TW - family illness
I delivered just before 9am Saturday. Just before 2am Sunday I got a call that my little brother (25yo) had been in a motorcycle accident and was in ICU. The doctors and nurses were extremely understanding and after making sure that all was well with me and baby, they discharged us around 10:30 Sunday night.
Without going into too many needless details, he's in ICU in stable condition, but he's in a coma and has brain bleeds and brain damage.
Physically, he's otherwise okay and for that I could not be more thankful. He broke his left arm, but the doctors performed surgery yesterday to repair that. He has zero issues with his cervical spine so the neck collar was removed. Both of these things are huge positives in my mind, because doctors wouldn't perform surgery on his arm if they didn't think he had some chance of recovery.
Each day he's starting to exhibit more responses and reflexes. Today, he turned toward our mom and the nurse as they called his name.
It's been an emotional four days, ups and downs, guilt for being happy and guilt for being sad, searching for positives and trying to remain realistic.
If you believe, I would appreciate any prayers, thoughts, vibes, well wishes, or other that you can muster for our family.
Oh gosh I am so sorry to hear about your brother. I will send all the positive thoughts and vibes to you, him, and your family. Congratulations on baby! I can only the emotions of all of it. Hang in there ♥️

Yesterday and today I've gotten packages delivered to "Supermomma" Jennifer. Yesterday was Boobie Bars, today is a fleece blanket. There is no insert or note saying who it's from or why I'm getting it. Is anyone else getting random packages? I thought maybe through the What to Expect app, but there's not even promo material.

And thank you everyone for the well wishes for my brother. He's doing good and we're getting lots of positive updates. He's been weaned off of sedation meds and IV pain meds. He's responsive to touch, pain, sounds, and starting today commands. So he's in a much better place than we could have imagined a week ago. Hopefully he'll get stepped down from ICU towards rehab in the coming weeks.

DH is out of town this week. I did okay until left night when Hattie screamed for 5 hours straight. This 3 kids thing is no joke.
I also realized today I'm exactly halfway through my maternity leave.

I'm so sorry. Three kids is fucking hard. I have days where I want to just grab my keys and drive off alone and leave my wild heathens to duke it out. I'm also half way through my maternity leave. I'm wondering how much I should cry when I have a telehealth follow up with my OB in two weeks to get a longer leave. H was potentially exposed to covid at work and it's freaking me out about going back to work myself since I teach middle school and usually have about 250 students as a specials teacher.

Is your school back full time in person? My school is hybrid, but as the School Counselor I'll still go in every room so that would be about 400 kids and all the teachers I'll have exposure to. I'm a little less worried since it's Elementary which seems to have less spread than MS/HS kids. Also DH is in Mexico for his trip (Hyundai plant), so I'll worry and we'll distance ourselves for a few weeks when he gets back.

So I'll have less kids this year I think. I mean, I should, but I don't know how all kids will get the class otherwise. I don't know. I'm scared to see what kind of shit show I'm going to walk back into. Apparently specials teachers are traveling this year to help with social distancing too,so I'll be in like every single room. I'm in NY and we have some of the lowest transmission numbers in the country right now. My county is seeing an uptick though so it's making me nervous.

Or hopefully don't go back for you. 🤞 I don't have a choice. This district sucks for maternity leave. I didn't have enough sick days, so my leave is already costing me $9k of my salary. We can't afford anymore.

NY has paid family leave, but teachers don't qualify 🙄 My first paid me in full the full 8 weeks (csection) then paid me in full for four more weeks I got written out for. Second I was only paid out my PTO, which I had 5.5 weeks off. My principal gifted me enough days to give me six full weeks pay then sick bank gave me six more days. I took about three unpaid weeks and only stayed out ten weeks. This time I was paid out all my PTO. I get 50% pay as long as I'm out for medical reasons. That's a break even number for us since we don't need daycare with me home, so we could afford it as long as we want.

Maternity leave in this country in general just sucks.

But I'm grateful for it otherwise I'd be back to work this week. The only perk of the pandemic is that I only ever used a half day for a prenatal appointment. After that I was working from home and just scheduled my work and appointments around each other and never put in for time off, so I kept all my PTO through the spring.

I just have PTO, luckily my boss is not a stickler about putting time in every single time I had to be off for an appointment considering I had twice a week appts for most of my pregnancy so I had enough to cover my full 11 weeks. I'm also on the Nov 30th train!

+1 to 11/30 return. I get 6wks paid FMLA and then I’m rolling 2 weeks vacation from fiscal 2020 to make it 8. I’ll still WFH for at least a month but with 2 I’ll still send J to daycare. I’ll still get my 3 wks vacation for fiscal 2021 though which helps.
H on the other hand can take 16 weeks at 100% pay but is only taking 3 🙄🙄. His coworker is due in November though so he wants to get back before she goes out since there are only 3 people that do his job and they shut him down 100% from work.

He still has to use 8 vacation days though so we might keep J home some of those. He can always take the other 13 weeks within a year, but according to him he can’t do the mr mom thing. He has been getting up with B every day and getting him breakfast so I can “sleep” though and rough housing with B more so he sleeps better and gets attention.

I went and got my hair cut this morning. My split ends and varying lengths due to all the pregnancy/postpartum shedding cycles needed to be taken care of ASAP. I had them take 6-8” off, so it’s a bit to get used to, but it feels lighter, fuller, and should be lower maintenance now, which is a huge plus having 4 kids at home. I'm going to get mine cut as soon as the big she'd starts 😬 Haven't had my hair cut since before the pandemic started.
