So.
This is a documentary about a water park in NJ in the late 70s to mid 80s.
It’s new and I think just came out recently. I want to talk about it but don’t want spoilers. One this that was fucking bananas was early on Trump got a chance to come see it and a chance to invest and be thought it too crazy and idea. Even for him. And the narrator was like damn can you believe it?!
So that’s when I knew it would be bonkers.
If anyone saw it or wants to see it and chat I’m game.
I think it was about an hour and 20 min. HBO

I need to watch this. My husband was just telling me about when he went as a kid. He was let on a ride that he was too small for. He fell and had to be rescued by a lifeguard. His parents and brother also got injuries that day 😳

DS’ dad went as a kid, multiple times I think. I heard many stories about it. I’m gonna ask if he’s watched.

I'm mostly a lurker who stuck to my BMB. But yes, this documentary is very good and very true. My whole family grew up going to Action Park - my dad/aunts/uncles, and my sister (although not the crazy stuff for her!) I was a little young at the time. Luckily no one in my family was ever seriously injured but they all have great memories of the madness.

I felt nauseous just looking at that cannonball loop. My husband said he never went on that one. He said he got hurt on the Tarzan swing. He was too little to reach the swing and fell into the water. I can’t remember the name of what his brother got hurt on, but the back of it was too low and he got hit in the back of the head. So much wtf throughout. It was so unreal, it felt like we were watching a mockumentary.

It was like yeah cool I grew up in the city in the 80s so I know a lot of messed up shit went on with less supervision than we maybe should have had, but that was beyond anything remotely ok. And the parents knew too which is the part that I was like jfc. The descriptions of like each and every thing was so awful and scary I could hardly believe it.

I know this wasn’t the worst thing they talked about but I can’t get over people getting lacerations from other people’s knocked out teeth. 🤢 I don’t understand why people would want to keep going back there.

yellowwallpaper the scene they found tons of teeth in that nook in the ride. 🤢 how did parents not realize their kids teeth were gone? Some looked like molars and stuff argh. At first I thought the guy with the glasses being interviewed from waist up was going to be missing a leg or something but luckily I was wrong. I’d have ptsd I think. Jeez.

Is this the same documentary that was going around a few years ago or a new one? I remember going there as a young teen and just saying no those rides are crazy, I’ll hang out in the wave pool. Later I learned that was where many of the deaths took place and Felt quite odd my parents didn’t mention that.

I know I watched something on it a few years back as well.

There was a short doc in 2013 called The Most Insane Amusement Park Ever, I think where some of the video of Andrew Mulvihill came from. Johnny Knoxville alsp made a movie called Action Point in 2018 based on the park.

So, I have an Amazon Fire TV. Amazon and HBO Max do not have a deal so I can’t download the app.
BUT!
I googled a hack and it worked!
Class Action Park is now on my screen.

Okay, that was wild.
I was born in 1980 and knew no one who went to Action Park despite being in South Jersey. My parents would have said hard no to that place, though. 🤣
It was an odd mix of nostalgia for my childhood, NJ and sheer terror. I do wish they had laid out reported injuries at other parks per day with Action Park. Also, what kind of staff were at other parks during this time. I would just like some compare/contrast with other contemporary amusement parks.
That woman in the blue/white striped shirt was ..off. I laughed out loud at the clips of “if you worked in the race section, you didn’t know anyone or were lame” and they cut to her saying “I was in speed boats!”

MH and I were absolutely cracking up! Also the teeth man. That’s so disgusting. Just one look at that water slide and I thought that’s not how physics works, how are people surviving this? It’s not like they were in a track. So crazy.

I haven't seen the documentary but Andy Mulvihill wrote a book that came out earlier this summer about the park. It's a good read.

I haven't seen the documentary but Andy Mulvihill wrote a book that came out earlier this summer about the park. It's a good read. [br He comes across as a douche in the documentary but I’ve heard the book is fair and balanced. True? I haven't seen the movie but have seen interviews with him leading up to publishing the book. The book is split with the idea that the construction of the park was flimsy and his father's ideas were nuts but also that patrons behaviors played a role in a lot of the craziness. The section of the book when he discusses the wave pool was my favorite part of the book. The father refusing any suggestions to make it safer, people not knowing how to swim jumping in from all directions, the psychological toll the responsibility to keep swimmers safe took on the teenaged lifeguards. It did a good job of showcasing all sides. That being said, I don't know I'd say the book is fully fair and balanced as a whole. The story of the park is also the story of his family and his formative years. So it is understandibly touched by a lot of nostalgia. I want to see the documentary because I imagine the true story lies between the two.
