I've really liked New Zeland's response to Covid so far, but they just delayed national elections by a month and I am very Like they have 12 cases in one city. You can mask up and socially distance and make it happen. It may be a little hypocritical because I didn't mind when GA pushed the primary, but the primary felt a little different. It wasn't going to delay change of power. And I am just bracing myself for 45 trying to do the same here soooo...

I felt the same about NZ’s election delay. I do not like the precedent it sets.

NZ is a completely different beast. I am not concerned in the slightest. They've taken this seriously from the beginning. The opposition party is on board. They are not us. They do not have the shit storm that is....well, American politics.
If Donald Trump tries to delay the election, he made up his mind on that a loooooooooooooooong time ago.

I dont know that I have an opinion on NZ elections. I can see where she is coming from and if the opposing party and masses are in agreement for the safety of their nation...
Also NZ politics are very different from US politics.

Like NZ's intentions from the beginning have been to protect their people. To treat this as it is, a public health crisis.
As a whole, we have not. They are legitimately just trying to keep people safe. They pushed it back 4 weeks.
I just think it is apples and oranges.

ladybrienne, you and I know that, but now DT has ammunition to say that other countries are doing it. Sure, he wanted this outcome all along, but we could say it was a hairbrained idea and never going to happen. Now... and his followers will think it's because he's trying to do the right thing. WHICH HE IS NOT.

I am sitting here viewing this through the lens of being an American in the midst of a profound leadership crisis.

WHICH HE IS NOT. He's had his ammunition since he won though when he said millions of illegal immigrants voted. Which, we know is not true. It doesn't stop his followers, Russian bots, even the most moderate Republicans in Congress from following him. The truth doesn't matter anymore. NZ and what they do does not concern me. We live in a country where truth doesn't matter. We are already in the shit. Deep. We have been. He's already tweeted about delaying the election. He's actively trying to defund the Post Office. He's admitted he is going to vote by mail, but he's against the rest of us doing it because fRAUd.

I agree ladybrienne. It does not matter if he has actual ammunition or not. He just creates lies if he doesn't have the facts that fit his narrative. Also while I can understand people not liking moving votes because that seems icky to democracy- every country is different. I mean how often and when elections are held is completely different. If their country agrees on moving it it's fine. This isn't a country with questionable democratic principles. In Portugal when we declared a state of emergency that actually meant that the government had permission to basically do ANYTHING to control the pandemic and we as citizens abrogated a number of rights during that time. Elections would have been included in that. But it is taken seriously, and was agreed upon by our government and elected officials for a period of time. Like culturally every democratic country is going to be different.

I don't know how NZ elections work, but here in Canada elections don't occur at set intervals, the party in power calls for them within an excepted window of time. It just really, really wouldn't matter delaying it a month, and I would support it as a citizen of a country that operated under that more flexible system. The US is a very, very specific set up.

Still no Julian Castro on the speaker list that I've seen. I’m really sick of the DNC ignoring Texas. It would serve them well to pour money, time, and lift up Texas Democratic voices right now. Texas has been trying to turn blue for a while. Not to mention ignoring Latinx voices.

Does delaying the election actually delay the transfer of power though? Genuinely asking.
Like if our *election* was delayed, Constitutional transfer of power still happens on 20 January.
(I am not condoning the delay of any election and was actually really not cool with delaying primaries)

It would cut down on transition time but I can't imagine Team Biden is going to get much valuable insight from an outgoing Trump regime anyways.

The current transition length was determined in the 1930's when everything took longer. Now you can accomplish a lot of the necessary business with a phone call.

I appreciate all the insights on how NZ's process differs and why the delay is not necessarily a crisis like it would be here.
