The high pitched, ear-splitting screech-screaming for the heck of it? I can handle tantrums and crying but this makes me feel so on edge. Do I just ignore it and will he get bored of it? I try to remove him or myself from the room when I can but he did it all the way home from daycare in the car. He’s not even really upset. Sometimes at the end he asks me to pick him up because that makes him feel better so I’ve talked to him about using his words when he wants a hug instead of screaming but I don’t think that’s sticking. With school-daycare closures looming, I need help.

I...um... screamed back. We tried talking, time out, removing from the situation, extra hugs, etc. Etc.
Then it escalated to the point where she was screeching in the bath. We have a VERY tiny bathroom and the sound would echo. It sent me right over the edge one night at the end of a long week when I was on my last straw. So I screamed back. Scared the living shit out of her. Stopped immediately. I apologized for scaring her but explained how much it hurt and scared me when she does it. It stopped for a bit and then I had to do it a couple times in the following months, but she eventually got the idea and it stuck.

I...um... screamed back. We tried talking, time out, removing from the situation, extra hugs, etc. Etc. Then it escalated to the point where she was screeching in the bath. We have a VERY tiny bathroom and the sound would echo. It sent me right over the edge one night at the end of a long week when I was on my last straw. So I screamed back. Scared the living shit out of her. Stopped immediately. I apologized for scaring her but explained how much it hurt and scared me when she does it. It stopped for a bit and then I had to do it a couple times in the following months, but she eventually got the idea and it stuck. Ugh, I feel like I’m on the verge of screaming myself. And I am not a yeller. But I’m also worried that he might think it’s a fun game if I scream back. It’s so awful. |

The other day I got him to scream in the living room with the door closed while I got dinner ready in the kitchen. Maybe I can have a designated screaming area? |

That sounds like a reasonable compromise. It couldn't hurt to try. |

In the car I explained to dd that screaming wasn’t acceptable, she needed to use her big kid words, and I wouldn’t talk to her until she stopped. Then I turn the music up.
I have also used that method while cooking and just crank the radio. It was surprisingly effective for her. I’m not sure if it was me ignoring her behavior or having a competing loudness that worked. Now both kids know to leave me alone when the music is on in the kitchen 😂 Although now it results in them having a dance party while I try to cook. But at least they’re not harassing me.
