My uncle is finally having his bypass surgery today. I want to go visit my aunt but the hospital is screening everyone at the door and limiting it to immediate family. Which is totally understandable. I’ll have to rely on her text updates.
If you could send your good thoughts and prayers his way that his age, weight, and other underlying health issues don’t make it a more complicated surgery it would be much appreciated.

curmudgeon sending T&Ps for your uncle and family. We've been in a similar situation with FIL and I know it is so scary. (((Hugs)))

We are closed till April 13th here (though teachers are to report Monday and Tuesday to make “learning packets and activities” for parents to pick up for their kids since internet access is out of reach for many here)
Then we’re going to hunker down for awhile. My goal is to potty train DD2 during this time off... and keep her away from everyone.

My grocery pickup order was fulfilled and on time. I was shocked everything was on it. Thankful, though.
DH's school is still in session as of right now even though our Governor issued a state of emergency for my state. He said all closures and cancellations should be determined at the local level. Idk if I agree that's smart.
My town's P&R has suspended all league play so my volleyball season is over before it started. 😭 I've waited so long to play again and I'm really sad but I totally get it. Def a first world prob.
We're keeping the boys home next week (DCP is currently on a cruise and we decided not to expose our family to them ).

curmudgeon Wishing your uncle a speedy recovery! danvers That’s good your school board is putting together packages for the students. I actually have no idea what I should be doing with DD1, I’m hoping after March break the teachers will send something out. I hope your DD is able to continue to recover and stay healthy. CoachTsWife I get it about the volleyball, my last playoff hockey game was cancelled and our pools are closed so I won’t be able to start my triathlon swim class at the end of the month. It’s nice to have some adult only athletic time away.

Taitai well that’s mildly terrifying. If you can get reinfected does that mean it’s a retrovirus like a cold and there’s no way to come up with a vaccine? Or even if they can come up with a vaccine, does that mean we’re all stuck like this until it can be developed? Same sad story here. School closed indefinitely, no fucking toilet paper and people mobbing the stores. We’re doing online deliveries and trying to stay home as much as possible except to go for walks around the neighborhood. We still have our nanny coming because otherwise we couldn’t work. DH already works from home and I’m working from home for the foreseeable future. Our company has not officially said everyone should telecommute who can, which I think is highly irresponsible. 😡 DS just got over a cold thing with low grade fever. He gets fevers with everything. When all this shit blows over we may ask the pedi about getting his tonsils out and if that would help. danvers glad little one is on the mend. Sick kids are the worst, we worry so much! curmudgeon glad your uncle did ok with the surgery. He’s lucky to have caring family members looking out for him.

Taitai thank you. That is what I have been having trouble understanding or finding information on. I knew there had to be more to it. You're not the only one. I've been mostly reading the news that pops up on my phone and honestly I should've been reading a broad range of international news outlets. I started becoming more afraid and really changed my tone on the matter as the crisis escalated very quickly in Italy. The cases in state here have exponentially jumped in only a week and a half. My sister and I talked and she's in the DC area and told me to be prepared but said their area would likely get hit before mine...boy were we both wrong. There are more confirmed cases now in my county than hers. I also think because they only started testing a week ago that there were already positive cases walking and spreading it around. Ugh! The Trump admin reaction to this has been a complete and utter failure. I am just praying that people will be sensible to curb the spread so the healthcare system won't get overwhelmed; Italy is in horrific shape. If China weren't able to built their 2 hospitals in response, the mortality rate would've been significantly higher. ETA. I am glad your uncle's surgery was a success. Will be thinking of him and your family that he will have an uneventful recovery.

danvers so glad to hear baby girl is on the up and up! We're closed here for 2 weeks but honestly with how fast it's escalating and problems with testing availability, I won't be surprised if it could be a least a month as well.

I ran out early this morning shortly and totally avoided Kroger when I passed and saw their parking lot was pretty full so I decided to go to Whole Foods instead.. I rather pay than have to deal with the insane hoards with possibly empty shelves. It was certainly busier than normal but manageable. The WFs produce guy told me that if people kept on coming like so he was going to be out of product by mid morning. I was like holy crap. Anyways I managed to get a whole week worth of produce and possibly some if I meal plan accordingly to use up the produce efficiently from most perishable that way I only need to maybe run out once a week or 1.5 weeks? The fresh meats section was bare. Luckily I had restocked it a week or so ago. Crazy... Taitai what's the situation where you are?

