I have all kinds of things growing various herbs coming up all from seed--basil always does well in that spot and rosemary, but added sage and dill and I"m not sure what else. asparagus (might not come up, transplants from friend's garden) cucumbers from seed and a large eggplant plant that has overwintered two winters now.
About a dozen pots of tomatoes (the garden spot that was my tomato garden is full of cottonwood roots that I'm not fighting that battle this year), some overwintered and are producing fruit, some are 3 inches tall from seed. Also several pots of peppers, mostly hot little ones
3 raised beds one is mostly beans, green beans, bush beans, plus some okra and corn stuck in for beans to grow in. one is mostly purple sweet peas, like snow peas until they get big enough to eat the peas, since peas were winter crop on it's way out, there's squashes (zuchini and yellow squash) plus a couple peppers, and either a tomato or bell pepper that came up on it's own. and one is the leftover winter crop of lettuce (plus new baby lettuce coming up from new seeds) and spinach that one has some peppers (dh can never have enough pepers), and butternut and spaghetti squash from seed.
luckily my water bill has only been $50/month. WE get irrigation, but there are so many tree roots, and bermuda grass, that I just couldn't fight it anymore in my "old age". so above ground, raised beds and pots are what I have right now.
and I have a forest of sunflowers coming up from last year's sunflower seeds the birds spread all over the yard.

I love what you have going on there. I have plants started from seeds to include; tomatoes, eggplants, bell peppers, jalapenos. These are going into large raised planters I have. I have a landscaped area for cucumbers and 25 strawberry plants in hanging planters. This year I also started two blueberry bushes on my patio.

Who's planted this year? and what and how did you plant? Not much, but as I've never been a gardening until recently I'm afraid it's just a beginning of a new addiction. I planted tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers (jalapenos included!) this year for the vegetable garden using peat pots.

Last year I had some peas and beans in a small bed. I just ordered a 4'x8' raised bed that a guy is going to deliver today. So I guess I'm a real gardener now. I have kale, collards, spinach, habaneros, basil, and oregano seedlings started inside. I want to get some cucumber and dill seeds too. 4'x 8' seems really big so I definitely have room for more, I'm just not sure what! I'm zone 5b and it's still been below freezing at night.

Help me out. What would you plant in this planter at the end of our patio? Zone 5b, half of it is mainly shady, the other half is somewhat sunny (not FULL sun, but the level below that I guess). We do have a fair amount of fog in the summer, too. Keep in mind I have a lot of deer around. I'd prefer perennial but open to annuals too I guess.

I wanted to put in another pollinator garden but all the local plant sales have been cancelled. So those plans are on hold. I cleaned up and seeded my existing pollinator beds the other day. Some of the perennials are coming up nicely. I had ordered a bunch of seeds from Prairie Moon Nursery (great for native plants) but was a little late this year with all the craziness going on. A couple of the things require cold stratification so they’re in the fridge but I’m afraid the timing is too far gone for a good growing season.
Chives are up and the lavender survived the winter. I moved my potted rosemary outside. One raised bed has been seeded with dill and parsley. Basil is all that’s left on my herb list.
Nerd alert: I started a moss garden the other year and it has done incredibly well. It’s in the back corner and goes between the raised beds. It’s expanded a lot this winter and spring. I love it and am super proud of it. I cleared out another section and am encouraging it’s spread.
I’m not sure how many vegetables I’m going to do this year. At a minimum I should grab a few tomatoes.

Dear lord, sorry that's so giant I'm used to using the sunset Western Garden book zones rather than the usda hardiness zones, as I'm worried about all of the climate impacts on gardening not just hardiness. you can google your state and sunset garden zone and might find zones which takes into account more things like length of growing season, timing and amount of rainfall, winter lows, summer highs, humidity. A quick google of flowering things in 5b tho, I could see a low hedge of hibiscus along there.

Thanks for the ideas! I like the idea of pollinators. Maybe I'll keep it simple and scatter wildflowers.

