So cute rugger! Such a great collection of names too. Thanks! A originally named hers Starry Night, but decided it was hard to remember and then discovered she looks like an erupting volcano, so Volcano it is! ... Volcano is a mystery chicken. The place we got her from originally bought her as a Legbar, but as she grew was like "I don't think so" and she sent recent pics to the nursery asking for help with an ID. They said she kinda looked like an Easter Egger, but with a different comb... So we have a chicken "mutt" I think 😂 The others are a Silver Laced Wyandotte, Blue Rock, and Barred Rock. Oh, I though Volcano was an Ameracauna!

We have one hen that has been laying a soft shelled egg for over a week. I don’t know which one it is yet. They have free access to oyster shells and have all seemed to recovered from the mite/lice treatment we did awhile ago. Anything I need to be doing? Any ideas? Of course we’ve been throwing that egg away and everyone else has been laying fine.

We mix the shell and the pellets together in the feeder, and scatter scratch and mealworms.

I have an incubator full of quail eggs now. I shared some quail eggs with a friend from co-op that was interested in having quail. Her husband didn't want them, but after she cooked up some eggs, he's on board. The local big place doesn't have any hatching eggs or day old babies in stock, so I'm going to hatch out some of mine for her. I've got one little rooster in with 21 hens, so I'm not sure how fertile they might be. He's been crowing his little heart out with the spring and seems rather active, so I'm hoping he's servicing most of the ladies at least.

If quail are like chicken he'll just keep going until his heart gives out.

We’re getting a dozen hatching eggs sometime in the next week, and borrowing an incubator!

And they don't care about the dog because we've never let anything bad happen. Loren most definitely wants to eat them, but we've been doing work from a distance outside to work on her self control. Poor dog was caught off guard and didn't know what to do when they just waltzed right up to the patio door and pecked at it. 🤦

She is such a good girl rugger. We do distance work with shyla too but if we aren’t on top of her (which yes, we should always be) she is immediately at the fence to get as close as possible. But the free range chickens, she will stalk from a good 6 feet away. She doesn’t attack them. But she follows at a crouch and points at them with her tail just wagging like crazy. Same with the bunnies. If we let her, she will crouch at the cage and stare at them with her tail wagging for literally hours. But she doesn’t try to get in or anything. She just has to be as close as possible to stare.

it's so icky and damp here today that the chickens keep coming up on our covered patio. I wouldn't mind it, except that they poop everywhere and that I *definitely* mind. I'm pretty sure they're just seeking dry shelter... Maybe I need to throw down some fresh hemp bedding in the coop so they'll go in there.

We put a roof over our run! We spend a lot of time shoveling snow out in the winter, and with mud in the run during spring. so I’m pretty amped to not deal with those things.
Additionally, we candled the 11 fertile eggs we put in the incubator, and 10 have embryonic activity. The 11th might, but it’s a very dark/thick shell.

I'm trying to convince S that we should cover the little run that we have.

My kids joined a Garden Club last month at a nearby community garden which also has three hens. We went twice this week just to visit the chickens and happened to be there at feeding time. The nice lady let us in the coop and then gave us a still warm egg. We're adding it to tomorrow's French Toast Casserole, and I'm so grateful for my kids to have this exposure to gardening and animals!

My chickens are crazy little things. And they keep coming to the patio, even though they get shooed away every time. They're like pre-teens getting caught and then awkwardly scattering like "go go! Quick run!"

I think one of our ladies is about to lay her first egg.. Her comb and wattles got brighter red, she's making extra noise, and randomly lays down in places. And she checked out the nest boxes. The girls are on "egg watch" and check all the time

Tapa is being weird and keeps telling me that there’s a new post here.
We have seven chicks but one, Whipple, has been walking poorly, suddenly. She’s been separated and is on Sav-a-chick water supplement. They’re four weeks old, so I was hoping we were past the risk of random deficiencies. She doesn’t appear to have an obvious physical issue, IE broken leg or the like.
One of our chicks still doesn’t have a name. Which I find funny. She’s a buff Orpington. M can come up with 199 names, but I don’t like them, so she named two chicken and that’s all I’ve let her choose.

We're chicken sitting this weekend! I have no idea what type of hens they are but know they are named after the sisters in Hamilton LOL. Going to our neighbor's backyard will be our own private playground plus fresh eggs. Yum yum.

Ugh. Frankie, our rooster, finally decided to have it out with me today. He's been acting out at me ever since I had to bring in a hen that was injured. I made the mistake of reaching in and grabbing her out of their safe bush they hang out in and he saw me. He's generally okay, but whenever I walk from the quail house, by the bush where I took his hen (I gave her back when she was better), he gets a little aggressive. He rushes at my feet, then backs off. Today, he went for it. He rushed in, pecked at my foot and then kicked my foot and tried to spur it. I wear sloggers rubber shoes, so it didn't do anything, but I had to defend myself. I put my foot up at face level and let him face off with the sole of my shoe. He backed off each time and I took a step towards him and did it again. He jumped a few times and threatened to kick, but never made contact. I kept doing it until he finally turned and walked away. So, I think I "won" the fight. But he managed to uncap one of his spurs and it's broken and bleeding. I grabbed some chicken feed in a bowl and threw handfuls on the ground to distract him while I got the veterycin and managed to spray his leg twice. I was actually thinking I needed to trim his spurs anyway, so I guess I'm doing a late night rooster fix tonight when they all turn into zombies.
I love this rooster and we need him to protect since the chickens free range, so I wanted to let him keep his spurs sharp, but he'll get a trim tonight. Stupid booger eats out my hand, but just gets triggered sometimes. I'm glad his rooster instincts kick in and he defends, but I'm not a threat! At least it's only ever been directed at me, he's never aggressive with my husband or kids. Silly rooster.

It’s funny you say that. Bc our roo’s former owners swore he hated pink shoes. And I thought it was silly. But sure enough, the day he attacked me repeatedly (and got his spur stuck on my shoelace and it ripped off) I was wearing pink shoes. I had to repeatedly square off at him acting big and loud to prove I was the bigger rooster. But he finally ignores me. Well, he keeps a good eye on me. But at least he doesn’t attack anymore.

I call them my chicken shoes and I put them on to take care of the chickens. I guess I need new chicken shoes. I wore my black sneakers the rest of the day today and he didn't come at me at all.

We got our first eggs! S found one in the middle of the yard yesterday, which prompted him to look in the nesting boxes, where he found one more. Woo! The kids are going to be so excited to hear.
