L got his first report card yesterday and this ish doesn't make sense! I have my first parent/teacher conference and we're going to need a lot of clarity on this. It's 8 pages long and I'm not sure if this is what he needs before kindergarten or if it is broken down by age. I'm not sure how to read this and say, yup he still needs an IEP or not!?! Tomorrow afternoon should be interesting. I didn't even know Pre-schoolers got a report card.
Valentine's day is this month and Liam picked out Haribo gummy bear Valentine's. We now have to cut out the labels and put them on the packages so that he can match names/shapes with each person bag. I know L will love it because he'll feel like a mailman.

The report card is from preschool? M's report card from elementary school is only 2 pages. 8 pages for preschool sounds extreme.

tgrimes, right! 8 pages and I can't tell you what it means. I asked my neighbor and they were told how it works at the first conference which we weren't in the school yet but neighbor's son is ahead with the exception of social/emotional so I don't think she asked the questions I'm about to ask the teacher tomorrow. 60 boxes have a letter "grade" and comments. They are using a weird system of E= Exceeding Expectations; M= Meeting Expectations; P= Progressing Toward Expectations; N= Not Yet Demonstrating Expected Skill. I don't see where they are saying what the expected skill is. 1a is Manages Feelings. L got an M and in Comments it says Currently, L: is beginning to comfort self by seeking out special object or person. Next, L will: Comfort self by seeking out special object or person. What is the expectation? Is it an expectation for a 3 year old or for a child who is 8 months from starting Kindergarten? I also don't know how this translates for his future IEP. Of the 60 boxes, how many M's means he's not behind? How many N's and you want to hold him back or he needs more added to his IEP. Then trying to explain it to DH who is overseas is even more confusing. I will add it's a new system because parents felt they weren't given enough information so this is the program the teacher uses to track progress printed out.

Cheshie6 I wouldn't think your IEP has anything to do with this.

My assumption was that if he gets a whole bunch of M’s they’ll find he doesn’t need an IEP anymore. It all depends on what his IEP is for and how your school district handles them. From what you described, the teacher implemented this new system for report cards to give the parents more information and it's not something his therapists are involved in. For H's IEP, his teachers aren't even consulted regarding progress. It's only handled by the therapists and his case worker. Once we were approved for services, we stay in for 3 years and they continue working towards different goals if he continues to reach the ones they have set. I'm sure it varies by school district/state, but I'd imagine they'd put more emphasis on what the therapists are seeing rather than his preschool teacher. I'm assuming she's not trained to make those decisions, if that makes sense.

Cheshie6 I agree it does get confusing because the two (his IEP and his progress at school) cross lines at some point now that these kiddos are in prek. Our meetings for B’s IEP do involve his prek teacher now but it’s more about his progress in school that his therapists don’t see because they are only with him in the classroom for a short period of time. They use that feedback in his IEP though. Remind me, does L get therapy in his classroom or is it separate from school? 8 pages seems a little OTT for a prek student. IMO the parent teacher conferences are much more informative. I would write down a list of questions and bring it with you. ETA: in our particular case, B has goals that he has to meet and that will determine if he will continue to receive services.

Cheshie6 what you are describing sounds like it his based on age and development. She likely is using some sort of screener like the doctors do. That said an IEP is completely separate from that. His goals would need to be met and he would have to be assessed using much more formal guidelines. IEPs follow federal guidelines and have to do with how many standard deviations students are behind in certain areas. It's a lot more clinical. Report cards like you are describing are subjective and based on observation. Are you worried he will get bumped off his IEP when he still needs it? There is a whole process to getting rid of an IEP that takes time and involves you more formally. It also can only happen during an actual IEP meeting. A conference is just a conference. 8 pages is insane but sounds like maybe parents like it. *We get no report card. Just progress notes which are directly related to IEP.

sarahwithanh, I was thinking that they’d take his report cards into consideration at our next IEP meeting because his pre-K teacher was at those meetings. Like if he’s meeting expectations everywhere in the classroom, they may feel speech is not hindering his academics and they’d fight to get it removed. (This school district is known to want to keep IEPs to a minimum) Thank you for explaining that! waitwhat, he only gets speech thru the school. Unfortunately, we can’t afford more than that right now. I get monthly reports from his SLP. I’m sorry, I was trying to start a happy February thread and so far it’s about my confusion in how the IEP and report cards work. What’s everyone planning for Valentine’s Day? Anyone else have classroom things they need to do for their child?

