Fuck, fuck, fuck. E just told me they ride 2 per seat on the bus to school. And 3 on the way to after school car. I’ve been hearing this around here. Too. And that as long as masks are on and windows are open, it’s totally fine. I trust masks a lot but not the ability of 5-10 year olds on a bus to wear them correctly.

Our bus system is a disaster and I know that for the first couple days of school they had the K-4 kids sitting up to FOUR in a seat. How is that even possible.
Honestly the covid-of-it-all is the least of my concerns with the bussing here. My kid doesn’t ride it because I have zero trust that the adults in charge are being safe or making good decisions.

Oh ya. Our buses are 3 to a seat and hour long rides. We are not in a large rural area. Luckily my kids are last on first off.

Both my dogs have kennel cough (not vet confirmed yet, but they're going tomorrow morning). My older dog sounds horrendous, the puppy so far sounds much better. I feel awful because both got groomed this week but neither were symptomatic during their appointments so I think that means it was unlikely that they spread it? I of course wouldn't have sent them if I had any idea, it started so suddenly. I let the groomer know just in case. We boarded them last week when we were out of town so I'm assuming that's where they were exposed.
Researching it makes it seem like it's basically the dog version of covid- super contagious, need to quarantine, pcr test to confirm, coughing and runny nose. They are both vaccinated for it but the vaccine doesn't prevent them from getting it, just lessens the symptoms and speeds recovery time (sound familiar?) UGH. I hate having them sick, although both are still alert and eating and drinking, etc, so minus the cough they seem to be feeling ok.

I called N's preschool with some questions yesterday. My province has mandated vaccines for all government employees and people who work with "vulnerable populations" (which includes children). But I wasn't clear on whether or not private preschools fell under those rules so I asked if all the teachers (there are 3 at the preschool, no other staff) were vaccinated. Instead of just saying "yes" she was like, "I can assure you that we are complying with all of the government regulations regarding Covid". I was like, "so... yes?" "We're complying with the regulations." "So your preschool is included in the government mandate that states vaccines are mandatory" "Yes."
I feel like she was reluctant to just say they were all vaccinated for some reason. And I hung up feeling unsure of whether or not she really understood my question about being included in the vaccine mandate. I don't know, the "we're complying with the regulations" line just felt like a way to dodge answering. And who is checking if these people really did get vaccinated, when it's just a small private preschool?
She was very eager to explain all of their cleaning protocols and the symptom checking/temperature taking that happens at the door each school day, and that parents are expressly told not to bring the kids if they or anyone in their household has any symptoms at all. It's a small operation that isn't part of a bigger school, so I feel like exposures are minimal.
I'm just thinking out loud about it lol. I still have reservations. I'm going to try to dig up some clearer info on whether or not private ECE places are truly part of the vaccine mandate.
ETA: Yeah, from what I've read the vaccine mandate applies only to ECEs who are also provincial employees, and I know they aren't provincial employees. So I'm leaning toward they aren't all vaccinated and she just didn't want to come out and say it.

Also, she said that in her opinion, masks (on the kids) caused some problems last year. For example, she said there were a few times where a child took another child's mask and put it on. And she said they'd sometimes fall on the floor or in a toy bin that everyone was touching, so sometimes a kid would put it back on after that.
N is very good about wearing her mask and I just can't see it randomly falling off, but I could see it hitting the floor during snack time.
What do you guys think? Is it more hassle than it's worth for 3 year olds?
ETA: I didn't have L wear a mask at preschool last year, but there were only 6 kids in his class. N's school has 20 kids.

mintyblueair 20 kids in a preschool class seems like a lot! If N will wear it, I say send her with the mask and see what happens. Regarding the vaccine thing, on the optimistic side I want to say she was reassuring you without giving away information about the specific employees. However, I think you’re right. It sounds like they aren’t enforcing employees to be vaccinated because they don’t fall within the required group. Maybe N’s teachers are vaccinated though, even if it’s not a school rule? 🤞🏻🤞🏻

mintyblueair, if they're not strictly required, it sounds to me like someone might not be vaccinated. And maybe it's complicated. Like I have one employee who's not vaccinated, but he's had covid. When in conversation it's just easier to say that everyone here is vaccinated. Technically he just has "nature's vaccine," which I know is not the same as the shot, but it's also not the same as being straight up not vaccinated/infected. And all of that would be too much to say to a customer. Or maybe with such a small place she has fear that parents would know who the unvaccinated person is and retaliate (or pull their kids).

They're divided into two classes of 10, but then they have free play all together at the end of the morning. I do think the mask will be ok for her so I'll send her with it for now.

Yes, I suspect she doesn't want to either single out the unvaccinated person/people or have people pull their kids out. Those are understandable reasons from her perspective. My dad told me not to send her if they wouldn't confirm they were all vaccinated but I do think we'll keep her in for now and keep an eye on the number of cases in our city.

Is this a covid thread? Or a mental health thread? Both? Neither? Eleven?

Is this a covid thread? Or a mental health thread? Both? Neither? Eleven? It appears to have begun as both. IMO. Eighteen long months ago. A lifetime, really.

I can’t even remember anymore and the original post is gone. Maybe we need new separate mental health and covid threads that are more clearly delineated? Also fuck eighteen months.