Ugh - sorry to hear about all the panic buying in the USA. We’ve had that off and on here for months now. Hand sanitizer and masks have been newly impossible to come by since late Jan. Thais don’t use toilet paper though (bidets instead), so at least we haven’t had problems getting that! 🤣
The international schools are closing, there are now jumps in #s of cases (most of which are not being officially reported by the government, but now being shared on social media). I think there was an effort to not test and somehow hope it would just go away? I predict that will NOT work out. Sigh.
People are staying home, avoiding public outings when possible. It’s still okay to go out to eat at some places, provided it’s not super packed and there aren’t many people there.
Face masks are ubiquitous.
Overall, people here are scared and taking it really seriously, but we are still probably going to get slammed with a big jump in cases soon. I’ll be interested to see how the healthcare system here can handle it.
There is a 20 year old university student who caught it likely on a trip to Japan in Feb. She tried to stay at home for 13 days and deal with it on her own, but she is now in serious condition and had to be hospitalized. She was totally healthy and had no co-morbidity factors. Many cases like this have happened in Asia, which makes this thing so scary. Not enough is known about the virus to figure out what is going on.

Sick kids are the worst, we worry so much! curmudgeon glad your uncle did ok with the surgery. He’s lucky to have caring family members looking out for him. Yes - the whole re-infection thing is really scary. There have been studies out of Wuhan, which said that the re-infection rate was 14%, and re-infection was happening within 1-2 months. That’s super concerning - because it means that the antibodies people develop after getting COVID-19 don’t last very long in some cases. The virus is so new, nobody knows why this is, or if there are specific reasons in China why the re-infection rate was so high. There are already 2 strains of COVID-19 going around too, and researchers are saying that it seems to be mutating quite quickly. As such, it might be more of like the flu or the common cold - we need to build up a herd immunity to it over time. Vaccines might only be 30-60% effective (depends on if the vaccine makers pick the “right” strain on an annual basis). This thing just really sucks and is different from what is known, so I guess that’s what worries me the most. Not knowing why the virus behaves how it does and the possibility that it’s just going to be something be have to deal with, or build up an immunity to as a population (like the common cold).

Schools are not cancelled here but there are tons of restrictions in place. DD has a sniffly nose from a cold and she is not allowed at school. My sister and brother in law just got back from Palm Springs and are in 14 day self isolation. My in-laws are in Australia and have no plans to come back early despite the minister of foreign affairs urging citizens while flights are available. They went for my nephews wedding and to visit my SIL and her family who live there. They are retired so as long as they can get prescriptions (which I imagine they could) really if they get stuck there no big deal I guess 🤷🏽♀️ Everything like Rec centres and programs are shut down so we basically live at home. DH cannot work remotely so is still working with an abundance of caution. When DD is healthy she will still attend school. And I am on maternity leave so home with the boys and if they cancel school no huge deal for us thankfully

H and I have to unexpectedly return to work without kids tomorrow and Tuesday (we got called tonight) and luckily daycare is still open so they are taking the girls for for two days. I offered extra hand sanitizer and wipes as a giant thank you (I was going to bring it in at the end of the week anyway when I went in to pay tuition for the weeks we wouldn’t be there but now they get them tomorrow when they probably could use them more anyway!)
I’m definitely going to have to set some limits on screen time over the next month+ because this weekend we definitely indulged 😬😬😬
Also, I need the weather to warm up a bit faster - we have two acres so the social distancing stuff will feel more manageable if I can turn my children loose outside for a while each day.

