Plantation is in the name of the state or am I misunderstanding? Technically RI is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. But no one ever uses it and it's ridiculous it's lasted this long. I never knew this

I think in an extremely competitive housing market, with a limited income, and a good 30% (I’m guessing) of the Charleston area in a neighborhood with “plantation” in the name, it would give me pause, but I can’t say with 100% certainty that I wouldn’t do it. It’s kind of like renaming the master bedroom. That’s fine, but the issue in real estate isn’t the name master bedroom. I never realized this.

I would probably avoid it, although in PA there are no plantation names I can think of. Would probably also try and avoid anything using a generic "indian-" name.
There was an interesting episode of the Sporkful podcast about foods and recipes with the Plantation in their names and why White people like to use that term.

Also, Souplantation was called Sweet Tomatoes around here (and I think most places east of the Mississippi River). It went out of business permanently during COVID and I was v v sad. I loved Sweet Tomatoes and their salad bar and pizza. I grew up eating at Souplantation in southern california and the plantation reference definitely did not land the same way there, or at least didn't back in the 90's. But that was back before I knew better. I was so sad to hear they closed.

So I had to look it up because I couldn’t remember which areas had Souplantation and which ones had sweet tomatoes but I think Souplantation was used in pretty much just southern CA. We had sweet tomatoes in Northern CA but I went to Souplantation in southern CA when traveling for work and knew they were the same. It started in southern CA so I guess as they expanded they used sweet tomatoes. Why they didn’t rebrand entirely is odd.

Ah, we had Sweet Tomatoes in Fl and I think in OH where I lived.
I remember it was passable for a quick lunch.

Did they combine the words in an attempt at a portmanteau or to distract from something they knew was problematic?

Did they combine the words in an attempt at a portmanteau or to distract from something they knew was problematic? Souplantation? I think they just thought it was clever. The chain was founded in the 70's. They added the name Sweet tomatoes when they started to expand because it more encompassed the salad part, but never changed the original Souplantation location names.

I'm just wondering what the clever assumption was. Like, a nod to Supplementation? Bc you can add more vis a vis a salad bar? I'm just trying to get how a dude in Cali came to having plantation in the name, and why it's one word. I'm overthinking, huh?

I’m assuming souplantation was suppose to be a play on soup and plants for salad stuff - because that’s all that place was. I think they’ve been close now, Not sure. But it was all you can eat soup and salad bar of sorts. How did the name make it past these people without anyone going “wait guys!”

I would guess it was a dude coming up with ideas for a soup and salad restaurant and he was like, "Soup garden! nope. Soup greenhouse! Nope. Soup Farm! Nope. Soup Plantation! Souplantation!" It has a decent flow to it. Californians know what plantations are from tv and movies and books, and probably associate it less with slavery than the South does because it's geographically removed.

This thread has had me thinking for the past day. In my immediate hood, the neighborhoods aren't subdivisions and aren't really named. A bit OTP like where my cousin lives, there are huge subdivisions that have the names. I don't even know if, prior to this thread, I would have even thought about the name of the neighborhood and if it would deter house buying. Based on the standard process of looking at houses online and searching via parameters like price and school district, I feel like I would be deep into the interest cycle before I realized that something was in a neighborhood with Plantation in the name. I always notice when the subdivisions have Plantation in the name and it makes me super queasy. I think being a Northerner makes it stand out more for me. There is an “Old Plantation Rd in the city that I pass daily and it also makes me uncomfortable.

There was a salad place in my college town called Super Salad. We went there a lot and one day suggested to the owner that it should be called Soup Or Salad and they should expand their offerings to include soup. We were probably high but I think we half expected the guy to be so wow’d by our suggestion that he would cut us in as partners. He instead looked at us like we had 3 eyeballs and said “no, we just sell salads”. He closed shop like 6 months later and I really think he missed out on an excellent opportunity.

Then you have the, “we can’t get rid of it because then we won’t be the smallest state with the longest name!!!!!!” No one cares about that. And it’s a bad name. How about we ditch Providence Plantations and add in required curriculum about Rhode Island’s extremely significant involvement in the slave trade?

I’m a Midwesterner now on the East Coast and I don’t think I would have thought much about a neighborhood name. They really aren’t super prevalent where I am and plantation definitely isn’t common around either place. I’m also not someone who thinks too deeply into names. I wouldn’t let it stop me from buying my dream house but I also would support other neighbors in wanting to change the name to something different.

I literally drove pass real plantations to and from college for years. To and from work. Not one but two I belive. The worst to me was the weddings again like it was this chill place as place.
All the blood, sweat, and tears shed there and it's now the back drop to your wedding entrance.
