chrisy01 will they even let you return until you can confirm you received negative results? I hope it's just molars!

Also, the town next to us (literally 1 mile from my house) has one new case in the school and they’ve closed for the next two days at least. The Facebook parent groups are blowing up like you wouldn’t believe. Are people upset that they're closing, or that there's a case?

The schools policies don’t actual state if a sibling has a fever just if someone tests positive. I talked with the principal and she will have the teacher have L distance learn until we know. There is already a kid who is distance learning in the class so it didn’t sound like a big deal. As soon as I wrote the question I was working with the school to set it up. I guess I’m helping write the steps on what to do in this case. 🤷♀️

Are people upset that they're closing, or that there's a case? Closing bc they’ve only been open a day. Ah. I was thinking y'all had been in session longer. Yes, it does seem a bit overkill, imo. Our district created an online dashboard with info...so far we have 12 cases out of 40,000+ students. Word on the street is that these are at the high school level vs. elementary/middle. So far they are contact-tracing and quarantining those who have been in close proximity, and they report those #s as well. But no closures or anything. eta: the district north of us is more urban--100K+ students--and has had 30 cases. They went back not quite a month ago. I feel like that's pretty good but what do i know, lol.

Curious: for those of you with kids doing distance learning, are you watching the lessons with your kids?

flamingo, Other towns in the area have shut down just the school that had the student that was infected, and I think there’s one town nearby that is not shutting down at all even though they have someone affiliated with the school who tested positive. There isn’t any consistency with it so who even knows how the three districts we span in our family would handle it.

guster I was in the same room as her yesterday morning, but not afternoon since I had to work. Mh is technically in the same room as her since she's in the living room and he's still at my kitchen table 😒 We aren't actively watching with her though. If she has questions we're within earshot to help. Well, he is, I'm at work. I did see some parents sitting in yesterday, but figured it was because it was the first day.

Curious: for those of you with kids doing distance learning, are you watching the lessons with your kids? I’m listening from the kitchen table but not right next to her to see the video/lesson. She’s finally gotten the hang of unmuting/muting and raising her hand on Microsoft teams. I’m the one having to scan/upload her assignments so I need to know what to do.

If a school has to shut down for one positive case then I think they have a very poor reopening plan. Unless we had multiple classes having outbreaks or huge community spread, our school wouldn’t need to close. I would be pretty annoyed. How will that possibly work going forward?

That’s what I was thinking. I would be super annoyed if my kid’s whole school shut down for just one positive. The way the school here is doing it is they are sending a letter to everyone in the building that there has been a positive case, and then anyone in direct contact with that person will get an additional letter and a call from the DOH for contact tracing. I assume that entire class would have to quarantine but I’m not certain. Today was day 7 of school and so far I haven’t heard of any positives in her school or district.

Our school was very specific in telling us that they are not making quarantine decisions. Anytime there is a contact with a positive person or a positive in one of the schools, our county board of health is brought in and they do all the contact tracing and make decisions about who has to quarantine. I bet they said "we are not quarantining your child, they are" 35 times lol.

They told us that the board of health said if everyone in the class is wearing masks, in the event of a positive test, no one would have to quarantine. To me that seems unlikely.

Both Dh and I had a positive case at our middle/high school. They informed all parties that had close/closer contact, but school are still open. Dh also had a close colleague that tested positive, luckily he hadn’t seen him that week (coincidence), again school remains open. Dutch cdc/school itself will notify all parties that have to quarantine and if at all possible will be thought online.
Our elementary school informed us that if one of the teachers would come up positive that that will have to close the school for a quarantine periode, because small school (7 classes total, about 160 kids) small team, they cannot really avoid contact between staff. Fingers crossed that won’t happen.
ETA both these things are adding to my worries. I swapped things around in my office, so there’s now 2m between myself and students. And dh made adjustments to his classroom again too.

I just cried for like an hour. 3 hours and 36 minutes into T’s google meet, we quit. If school can’t open, I really may need to just pull him and homeschool at night on my own. It’s awful. My heart broke reading this, I’m so sorry. Mine was too. Seriously I just cannot phantom this. I just want to yell at whoever thought this was a solid idea!

I don’t know about these particulars districts in my surrounding towns, but MH’s school and Josie’s school said they do not have a one-sized-fits-all answer if there is a positive case within the district. They have to confer with the medical team they are working with, the doh, etc. It was a questions that came up and again in the zooms.

I have been next to Josie bc I am finding that when the teacher is talking specifically to Josie they are also sometimes adding in something for me (usually addressing me by name). I think it might be bc this is all new.

For J's class she will say your grown ups or tell kids to ask us for things. I'm not listening all the time though, so fairly certain in missing a lot. This is hard.

I think it might be bc this is all new. I have not heard C's teacher address any parents and haven't heard any parents speak. I find if I'm in the same room as him he gets more fidgety and wants to talk to me a lot. I've been staying on the same floor of the house as him and listening while occasionally looking in to make sure he's doing what he should be. I'm unsure how this will go next week when I have A and L at home (they went to my in-laws the first two days so we could settle in).

Once he got the hang of muting/unmuting, I had to stay close but not *right with him*

I’m sure your all’s schools are the same : B’s class only mingles w each other. They don’t interact with any other classes (ie, no recess w other 1st graders, no lunch in the cafeteria w everyone, they don’t go to other class rooms for specials). All this is in effort to stop spread so if there were a case —knock on all the wood — it would not affect the entire school.

Curious: for those of you with kids doing distance learning, are you watching the lessons with your kids? Nope. Not even possible with work and 2 kids doing DL, but even if it were I still wouldn't. I'll be nearby when I can and pop-in to make sure they are able to navigate the tech. Yesterday MH supervised when M had her independent work breaks to ensure she could do her online assignments and turn them in. But for the most part I want to treat this as much like I would regular school. That might change as the weeks go on if they get more bored/distracted, and need me to be on them, but for now this works.

I'm not the least bit surprised about the whole school shutting down, but it definitely indicates poor planning. Obviously the kids weren't just interacting with their classroom. But what can we expect with pisspoor leadership and guidance. I work at a hospital and they forced me back in June and just about 2 weeks ago sent out a policy about handling positive COVID cases. This is an effing federal hospital and they didn't get that shit figured out during the 2 month work-from-home period. Obviously there should have been a clear policy before arbitrarily bringing people back into the office but here we are.

All the 1st graders can mingle, but only that grade. They do go to a different room for specials, but do both art and music in the same room. Only their grade level is in the cafeteria and on the playground at the same time.
