I’m inspired to add to the birth stories.
8/6
Plan was to induce on 8/6 at 38+6 so that my own doctor could deliver the baby, as she was set to go out on vacation starting 8/7. We got up at 5:15 to get ready to head to hospital at 6am on 8/6. At about 5:25 I got a call from the labor & delivery unit that they were too busy and to await another call by 10am to let us know what to do. We waited, got another call around 10am pushing us to 8/7. I was bummed because I would miss out on my doctor. I was assured by Ob’s office that the doctor that would deliver the baby was very nice and would handle the induction. We spent the rest of 8/6 walking around the mall (because 100+ degree temps) and having an awkward lunch with my dad and stepmom plus my mom who were all in town from out of state for the birth. We also had to scramble for childcare for an extra night for DS.
8/7
Woke up at 5:00am again to head to hospital at 6. We were finally a go this day. Arrived at hospital and got checked in and were in room by 6:50am. Pitocin started shortly after. I was at 3cm to start the day.I really liked my l&d nurse that came on shift at 7am. She was great.
Doctor arrived at 7:30am to introduce herself and to break my water. This doctor had delivered a coworkers baby and coworker had a good experience with her. So I was feeling ok about the change in doc. And she okayed me to have crackers and water during the induction which I was so happy about.
Labored until about 9:30 and was starting to really feel contractions. At that point I asked for epidural. Anesthesiologist came quickly and epidural was placed smoothly. They let MH stay in the room for this and hold my feet on the edge of the bed which was really nice. Last time they kicked XH out of the room.
Epidural worked very well. I wasn’t totally numb so able to move feet but couldn’t feel the pain anymore. I labored through lunch and ate some crackers. I was progressing to 4, 5, then 6cm through lunchtime.
I started feeling nauseous around 1:00ish. Also had some pain from left side. I finally asked for nausea meds around 1:45. Nurse decided to check me around 2:00 and I was complete. I know I went from 6 to 10cm in about an hour. Doctor was in surgery so I had to labor down for about an hour. It wasn’t bad but I was ready to meet DD.
At 3:00pm doctor was finally available and we were ready to push. I did a practice push and nurse told me to stop - baby was ready to come out. I was so thrilled because I pushed for 1.5 hours with DS.
Doctor arrived, I pushed for maybe 5 pushes and DD was born at 3:20pm. She was 6lbs, 11oz and 19.5 inches long. They immediately placed her on my chest. MH can’t do blood so he declined to cut the cord. DD looks so much like MH that I immediately pointed that out. And she has a head full of strawberry blonde hair! DS and S.S. got to meet her along with my parents a few hours later.
I had 3 tears. Recovery was rough for about 10 days after but now I feel great. Overall my induction experience was much better than with DS.
