting for someone to bring up this topic. I hadn’t read the books before watching. But I did see an article about this scene and how people were outraged. So when the scene happened I really paid attention. I feel like it is such a grey area. Clearly throughout most of the sex, it was consensual, but like someone mentioned, he didn’t want to ejaculate inside her. I agree with whoever said they both didn’t trust each other after this for different reasons. I thought it would be hard for them to be together after.
