Oh hey strangers.
So. I'm on the fence here with DS2. If we ask for a speech eval, is that usually covered by insurance? He has...I don't know, a few words? Maybe a handful?
He consistently says: Hot Mama Duck Quack (for duck) Hssss (for snake)
Hm. That may be it? He'll point to things if we name them 🤷♀️
He's 21 months (today actually!) But was 6 weeks early. DS1 only had like 10 words at around 2 but had an EXPLOSION at like 26/27 months or so and now never.shuts.up. (said with love 😂). So. Yea. I don't know. His 2 year well check isn't until September a d at his 18 month his pedi wasn't really concerned.
ETA oh he does say "bye bye" too and just started saying "hi" this week. And he'll "vroom" for cars/trucks and "roar" for like, bears and dinosaurs 😂

Paging doodlemommy for her expertise. I do think that sounds count as words at this age, as long as they are consistently and correctly used - but don’t quote me on that - I could be wrong. If I’m right, I would think that roar and vroom would count. That’s also a good point about your DS being born early, so I wonder if they look at adjusted age for him with this type of stuff? Either way, might be good to just check and see. I don’t live in the USA, so I’m no help about cost/insurance of the early intervention stuff.

It's just frustrating because of the lack of communication and he REFUSES to sign. Like, he looks at me and giggles when I try to show him.

If he qualifies, they would send a speech therapist to your house to work with him.

thechickencoop, our DS2s sound similar. I don't think mine has quite as many words/sounds as yours does.....maybe. Our Parents As Teachers lady filled out a referral since we were a little concerned about his speech. We got a call from our state's program and DS2 is having a speech evaluation this afternoon. In our state, to qualify for early intervention therapy he has to be at a level half his age. So a 20 month old needs to be at the level of a 10 month old to receive free therapy through our state. I'm sure they're all different though. I do think we have an option to pay for therapy if he doesn't qualify, but we haven't crossed that bridge yet. Everyone in this process has told me that an evaluation is worth it if we're concerned, to at least get a feel for how far behind he is, as well as peace of mind.

Thanks guys! I think I may give our pedi a call today for a referral or however they do it. I check out our EI website but there was a ton of info so I figure his pedi will be the easiest avenue.

Yes, sounds count as words at this age as long as they are used consistently. Also labels that aren’t “correct”. For example, DS calls buses “wah wah” (from the babies on the bus go wah wah wah), all dogs are “Sadie” (our dog’s name), cats are meow. He used to call cars “whee” but recently started calling them car.
I would definitely do an eval, especially if it’s free or low cost. At least then you know! I have no idea how insurance in the US works though, sorry!

We had our evaluation yesterday. The SLP didn't think DS2 would qualify for early intervention but she was going to officially let us know after she scores the assessment. She said that if he doesn't have 5 more words in 3 month, we should call them back and have another assessment done.

She said that if he doesn't have 5 more words in 3 month, we should call them back and have another assessment done. Thats kind of annoying that they dont calculate that on the same day. For both of our EI appts they calculated and explained the scoring on the spot. Yay though that you dont have to worry about services right now. Im sure that ol' 24 month "word explosion" I keep hearing about is right around the corner!