Taitai Are you seeing any trend that you’re in the downward curve for new cases? Are there rules about sizes of public gatherings in place like there are starting to be here now? The fact that people get it again has me worried especially for DD2, who cant even properly build immunity when exposed. I may loose it tomorrow on anyone at work who suggests this Is all too much for “just a virus”. Not gonna lie, I’ve kinda wanted to try a bidet for awhile now. We have plenty of TP due to H and I both adding megapacks it to the Instacart a month or so back but.... this may be just the push to convince H to try it. 🤷♀️

Well, my DCP and her family of 4 is back in the states from her cruise. She sent an update that she started feeling unwell last Wednesday/Thursday (fever and cough) and was told to self quarantine. She's closing this week and plans to try to get tested. If she does and it's negative she'll open next week. But we're not sending the boys back for a while. They'll be home at least 2 weeks.
I received notice today to work from home for the next 2 weeks, at least.
DH's school is still in session and I'm frustrated about it. IDK how the Superintendent isn't understanding this is opposite of social distancing and flattening the curve. I'm curious to see how attendance is, according to the town's Facebook group, lots of parents are keeping their kids home.

CoachTsWife OF COURSE SHE GOT SICK. I still can’t believe how incredibly irresponsible and selfish it was of her to be a DCP and take a cruise at a time like this - when people depend on her for a safe, healthy childcare environment. Honestly - screw her and people like her. Sorry - I just can’t with the amount of stupidity and lack of empathy I am seeing from people who refuse to look around at what is happening in the rest of the world and not take this seriously! It’s such an arrogant attitude. Not to make you freak out either, but we’ve seen cases here where the patients have had symptoms, but tested negative for COVID-19 for up to 10 days, and then they suddenly test positive. It can take a while for a positive test to come back, even if someone has it. Hopefully having your kids away for 14 days will be okay. If she still has ANY symptoms, however, I would be really cautious about entrusting your kids to her care again. danvers The cases here are spiking - I am sure we are going to have a large outbreak soon. Many in this country have been practicing some form of social distancing/avoiding public places for months now, but the problem is that our country is HUGE tourist destination, and until last week, the government here did absolutely nothing to curb the inflow of tourists from places with outbreaks (like China, Italy, South Korea, Japan, etc.). So....the virus is here, and now it’s spreading all over the place. China, South Korea, and Singapore have been able to lock down and significantly slow the spread of cases in their countries. But, they adopted practices that my country has not done up to this point. I am positive we’re going to see massive spikes in cases around the world - especially when the virus spreads unchecked in third world places like Africa and Central America. Sorry to be a downer.

CoachTsWife ugh! yeah...they need to close schools already...it will be inconvenient for working parents but the inconvenience is trivial in comparisn to the imminent danger. I do not know what the cases where you are but holy hell, it escalated here at an alarming speed. I am regretting for not taking it as seriously as I should when my sister told me in January to be prepared ( she can sometimes be OTT ) and I thought being in the middle of the country, it would take a bit of time before it showed up here and the gov would've stepped in by then with preventative measures but I should've known better especially with a buffoon like Trump at the helm. It's staggering in just a day cases in state rose 30% and that's with them starting to test only last week so there's very likely already a whole bunch of infected people unknowingly spreading it around. Lest to say I feel like an idiot and should've heeded my sister's advice. I am praying that everyone has the common sense to heed the CDC's advice and we won't have a situation like Italy which is frightening and just sad. My sister and I were talking and we're pretty darn sure we aren't getting the full story from China. Think about it, for the Chinese gov to go the distance as they have, it can't be good. We're also wondering the disaster in North Korea since they have denied any cases which is BS, they're sandwiched between the first and worst nations hit and with their crumbling health care, I don't even want to think what a horrific situation it is/can be. ETA. Why would anyone consider a cruise especially now? It's basically a floating gargantuan petri dish. NTY

danvers....I am glad to hear DC is able to take the girls which means DD2 is feeling well! I hope she keeps on the up and up. I was wondering if you or anyone else might have recos for some chapter books for DS? He reads well and the books he's been bringing back from school is not challenging enough for him. We tried chapter 2 of Harry Potter last night and he's still upset about how Harry's being treated by the Dursley's and had a nightmare last night so I think we'll shelve it for a while again. I am trying to find ebooks from the library. I am not familiar with children's American authors. Only one I know is Laura Ingalls Wilder and not too sure if DS will find stories about pioneer girls engaging...hhmmmm I may try the Farmer boy...?

