We have friends who would like to have us out to their cabin with them this December for a trip, but the cabin is about 10 hours away. Is that just was too far to travel by car with a 3 month old?

That’s totally up to you and how your kid does in a car seat. We drove to a friends wedding 18 hours away when DD was 4 months. Stopped every few hours and she was mostly fine. DS was another story! I’d rather make any trip with a baby vs. a toddler.

I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t some kind of medical reason they can’t be in a car seat for that long (position and all that). Thanks for the input, I’m so clueless about all this and google is often no help at all

We stopped for breaks (and stayed overnight on the way) so I didn’t really think about it. It’s possible I’m a terrible parent.

I think it’s more likely I’m an overly cautious and anxious person with a too-active imagination for negative situations 😂

We took a 6 hour car trip when this one was 2 weeks old, along with our 2 and 4 year old. It was doable, but took about 8.5 hours with all the stops to feed/change baby and let the older kids stretch their legs. I agree that it’s easier to do a long trip with a baby than a toddler or younger child because honestly their routine isn’t that different since they pretty much just chill no matter where you are.

I’m thinking we may drive to visit them in their home, which is about 5 hours away. I think it would be a better maiden voyage for us and the little guy to try. Thanks for the input!

At that age I would follow the guideline of getting baby out of the car seat every two hours. It would make it a super long trip, one I personally would break up over two days.
We're doing 5 hours this week for Thanksgiving and expect it to take at least 7 with multiple stops.

Anyone here from California? I’m curious about the paid family leave, is it through his 12th week, or does it end the day he turns 12 weeks?

peggyhill I'm in CA, but I'm a teacher, so my leave is different because we don't pay into state programs. But I know my disability ended the day he turned 6 weeks...which is technically the end of his 6th week. (They turn 1 week at the end of their first week of life, etc.) So the day he turns 12 weeks is the end of his 12th week.

Figuring out leave stuff can be so frustrating. I’m in Canada and we have the choice of taking 12 months of leave with Employment insurance paying 55% of income (up to a max) or 18 months with EI paying 33% up to a max. This can be taken by one parent or shared. The 18 month is new and was not an option when DS was born in October 2017 but DH did take 5 weeks of our leave. This time we are doing the 18 month and I am going back to work sept 1 and then DH will be off (and there is a new thing where as long as the leave is split we get an additional 8 weeks so DH is going to be off work for 38 weeks). Apparently no dads at his work ever take leave? Because he has now talked to 4 different people to get answers to his questions 🙄. He works for a federal company and continues to accrue vacation and personal days while on leave which is what we were trying to figure out and he kept getting conflicting answers, it was super annoying

doodlemommy , Super jealous of your 12 month leave! The fact that I got 3 months makes me lucky, not every state in the US does Paid Family Leave. Did your H have an HR departmet to talk to?

Not really, that’s what’s annoying. I mean they have HR people he could call but they aren’t local I don’t think. He finally got some union guy to find him the correct information but it wasn’t easy. It still blows my mind how different leave is in Canada vs the US. I’m glad you live where you got some paid leave at least!
