We got a survey from the district. I was...not impressed.
You had three choices to choose from (no place to write other, or comments, or anything)
Choice A: Virtual school for the YEAR
Choice B: Unenrolling and home schooling
Choice C: In school with distancing and masks encouraged (not required because our ASS of a governor refuses to mandate it)
Like I want DD to be in school, but I want to see how many kids actually wear masks in her class first. I hate that the virtual school option is for the year.

yeah, a note about those drive through retail test sites the task force stood up: you have to have known exposure to qualify for a test at CVS, and you have to perform your own swab. So really A+ best practices there. My coworker was able to get a test at CVS without known exposure. And our CDC director explained that the self swabbing tests are a different type of test from the long swab tests and doesn’t require the brain depth level sample and that one isn’t more or less accurate than the other. I wonder if this is #regional because that was...not our experience lol

Because offering that up as "Choice B" like that would create major headaches for the state DOE in a lot of states.

I do not see why they can't make masks mandated in schools. Im in a mask mandated state and was at the amusement park this morning with DD. Everyone older than 3 was wearing a mask, and the majority of kids between 2 and 3 were too. This was outside, in the heat, for hours. Was it comfortable, no. Would I rather not have to wear it, yes. But it's possible for the MAJORITY of children to wear them, with little fuss.

We ventured out for the first time since March. We went to the Aquatic Gardens. Big park, not well known/heavily trafficked, fully planning to turn around and come home if it looked crowded or unsafe. They had capacity limited, all trails were one-way, and there was plenty of space for social distancing. Mask use was universal. It was a warm, sunny day but my boys wore their masks without complaint. DD was a little tougher, but she's 3. It felt SO WEIRD to be out, but it felt very safe. And bonus, the lotuses (or, as C calls them, "Kamala flowers") are beginning to bloom and they are absolutely stunning. I think some fresh air and sunlight outside of our front "yard" was really good for the kids. It felt like a low-risk, high reward option for some adventure.

This is not AT you shelia I’m just in actual shock.

If they aren’t required, some kids won’t come with them, and others will follow suit. I don’t understand not shooting for a mandate knowing that kids will have trouble100% adhering but something is better than nothing. WTF is that such a hard concept for people that trying is better than not trying at all (projecting based on mask arguments that they don’t even block all the germs).

dc2londonWe are in NJ. I have no clue of homeschool laws here. It is so frustrating because masks are required age 2 and up in stores, inside, etc but in schools as long as kids can distance masks are encouraged. 🤦♀️🤬🙄 I have few kind words for our governor right now. And many teachers including myself don’t feel comfortable in the classroom if kids aren’t required to have masks.

Plus if isn’t required you can’t enforce it either as a teacher. Like I would want all my students to wear masks around me but I can’t ask them to because they aren’t required.

This is not AT you shelia I’m just in actual shock. Yes, kiddie rides and roller coasters. I'm in CT and there are a couple things in play that I believe got us to this point. 1. We are between New York and Massachusetts, two early hotspots, and when shit went down with them and our cases began to rise, our Governor put into place strict measurements. 2. Our Governor is new and the race was really contentious. There is a lot of pressure on him to not fuck this up if he has any chance for re-election 3. Our state is blue and while it's been leaning heavily towards red recently, the majority are life long democrats 4. We were one of the first states that mandated masks and have not lifted the mask order. At all. For any reason. Our Governor has said throughout all the phases that masks are required. 5. We've opened back up slowly, with many restrictions, and businesses have been very cautious. Patrons have been following the rules because they know we'll be shutdown again. The shit in TX, CA, and FL have only enforced the importance of mask wearing. I've only seen two adults out without a mask and both were assholes about it. Everyone else is really respectful. As a result of all of this we are one of the few states that has been consistently dropping for weeks. Yesterday we had 58 positives out of 11,000 tests. Only 100ish people hospitalized. Positive test rate below 0.5%. This week the park was only open for season pass holders. Because the world hates me and decided to have a pandemic the one fucking time I get a season pass for anything! It was lovely. They even socially distanced the parking lot. Temperature checks and everyone in masks. No admittance if no mask.Only saw one family lax on them and I said something to an attendant. (The kid was like 10 and absolutely should have had their mask on, when little little kids were wearing theirs just fine) People had to use hand sanitizer before getting on the rides. They were spaced out at least 6 feet apart and only the parents could help them on. Rides were wiped down after each group. All of these restrictions were strictly enforced. We stayed for about two hours and it actually felt a bit normal for a second. And you know what? No one fucking died from getting their "freedom" taken away because they had to wear a fucking mask.

There’s no way in hell I would have been able to do it accurately. I had the rapid test so the swag wasn’t as long as the one DH got (don’t know if that matters) but the nurse in the ER did mine when I was admitted recently. I had to grip the sides of the bed while he twirled it while it was scraping my brain lol. I would have wimped our way before it needed to be done.

This isn’t like anything we’ve ever experienced, so why not take a little extra time to get shit together instead of fuck it, let’s see what happens. We all had to deal with that back in March and it was a total shit show. How do these people not learn their lesson?

I'm done for work for the day. We are going to visit my mom for the weekend. I'm a little nervous about it but I feel like who knows when the next chance will be and we've all been staying home for the last 3 months. So away we go and we'll be as safe as we can.
Also, I've been staying out of the Hamilton thread because I'm going to watch it for the first time with her this weekend. I'm excited!

We have season passes because if you buy them before Jan 1st you get a discount but we won't be using them. They aren't giving refunds but you can put it toward passes for next year 🙄

I know my school system sets the calendar more than a year in advance, and I assume there are contracts involved that make it difficult to make changes down the road.

So we are at Isle of Palms which is near Charleston. We are with my ILs (who have been smart about everything), husband's aunt (from an area in NC where people are strict and being smart), and BIL and his two boys. We had originally hoped to be able to go do stuff in Charleston but that's not happening. I feel like people are actually being pretty good here. We are at the house and going to the pool in the backyard and the beach. The beach looks fine, most people look to be in clusters with people they are staying with. There's one grocery store on the island and almost everyone wears a mask and the store makes announcements reminding people about social distancing. We are cooking at home. We've gone out to get coffee and the coffee shop requires masks and we're in and out quickly. I think a lot of the beach cases have to do with people also crowding in bars and restaurants and stuff like that. I don't feel like we're putting ourselves at a big increased risk vs being at home and being with family has been very good for everyone.

I think if you ask most kids, "would you rather try home school again or go to school, but you have to wear a mask?" they would choose mask. It's all about mindset and I can't deal with the whiners anymore.
