Kida, I'm working on making something similar to your calendar thing. I'm not so sure how great it will look. I may end up splurging and buying some stuff to throw it together better.

To the OGs, will I ever feel less like I'm just winging this shit? Today worked out well but it felt very seat of my pants despite planning out what we would do today. Maybe it will just take a bit to get in the rhythm of it all?

I just used clip art on word and made the numbers and days on excel. Printed it, used tape to laminate, then cut it. It was easy, thank God lol. I think they have some that you can buy pretty cheap tho.

I love the YouTube video game workout! We've been doing a lot of GoNoodle and Cosmic Kids, but I like having something else to mix in.
We officially started today. We are using Time4Learning, so DS is doing the four core subjects online and I am adding art in each day. I'm thinking of enrolling him in online piano lessons, but those will have to be done separately, since we are doing "school" while he is at work with me.
It went well today. Since he works best with a routine, I printed out a schedule (even laminated it, lol), and he did a great job of using it as a guide. I am hoping that he continues to like this program.
Here he is this morning:

The first year, we had a math curriculum and everything else was whatever because the oldest could already read and particularly enjoys encyclopedias. The second year we added Story of the World and a phonics book for the second kid. This year I added Sassafrass Zoology for the older two to do together, and a handwriting book for the second. The toddler has basically learned all the preschool things from being handed a tablet with khan kids so he'll leave us alone sometimes. Colors, letters, letter sounds, numbers, shapes. I blinked and he knows them. Kids learn stuff, they're wired for it. You'll be fine.

We’re doing distance learning through her school, and it starts tomorrow! Yikes. I do not feel ready. Yesterday we picked up her books and her Cromebook, and we met with her teachers on zoom. We also picked up her school supplies. Her table is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so I’ll get that put together and we’ll start organizing her work area (part of the dining room).

I sent an email to the principal and assistant principal letting them know we are homeschooling. I’m close with them and everyone else in the building so I wanted to let them know personally what was going on. I subbed there a few times a week over the past three years and taught at the after school program four days a week, so they are all my family. I haven’t heard back from the principal but the assistant principal emailed me back already this morning and made me cry, she was very sweet.
I’m finishing organizing today and the kids need to do their online orientation. I have some STEM cards I found at Walmart with some fun activities for the kids and DS wants to do a bunch of activities from his science experiment books. I really think this is going to be a great year!

What phonics did you use?

My 8 year old really enjoyed having the logbook ready and writing down the information as it came up in the story. He also drew pictures as I read. I used Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading. I don't read the script, just explain in my own words. I have a boogie board that I use to write the words and sentences out instead of having him try to read out of the book. But I got tired of it about half way through and we also read Bob Books.

Maybe it will just take a bit to get in the rhythm of it all? Something that helps me is to write down what we did afterward. At the time it never feels like much but then if I go back and look at a week or a month’s worth of notes, I usually feel like we accomplished a lot. Or I can look and see that we did tons of history and were weak on science or whatever. It makes things feel more cohesive to me. Last year, I kept a scatterbook (I think this is in the Brave Learner) where I took weekly notes including the highlights of each subject, what the kids got well and what we needed to redo, books we read, trips or experiments we did, and anything else I wanted to keep in mind. That worked well and helped me see the rhythm of everything we were doing.

Right now I am keeping all of their work because I have to put together a portfolio at the end of the year to have an assessment done to be submitted to the school district next year. But I think the scatterbook will be nice too.

It’s nice for things that don’t really have a record, like this week we’ve been watching documentaries and reading books about weather and the ocean and having a lot of big talks. Since we don’t have a physical record of all that, I write it down. Sometimes we’ll take a photo and stick that in too.

Like they wanted to do journals (R did them last year in 1pst with a weekly prompt) so I figured in addition to writing the prompt in their notebooks, I would keep track of them in my binder too. Same with spelling lists and books read.

Yesterday we did b and 2. DD can count great and recognize both as well as do a great job writing upper and lower case b but she needs to work on writing the number 2.
This first month is just to review the letters and numbers 1-10 so I can see where she needs the most work and use that going forward.
Today is c and 3

Back in March, someone on GD had recommended Super Teacher Worksheets (website, $25/year) to find spelling lists. I looked at them last night and I like them! I figured for $25 for the year it was worth it. They have other worksheets too like reading comprehension, math, science, grammar, etc. It seems like a pretty cool website. I also stumbled across classroomdoodles.com that I found some neat coloring pages. I printed off one for history and one for science (says History and Science with doodles around them) for the boys to color and put in the front of their binder. I printed some off for me too to color and put in my binder for the subject dividers because I'm weird like that.

Our district doesn’t start until September 8, but I think we might start slow at the end of August just to get back into a routine.
I’m trying to be a minimalist and not prep too much. When I prepare a bunch of stuff it always means my kid will definitely not want to do it. I have bought and printed a curriculum and ordered a lot of books that should be here by Friday. We’re just going to be using the kitchen table most of the time so I got one of those raskog carts from ikea to put all of our school stuff on. I think that’s all. I’m getting excited to start!

Hi! I didn't know this board existed but I might live here now. I'm slowly poking my head about above water. We're homeschooling for preK this year, and we're using Busy Toddler's Playing Preschool curriculum. I love it so far.

We’re starting homeschool August 17th so no schooling here today. But I do have everything all neatly planned and my homeschool room set up and all books/curriculum set to go. I can’t wait. Kida you should try GoNoodle and Cosmic Kids Yoga if your kid is liking movement. You could even stream it from your phone to your tv. GoNoodle has its own app and the yoga is free on YouTube. My kids like Banana Banana Meatball on GoNoodle. I'm going to check out these GoNoodle recs! M has so much energy. SO MUCH. He asked to do 15 minutes of Cosmic Kids Yoga before bed tonight.

We’ve landed here as well. I have twin boys who will be starting K this year and a 3 year old who will tag along. I am a preschool teacher so I kind of know what to expect, I’m excited to get started! We will focus our homeschool efforts on a ton of outdoor learning, reading and writing practice. I’ll sprinkle in some math and science, sensory bins and art projects. Let’s goooo!

Hey all!
DD starts on-line learning on September 8th. It was supposed to be next week but got pushed back 3 weeks to give teachers more time to prepare. However, I think DD and I will start next week. We will circle back to 3rd grade curriculum and go over the things she should have learned last year that she didn't (decimals, equivalent fractions, spelling, cursive, etc). I have all the books and a half way plan. I figure this will be a good trial run. If it goes well and DD is able to learn from me I will consider pulling her and doing straight homeschool for 4th grade. If not we will muddle through the 8 hours of a day of computer learning the district provides.

Also, hi.
We're continuing the online option from the school for the first semester. So I'll be in this until at least mid-January.
School doesn't start until 9/8 though, thank goodness.
