This month has been approximately 1 year long. I have a zoom meeting about our school district plan. People are whipped up in lather about it. Should be popcorn worthy. But also I’m here:

DD1 was invited to join a neighborhood school "pod" and it sounds amazing but we can't afford it and also have child care for DD2, and it doesn't seem fair for DD2 to just be stuck at home while DD1 is doing something else and getting to interact with friends (and like, DH and I still have to work). DH says it feels like we have to pick between our children. As the summer goes on, having them both home is getting worse (more fighting/too much togetherness). I hate it all.

Our school district had their board meeting re: the school year last week and then announced the "official" plan with how to register today.
And....they majorly changed an important component (band) in that 6 day window. The previous plan was going to allow for a fine arts credit to still be issued because they could still learn the music, even without marching. My DD is going to be heartbroken. She's already so sad about starting high school virtually; I'm afraid no band is going to be what breaks her.
Every day is like another gut punch. I'm so angry at our jackhole government for putting everyone in this spot.

CNN is also covering John Lewis as the motorcade makes its way to the capitol. While it's obviously a sad occasion, the stories being shared are so sweet.

byjove, I'm curious how much a "pod" costs? Is this with a full time teacher? And I'm not asking for an actual price, just wondering how the people organizing it came up with it!

This is based on a tutoring/teaching service that they've identified to hire through. I think this is probably a higher end cost, and they are figuring for 35 hours a week.

I don't think there are a ton of you in the reading thread, so I'll throw out that Red, White, and Royal Blue would probably be enjoyable for a lot of people. It's a US politics meets UK Royal romance, with a lot of pop-politics references. It came out last year and had a lot of high praise... so you've all probably already read it- but in case you have not!

My husband has somehow gotten on a pro life mailing list. He's gotten mail on behalf of Ted Cruz, Scott Walker, and today, Kevin McCarthy. Every time he gets something he makes a donation to Planned Parenthood so joke's on them.

DH says it feels like we have to pick between our children. As the summer goes on, having them both home is getting worse (more fighting/too much togetherness). I hate it all. This is what I hate about the pods, they are cost prohibitive to almost everyone. And let me clarify before the message gets twisted, this is not a fuck you to working parents, it’s a fuck you to the broken system. We are failing our kids on so many levels right now and I’m so upset that individual parents/families are having to figure it all out on their own. I’m incredibly worried about how this will contribute to an ever-widening education gap and how it will lead to even less funding for schools when they are already on a bare bones budget. Like, I would love to see schools being able to help set up more equitable and diverse pods so that all students could participate but with what money and resources? I feel like I keep coming back to it being incredibly unfair for kids to be doing anything academic at all. The idea behind public schools is that it is a free service for all of our children. But it can’t be implemented that way virtually. It just can’t. So some kids are going to have private tutors and some will get nothing at all and it makes my heart hurt. And I don’t know what the answer is. I don’t even know what to be lobbying for.

I read somewhere that Amazon has picked up the rights to make it into a series. I’m going to throw out another fun, light reading rec that touches on a lot of current events: A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole and the sequels. The first novel has a Black epidemiology grad student as a Cinderella-risqué heroine who has to figure out a pandemic, some very spicy romance scenes, great characterization, and a fun plot.

Where I am I now see preschools who have pivoted and are offering $1000 in person spots for you to virtual learn in plus all the former teachers who are offering their services at $15 a kid per hour to form your own pod. Our school PTA is working on a plan with local churches who are offering their space for parents who have to work, we can't get close to solving the problem of private tutoring unless we can find people to volunteer for free. It really sucks some can pay their way out of this while others are scrambling.

If we are getting the kids together in pods and at daycares anyway, I wish there would be more of a push to safely try to have schools open. Mainly for the inequity of it all that was just described. There are no winners, just rambling.

There are no winners, just rambling. This! This! This! Where is the oversight on these pods? Who is ensuring they are actually social distancing, sanitizing, and wearing masks? Who's in charge of temperature checks? Again asking questions into the void.

My 4 year old is supposed to do pre-k at school this fall & we use an in home daycare. They are only letting them do 10 at a time for pre-k (there are 20 kids total). They've made the groups based on where the kids go to daycare, since they'll already be together when they aren't at school, so I really liked that. The school is only 2.5 hours.

I make no moral judgment on parents that need to use a pod to keep their job and a roof over their head. But I’m mad at a system that is so broken that the only answer is that we now have to pay thousands of dollars for someone to facilitate your child’s public school education. Don’t even get me started on Betsy DeVos. Where is ladybrienne to punt her into the sun for me?

Someone in a news article I read asked if having kids in schools twice a week and then sending them elsewhere with who knows how big a germ circle the other three (out of necessity--that's in no way judgment) is truly safer for kids, staff and families than having kids in a school 5 days a week with a more controlled germ circle. It was a thought provoking question.
Obviously, we can't appropriately social distance in schools with everyone there but the question did make me think.
