Hope y'all don't mind me popping in. I need a hobby.
I've always been interested in weaving and have been poking around different websites and etsy for beginner kits and information. Does anyone here weave? If so, can you tell me how you got into it? What you love about it? And perhaps point me in the direction of some good resources? I'm thinking of starting with a basic lap loom just to make sure that this interest stays strong once I start, before I drop a ton of cash.
Thank you!

Beyond the potholder kit I had when I was a kid, I have not tried weaving. I have contemplated getting like a small lap sized loom to learn with the kids. I think it looks like a lot of fun and I think my kids would enjoy it as well. starbuck- tagging just in case you're like me and forget to check back on the post you made. 🤣

I think we were just giving them to everyone at one point. were they all neon? That's what mine were. Like a ton of bright neon loopers put together with no discernable pattern. Hopefully my adult attempts will be better? Lol I saw some really neat woven potholders where like, they were mostly cream with a little rainbow of colors woven in. So colorful but still understated.

Hi! I have a degree in fiber arts and we did a very small lesson on weaving in college and I really enjoyed it. That was a little over 10 years ago though, so I’ve forgotten most of what we learned. I recently bought just a small lap loom on Amazon to ease my way back into it. I wanted to have a project to do while watching tv in the evenings. I looked on YouTube to find videos on how to get started. I’ve also seen books on Amazon about weaving that I may look into after the holidays.

I'm going to get a few from the library. That's so fascinating. What got you interested in fiber arts and weaving? I got myself a small loom kit of Etsy and some preserved flowers to work into the weave. Waiting v impatiently to get them.

I’ve been sewing since I was a kid. I grew up with my grandma doing a lot of sewing and embroidery and I took knitting classes with my mom as a kid. I have a BA degree in Art, but had to choose a concentration (art medium) to study and focus on. When that time came, I gravitated toward fiber art. We focused a lot on fabric printing and dying and sewing techniques. Weaving was my favorite lesson though. I just found sitting in front of the loom very relaxing.

That's really cool that you've been so steeped in art since childhood. Relaxing is part of my goal, too.
I'd like to do I have some ideas for tapestries like, a waterfall weaving using some wool roving to give the look of action where the water hits at the bottom. Maybe eventually weaving a series of national park scenes. Hopefully eventually my skill will match my ambition? lol

Your degree sounds super interesting!

Your degree sounds super interesting! 😆 a lot of fabric printing/dying and free-motion sewing. We didn’t design or make any garments. Mainly all quilts and wall-hangings. Some people did some 3D things. I do want to take a class in the future on garment pattern making. I sew clothes now using other people’s patterns and I do a lot of alterations, but I’d like to eventually make my own patterns.

I hesitate with altering existing patterns. I've gotten comfortable with adding length (since everyone drafts for 5'5" it seems and I'm 5'8") but some of the changes some of these people make absolutely blow my mind.

I am bored tonight and reading old boards. starbuck, did your pandemic weaving take off? My sister started weaving a few years ago and now owns like 10 looms and has a weaving business and teaches it (along with knitting).