Cheshie6 M has to make a box to take to school for her valentines. When I was growing up we just wrapped a shoebox in white tissuse paper and covered it in stickers. One of my friends showed me what pinterest moms are doing these days. So I guess now I need to get pinterest. Dammit! (Same goes for M's arctic project. Those 3D animals had pinterest all over them.) Anyway, I bought this at Target and we'll be doing it this weekend.

They will be making a bag at school and we have to cut out the labels because it's not just a kid's name but a symbol (Liam's is rectangle) and they have to match the label to the bag. I'm going to do this: The parent/teacher meeting isn't till 3:50pm so I probably won't be able to share until after I get done with swim classes as I'll be running straight to work from the meeting. It was the only hour slot I could have done without taking off from work. But I will let you know!

Parent/teacher conference went well! We got a lot more clarity and they are using the checklist they’d use for an IEP for all the parents. DH was even on the phone to hear stuff so that helps. I don’t have to try to translate for him and he asked his questions.
It’s for the state as well to make sure these programs are working. It will be used on his IEP so it’s great to get used to it. They think he is doing well. He’s a young 3 and they aren’t quizzing him on things like counting. He’s still distracted by so much. The example they used was that he wants to paint but to get him into a smock and the paper ready and he had already moved on. These are for his age and will stay the same for this year and a half. (Even though he’ll be four) He’ll get the 4 year old when he’s about to turn 5 as he is born after the start date.
I’m glad I had it today because they cancelled schools for tomorrow and tomorrow’s conferences need to be rescheduled.

DH is gone back offshore so it's just me and the boys for the next 3 weeks. We're expecting another fuck tonn of snow tonight followed by freezing rain tomorrow, so that should be super fun to deal with on my own. The boys are being pretty chill for me at least, so that's something. We're possibly dropping the price on our house, again . It kills me but we need it sold ASAP. Gotta get in the new house and settled away before baby

Maybe they'll help you do snow clean up if it's not too bad.

Y'all want to know what gets the glue of your skin from mouse traps? Olive oil.
Want to know how I know this? Because H stepped on one this morning and then tried to remove it with his hands. Apparently when we had the mouse in our house MH put a glue trap inside the recliner and forgot about it.
The things I have to google at 6:30am.

I guess it finally dislodged.

M came home with another project that's due next Wednesday. She picked Harriet Tubman so we'll go to the library this weekend and check out some books. At least this time I don't have to do any arts & crafts.

Also, did I tell y'all that M's kindergarten teacher is adopting a baby? They've been trying for years and finally got matched up with a child last week. He'll be joining their family on the 22nd so she'll be taking 3 weeks off and then the next week is spring break. Selfishly, I'm glad it's only 3 weeks. If she wasn't M's teacher I'd be telling her to take all the time she needs. All the kids in her class just adore her.
I bought her a bunch of clothes and a few toys. I'm pissed I just did a toy purge though. She could have had all of it!

That's so awesome tgrimes. We went through the adoption process (spent a number of years on the waitlist, did all the classes, family stuff, etc) and my gosh it's not easy. I get so happy for success stories. **We removed ourselves from the list after H was born. I had actually gotten the call that we were in the final stages, ready to be matched, when I was in the emerg with my hip, like 30 minutes after they told me I was pregnant and loaded me up on morphine for the pain (what a spin that day was!)