Taitai yeah we are not happy. At all. We have talked about pulling them but IDK how soon we can find another provider. Even if she acquires a test and tests negative, I feel uneasy about sending them to their house. Her entire family of 4 was exposed on the cruise. There is a positive case in a rural area between DH's school and where my family lives. The distance is about 50 miles from my hometown to the school. The older gentleman went to the dr, failed the screening and was not tested. Treated and sent home. He got worse and went to ER. Failed the screening again but was admitted. A physician became overly concerned and jumped through hoops to get a test. Patient's health declined and was transferred to a bigger hospital. Next day test came back positive. Patient had no interaction with anyone at risk (travel, etc). They are saying this patient got it from community spread and none of the area schools are closed. MIND BOGGLING. A couple of our surrounding state's governors have closed schools. We're calling for our governor to do the same but nothing so far.

Only one I know is Laura Ingalls Wilder and not too sure if DS will find stories about pioneer girls engaging...hhmmmm I may try the Farmer boy...? My DS1 (turns 5 soon) has really been getting into chapter books lately. Here are some recommendations: Harry the Poisonous Centipede (series) by Lynn Reid - I think your DS would love these books Andy and Terry treehouse series - 13 Storey Treehouse (and then they go up in number), by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton Stuart Little and Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White Ramona Quimbey books by Beverly Cleary Roland Dahl books (soooo many good ones - age recommendation is 7 - 9, but some that are good for kids on the younger side are Fantastic Mr. Fox and George’s Marvelous Medicine. As your DS gets older, he can try Matilda, The BFG, Witches, Danny Champion of the World, etc.) Another one that has been a huge hit in our home is the My Neighbor Totoro book by Hayao Miyazaki. You probably know the movie, and this book is like the movie, but in picture and words in a book. Lots of words - so not too young for your DS. Both of my kids love it, and I frequently give it as birthday presents to our kids’ friends. www.amazon.com/Neighbor-Totoro-Picture-Book-New/dp/1421561220If I can think of more, I will let you know!

Test a crap ton of people and figure out where this virus is, so we know how big the problem is and can appropriately plan next steps. France is also not testing, which is making people very upset there. I hope your governor comes around. Sheesh.

Day 1 of home schooling my K kiddo. Technically the school is taking an instructional break this week and next week is spring break and then after the break they are rolling out online learning in whatever that looks like. I wanted to start today though to keep a sense of normalcy. The baby takes a decent morning nap so for now that is school time (which works since she is used to morning half day kinder). Today we started with the Atlantic white shark conservancy story time, did calendar/weather, made and coloured a daily schedule, worked on a kindergarten curriculum workbook we have, practiced reading, make a corona virus journal to practice writing each day, and did the free scholastic online learning activities. We also took a long walk and ran around an empty field, dusted the house, watched the Cincinnati zoo safari of the day and downloaded ABC mouse with a free code and started working through that. Overall a reasonably successful day. They did lots of free play while I took care of the baby etc. DH works in an essential service and they have minimized as much direct person contact as possible but he will not be off work unless the entire country gets shut down and even then he would be like last to get shut down I think. Which is good for money reasons and I’m not overly worried about him contracting anything with the way his work is set up

Taitai thanks so much for the recos! I will go look for the titles and hopefully there are ebooks available since library is closed for an undetermined time, however I love My neighbor Totoro and I am certain DS would love it too so I am putting an Amazon order in for that one for sure along with the few TinTin books available. DS does love Charlotte's web and I totally forgot about Stuart Liltle. I grew up reading about wizards and fairies and pixies and loved them at his age which explains my obsession for the fantasy genre and Zane Grey books lol! I gave DS an English comic book ( The Beano ) and he's obsessed with it. He also found my Asterix and Obelix and is obsessed with them. Haha! These are all foreign sounding just like all the books available here to me. I will try the Ramona and Beezus but not sure if it will hold his interest. I might just break down and order the whole series of The Enchanted Wood. He loved reading the first book and got excited when I told him there were 2 note in the series. I was just hoping my parents could bring my tattered copies back here but from the way things are progressing, I think it will be another year for them and me to feel comfortable with traveling the long distance - even then who knows.
