My DS (27 months) decided a few nights ago that he is interested in using the potty. When we keep him without pants or a diaper on, he is 100% successful peeing on the potty but if we are at another house or he is wearing a diaper, he will never tell me he needs to pee. We went to a family BBQ and I attempted to put him on the potty every half hour but he started crying and yelling no whenever we got close to their bathroom so I didn't push it.
I'm just not really sure where to go from here. Put him in diapers or pull ups when we go out and hope he will eventually tell me when he feels the need? And keep him bottomless at home? He gets 2 smarties and tons of praise for every pee.

ilovenaps, I would start slow. If he's good with using the potty at home, just start there. Go to wearing pull-ups instead of diapers when you go out and ask him if he needs to go potty but don't push him. He will eventually open up to the idea of using "foreign" bathrooms. My DD was slow to potty train and we found we could not pressure her at all or she would shut down and just refuse. We started the potty training process around your DS's age but she wasn't fully ready until she was 33 months when it just finally clicked and she decided was ready to use the potty consistently during the day. We then went to putting her in panties whenever she was awake and if we went out, we just had to remind her to go quite often. Pull-ups were terrible for DD when she was potty training. She never minded being wet or dirty so as long as she was wearing one, she would use it. When out in public, we had to constantly ask if she needed to go and even then she was hit or miss with actually telling us she needed to go. She is 3 1/2 and not ready to be night trained yet so she wears a pull-up to sleep. We have to take it off of her as soon as she wakes up or she will use it until it comes off.

sleepymonkey DS is the same. Doesn't mind being wet at all. He did actually use a restaurant potty last night and he asked to go so I think we are making slow but sure progress!

Bonus: if you're out, have LO come see you use the bathroom first. Then it can be their turn.
