Our school system has been operating on a split schedule. Today, they announced we will go back 5 days a week on 9/14. All kids. They admit there will be no way to socially distance. Three teachers were sent home today. One is confirmed positive. One is symptomatic and one is in isolation due to exposure. Our state has had 9,000 cases in the last seven days. I am beside myself. Such a crappy situation. No virtual option for your district? We have two positive teachers and 16 quarantined for exposure in our first three days. 1,000ish new cases a day in the state. It's a dumpster fire, and I never want to leave my house (unless it's to go to another state. Or country). There is a virtual option for students, but not for me. I asked to be the virtual teacher and my principal never even wrote me back. DD has one functioning kidney and high blood pressure. She also has raging ADHD. We, and her doctors, felt good about her going 2 days a week, masked, and spread out. I don’t know what to do now. If they ease the mask mandate, I don’t even know.

I just want to scream from a rooftop "THIS ALL SUCKS!" I can't imagine how hard teachers must have it. And then throw in at risk loved ones? It's an impossible situation. There's no mask mandate here, if that makes you feel better. Or something. I hate the regional divide in all of this. We need a national leader with a little fucking backbone, please.

3rd grade DS missed part of his spelling test and it was because he couldn’t hear the word the teacher said because of her mask. He said they aren’t allowed to ask for a repeat or raise their hands during the test. I’m very WTF to this carried over pre-covid19 rule. I’m not saying anything to her, but I want to.
PreK DS has a school issued tablet, it doesn’t have a strong enough connection for virtual meetings. So that is neat. The speech teacher today was trying to explain to me how to connect it to my WiFi, I found it very presumptive as this is why the district purchased tablets with internet connections for every student. This is the 3rd week of school, we just got ours Friday. I asked my neighbor about their connection, she has had to take her daughters to work with her (1st and 7th) so they could connect to the school WiFi, instead of leaving them home with her roommate. Allegedly, TMobile is looking into strengthening their signal over our fairly large metro area.
Basically, things are going 2020 standard over here.

That sucks that your principal didn’t even respond. It seems like there are a lot of people in similar situations - either themselves or their children. I hate that there isn’t a bigger answer and it has become such a political game. I’m sorry.

In fact, kids in general who are getting judged on their spelling skills based on how well they hear and pay attention. WTF to this rule.

The teacher had the same rule...no repeat of spelling words. The amount of anxiety I had about those tests was ridiculous. I was so worried I wouldn’t hear one of the words... or take too long to write on and miss the next one. I can’t believe it’s still a think and now with masks even 🤨 not being able to ask for them to repeat it

Shouldn’t the word be said multiple times so the kids can think through how to spell it? It's a spelling test, not an instant recall test. Ridiculous, and needlessly mean too.

I'd be on that school like sticky glue if it were me about that spelling test.
I have some auditory processing issues and not only is auditory learning difficult for me but when you add in masks where I can't read lips I cannot understand people.
Nope, nope I'd be full mama bear in this scenario.

Versus just wrote memorization? I mean, at the spelling bee they say the words over and over to think through them. If it’s good enough for the spelling bee, it should be good enough for elementary school! Yeah i was thinking the national spelling bee repeats it and uses it in a sentence.

I'm having oral spelling test flashbacks. I'm a horrendous speller. Having to stand there and publicly get it wrong feels like the genesis of my social anxiety tbh.
Only to live in a world now where I don't need to know how to spell anything, so joke's on you Mrs. Bowls, you absolute witch.

Nope, nope I'd be full mama bear in this scenario. Same here. I have to ask people to repeat things frequently. It’s not that I’m not listening or paying attention. It’s just how my brain works I guess. Also, what's the lesson? If you don't catch something the first time, don't ask questions and go forward ignorant rather than be imperfect for a second? Woof.

As a teacher myself I once emailed my son's teacher asking about learning objectives and how developmentally appropriate a rule might be.
If it were me I would contact the teacher.

I have not kept reading but say something to her. My kids schools have said emphatically that there will be learning curves on all things because of covid. I would push back on this! Be nice, but bring it to her attention and is she does not agree, escalate.
The kids have masks and barriers at their desks, maybe verbal tests need to be rethought.
ETA: or don't be nice cause that rule is fucked.

Oh. I see it has been covered. LOL.
We are only a few days back into school. So far, so good. Kids are happy and masks and barriers and protocols are abundant.
The HUGE county next to us with a higher infection rate has been back for a few weeks, and last reported only 4 positive cases, two teachers and two students. They are opening up testing to all students in the coming weeks so we will see that spike, but I am glad testing will be abundant.

I was in Publix today and a woman was wearing a mask that said, “my other mask is a gun” while pushing her two little kids around and pulling her mask down under her nose whenever possible and I just.... Oh my. She sounds fun!

So I was at Target the other day and someone walked in without a mask and when the target employee asked him about it, he said he wasn't legally allowed to cover his face because he was carrying a firearm... I was really taken aback. Like, can you carry a gun into target?? Is it true you can't cover your face while carrying a gun?? I know this stuff is regional, but it's definitely not the norm around here and it really stuck with me for a bit.

We have conceal and carry laws that don't require permits. I don't think there are laws you can't cover your face. You don't always know who has a gun so how would you know if someone has a gun with a mask on? That sounds like BS
