Dadgum it. Shyla killed another chicken. 😡 Looked like she was trying to play with it and got out of control. And for this reason, I can never let her with loose bunnies no matter how hard she works. That drive is just too strong. And another. The girls’ favorite chicken. I really don’t like that dog. Is it wrong to see if she can be rehomed to someone who hunts and and doesn’t have kids or other pets? I know that pets are a commitment and not a toy. And I have always truly believed in working hard to make pet relationships work. But I think we are all just miserable. I don’t think it is fair to her. And yet I know it would crush the girls. I don’t think it would be wrong. Sometimes, things just don’t work out the way we’d like and it’s not like you haven’t tried. As long as you’d be able to find a good fit for her, it may be better for everyone in the end. Our friends had a dog that would kill their chickens and they couldn’t break him of it, no matter how hard they tried.

Sorry, friend. ☹️ That's def a tough call, but that doesn't mean it's the wrong thing to do. My friend had her malinois for well over a year before rehoming her (she wasn't a good schutzhund prospect for my friend, but loved to run, so she went to someone that runs marathons and everyone was happy in the end). It sucks, but sometimes lifestyles and needs and expectations don't quite mesh. I'm not trying to tell you that you should rehome her; that's your family's decision, but please know that you're not a terrible person if that's the decision you come to. Also, you've got my number if you need/want to talk or text.

Dog update if anyone cares (maybe only rugger): Mh and I had a long talk last night. We both definitely admitted that we have been letting the dog slip and giving her entirely too much freedom and not being nearly as regimented with her as she needs. And that is on us, not her. So we are getting ourselves and her back on track. She does seem to remember all of her training and commands perfectly well and may even be more eager to please than she used to be. Perhaps that has come with age? Maybe a little less need to see and smell everything. That has ever existed and a little more dedication to her family? Is that a thing? We are also finally going to get her spayed. I know, I know. Mh really wanted to breed her and I am very against backyard breeding. But I especially don’t think she is exceptional breed quality. So I have delayed spaying her as a compromise. I am done with that compromise. But hopefully with getting her spayed and a decrease in her hormones, plus her being almost 4 now (omg really?!) she should be starting to settle some. We also had never planned on having free range chickens. We have a pen for a reason. She has killed 2 of the 3 free rangers so I don’t know if the 3rd will continue to free range solo. But the dog won’t have any unattended outdoor time anymore anyway. The kids were letting her out with them but not bringing her back in with them. So hopefully with all of these changes, things will be better.

We're chicken sitting again. They are pooping more this time than I've ever seen so some of the fresh eggs got soiled. The interwebz is overwhelming me what to do re: washing. What do my imaginary friends recommend to do to make the eggs safe for consumption tomorrow?

We just rinse them off right before cracking them, but otherwise leave the bloom on. We're getting a lot off poopy ones lately because we can't get the babies to sleep up on the bar, they still want to sleep in the nest box.

Same. We just wash right before eating. If they are super soiled, I might use a dry paper towel just to wipe them off before I bri g them in. I have the crazies. If you feel more comfortable, you can wash them with cold water now and then refrigerate them. But it’s not really that big of a deal. It’ll be fine.

If they are really poopy, I wash them and refrigerate.
But our eggs stay pretty clean, so I rarely wash them at all

That rooster looks like an older version of Katie Couric who we sold to Agway to rehome! Here’s Katie Couric.

Omg ovenrack, Cluck Norris does look just like Katie Couric! So we were told he was a young roo. Do you not think so? We got him from the animal shelter so his history is sketchy at best.

Oh he’s probably young! Katie Couric was only about 5 months old in that pic. Even at a year they’re much bigger.

Remember that time mh ordered 20 chicks to be delivered to my house while he was OOT on business for 2 weeks? Good times, good times, shouldn’t be stressful at all. Did I mention he also just now told me I need to take E to soccer at dinner time tonight? And we are in the middle of a huge audit at work? It’s fine. I’m fine. Where is that dog meme?

So if you have raised chicks from teeny tiny, please give me all your tips. I’m so afraid they are all going to die.
I have all the basic stuff. I have two 1qt waterers, one with Reg water and one with chick-saver electrolytes. I have starter crumble in a chick feeder and everyone (except my one tiny runt, Sweetie) is eating and drinking. They are in the old bunny cage with a heat lamp, a tray for roosting, and pine shavings.
Anything I am missing? Any special tricks? How many should I expect to die?

tj We lined the bottom of the pen with paper towels and put the shavings on top of that, it made cleaning it out much easier and we did a full clean out every 24-36 hrs, and sprinkled fresh shavings a couple times per day. We had I think 45 chicks? And lost I think 3. For no apparent reason. We had the same amount of waterers and food that you've got so I think that is good. I found it all very nerve-racking but my kids loved it. Eta we got ours at 2 days old. Teeny tiny indeed! You got this.

Aww. If MK were here she would tell you to watch out for pasty butt.
Otherwise, sounds like you’ve got it under control!

Our girls are in full molt and have stopped laying eggs all together. Is it safe to say that they will not start laying again until closer to spring now or will they lay sporadically through the winter? We don’t heat the coop or provide any extra light source.

Ours laid sporadically all winter long, and we didn't heat the coop or provide extra light source either.

They all made it through the night! I did cave and dropper-feed the tiny one some electrolytes a few times just to make sure. She looks much perkier today.

Cupcake on the other hand, poor thing looks so raggedy lol. She lost everything at once and is slowly getting new in, she looks pitiful lol.

rugger well that is entirely adorable! The chicks are all good! Thankfully they grow very quickly. We had to go ahead and move them out to the barn, they were just too messy inside. Luckily it has been fairly warm, and of course they are in the barn and also have a heat lamp. But hopefully we don’t have any major weather for a few more weeks. 🤞🏻