Hi all! H, DD, and I are just starting our garden. I tend to not be the best at growing things, but I love to try. Quick intro: I’m 32, H is 35, and we have a 13 month old DD. We also have 2 dogs (black lab and a GSP). Your garden sounds amazing AmyG! Are you going to eventually transplant those blueberries scottcool? We tried blueberries 2 (3?) years ago, but they didn’t root. I want to try again though. We love blueberries. We have 4 raised beds. 2 big and 2 small. So far we’ve planted carrots and turnips (seeds), and we have 6 potato cages. This is our first year trying potatoes. We still need to plant peas, green beans, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, herbs, and decide on a few other things to plant. We will do tomatoes in pots. I’m hopeful that everything will grow well this year.

Of the two, one looks great and the other...not so great. Their supposed to be great for patios and I was hoping to leave them in their current pot. Only time will tell. We have 4 raised beds. 2 big and 2 small. So far we’ve planted carrots and turnips (seeds), and we have 6 potato cages. This is our first year trying potatoes. I really want to get into carrots, turnips, and potatoes. Might do a fall garden with them this year.

Seeds we have started are: tomatoes, dill, cilantro, parsley, basil, eggplants, melons, broccoli, cabbage and squash. We’ll direct sow beans, corn, carrots, potatoes, kale, butter lettuce and some others I’m likely forgetting. Our garlic, asparagus and chives are up and looking cute. Jerusalem artichokes have their own little bed that we’ll add flowers too.
We keep the tines on the mower high for the wild strawberries (June is Anishnaabe strawberry moon and the kids favourite time) as well as the clover for the bees. We plant lots of sunflowers for the pollinators too. We have a ridiculous amount of raspberry canes so pruned some hoping for a good yield this year. Our medicinal sage always does well and we’ll try a few tobacco plants this year too.
We’re experimenting with hugelkulture beds this year. We dug our first one and it looks like a grave lol. Planning to add more and raise our other existing beds.

We’re fans of companion planting but honestly aren’t the greatest gardeners. It’s MH’s work season and I struggle keeping up with it all with the kids, but we try.

@babybeans We just bought 3 raised beds and we are going to do hugelkulture too! We have a little forest behind our house so we have an endless supply of logs etc.

I have two raised beds and some containers and am considering a third raised bed now that I have my garden area fenced off to keep the dogs out. I have planted so far:
bed 1: kale, snap peas, beans, radishes, carrots, zucchini, cilantro bed 2: raspberry (looked like it died after I planted it but now it seems like it has new growth?), sunflowers, onions, cucumber, marigolds, beets containers: strawberries tomatoes oregano
going to add some peppers and probably more herbs and onions

I'm soooo jealous of everyone with plants already! We are still pretty cold at night, and not that warm during the day. I'll get my potatoes in this weekend hopefully and maybe peas and kale but everything else will need to wait until June. The folk wisdom here is the first full moon in June which is June 5. :/

I hope your blueberries do well scottcool! We have to wait until June also to plant everything else catladymeow. I want to plant everything, but I know most things will just die if planted now.

This is my blue carpet phlox that we planted last year and didn’t get any flowers to blossom. I’m going to add more photos later because this is from about a week and a half ago and they have grown even fuller. I have some pink ones too that are coming in. Hoping to get in a few potted herbs soon.

Anyone have any ideas why a boxwood would die when the 3 planted next to it (all in a row) are fine? Would wind kill it? It didn’t fall over. The other 3 are doing pretty well, and the one that died was on the corner of the house. Maybe it got more wind? They were all planted at the same time.

They were all planted at the same time. there's some boxwood diseases that can mean one dies and then spreads to the other ones. I'd do some research online, maybe call local nursery and ask. details like did it die quickly or slowly dry up

rainbowsockmonkey put some bamboo skewers standing up in the soil? I've heard sprinkling red pepper flakes could work, too.
